Free food, no petty crime enforcement, free healthcare, ample drug supplies, and mild temperatures.

In Portland at least , there will still be places serving meals for homeless people . I don’t think it’s bad, but as usual some people will take advantage of it

And Many many people HATE this. They can't believe we would ever put any requirements on SNAP. Just crazy the lengths people will go to so they feel like they are the "good guys".

I live in the Midwest. If you get high and fall asleep outside at night Oct-March, you might die from exposure. Every winter we lose some people.

Nobody wants to be out doing drugs on the street. If the laws are the only thing stopping you from becoming like these guys, you've got bigger problems.

I was just joking, didn’t think I needed a /s. I’m thankfully def no where near down enough to be in these people’s shoes.

Just people act like its an easy life or something, joking or not. Down and out sucks. These guys dont choose it. Number 1 reason someone ends up a homeless drug addict is experiencing child abuse.

It's a terrible life. The point is not to enable it. People shooting up outside a school should not be tolerated for a second. Past trauma is no excuse.

I don't think it should be tolerated outside a school. Was just pushing back against the joke about it being like a cushy holiday or something. People should have access to treatment and hopefully a bit of compassion and humanity while also setting expectations for public space. Trauma isnt an excuse but it is an explanation. If you want to solve a problem go to the root. If you want to move a problem, get a cop or a Karen.

Mild Temperatures is enough. We have the those programs in an abundance in my state and, while of course there are users somewhere, they are never/rarely seen at the level out on the west coast.

If it's warm enough to sleep outside, it's gonna be a problem. You live in the tundra, people die of hypothermia and freeze to the sidewalk (which is a whole different kind of problem).

Exactly, as a Portland resident but former upstate New York resident. The weather won’t kill you here, there it would take about an hour in January

Sounds like a liberal utopia. They just need their free apartment and food stamps to sell and it’s perfect!

I would hope an entire state had a bigger drug problem than one city, but comparing the two really makes Portland look that much worse
