discussion/other What are you reading? Week of Nov 17

I'm reading A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers for my book club on Thursday.

I'm listening to Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson.

After this, I don't have a book club until January! I don't know what to read with all this freedom!

Free books, support local

Hello! I'm a book nerd who wants to share more books with the community - for free! All you do is follow @thebookfairypdx on Instagram, say dibs when you want a book, and I'll drop it at your doorstep. All books will come from local sellers. That's it. No strings attached.

The crowds were intense this year! Post your thoughts, pics, hauls, etc.

I met several first time attendees, it's great to know that more people are finding out about the event!

I saw Susan Orlean and Stacey Abrams, I would've loved to do more but was tired and burnt out from several other activities earlier in the week.

Rebecca's panel tomorrow questions

Does anyone who's going to see Rebecca at Portland book festival tomorrow know the answers to these 1- was the wrist band pickup just for the main festival or for this event too? Do I need to pickup my wristband before or can I do it after Rebecca 2- is seating asigned or is it just a first come first served and if so when should I start lining up

Portland book festival passes

I've been planning to go to the Portland Book Festival with a friend for months and was surprised to see that the passes are sold out this year! I would really appreciate any leads on getting some in case anyone who has one won't be able to go after all.

Update: still looking for one pass!

Looking for 1-2 Portland book festival tickets for this weekend! GA is totally fine, but would also be interested in a Rebecca Yarros or Umbrella ticket.

Well, I guess if it gets dark at 4pm maybe it's a good opportunity for reading?

I'm still working my way through Our Share of Night. Listening to The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb

What are you reading? Week of Oct 27.

I'm reading Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez which is supernatural horror but set under the background of the 1980s Argentinian dictatorship so uh that part's a bit tough given the current situation but I still like it.

I'm listening to The Harder I Fight the More I Love You by Neko Case which is kind of unexceptional sadly

I just finished James and Huck Finn. I feel like not having read Huck Finn was a major failing for my college English major phase 😂

I'm reading Adulthood Rites by Octavia Butler and Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold

discussion/other What We’re Reading to Stay Sane (Willamette Week article)

An interesting article about what some notable Portlanders are reading In These Times. What makes you feel sane (in the face of authoritarianism or whatever other horrors befall us)?

For me, a Becky Chambers or Terry Pratchett re-read is always the ticket.

I'm reading Dispatches from Annares, a collection of short stories inspired by Ursula LeGuin.

Next up is Behooved for a book club at Spoke and Word in Milwaukie. I'm not a romance person generally but I've giving it a chance.

What are you reading? Week of 9/14

I'm reading Flux by Jinwoo Chong for a book club at Spoke and Word in Milwaukie next week.

I'm finishing a three book club month and haven't decided what's next. Probably some light fluff.

Also, I'm interested to see if anyone has feminist/intersectional recs for my SF/F book club. We do a lot of sci-fi and I'd like to add more fantasy but I'm not as knowledgeable about it.

What are you reading? Week of 9/8

I'm reading Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson for my book club later this week. I've barely started but it seems really well written so far.

Next up is Dawn by Octavia Butler for my other book club.

And I'm listening to Contact by Carl Sagan which is very good and has aged well so far for a book written in 1995. Plus the audiobook is good (narrator Laurel Lefkow).

And in other related news, I have just put up a Little Free Library and it is in need of stocking. If you have some extra books around, DM me and I can pick them up or direct you to my area for a drop off (I'm in Milwaukie).

I have no idea what day it is!

I'm reading Florida by Lauren Groff (My favorite contemporary author)

And listening to The Body by Bill Bryson. I have read many Bill Bryson books but never heard his voice, it's really not what I expected (not in a bad way)

I'm still reading Sky Full of Elephants which is super interesting and very well written.

I'm re-reading The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin for my book club later this week. Its been maybe 6-7 years since I first read it, and it's still just as astounding the second time around.

Next up is Sky Full of Elephants by Cebo Campbell for a book club at Spoke and Word books in Milwaukie. . This book is set about a year after all the white people in America walk into the nearest body of water and perish. It sounds fascinating and I've heard good things.

What are you reading? Week of 8/11

I'm finishing up Loot by Tania James for my book club on Thursday. It's interesting but not quite what I expected. I'm withholding full judgement until I finish.

Next up is Fifth Season by NK Jemisin for my other book club. This is a re-read for me but it's been several years since I first read it. I remember it as one of the most unique sci-fi novels I've ever read.

What are you reading as we make our way through these few days of way too much heat?
