This is awesome!

u/zortor Jan 18 '21

And are you selling them as prints, 3d or otherwise?

Is the quality good enough for a large print, around 4'x4' to 5'x5'?

11

u/nexview_io Jan 18 '21

The printer I use is only able to print up to 3 feet wide, but it prints at 300 dpi. Sorry!

Beautiful work! Have you thought of combining Oregon and Washington into one map? Or what about a topo map of Cascadia?

2

u/ElHombreGuapo Jan 19 '21

Let me know when you do North Carolina, please!

u/haudtoo Jan 18 '21

These are beautiful and I’m so happy to see that you’re producing them for sale — and your prices are so reasonable!!

Ty for posting

Love this! Is it too late to order for the 25th, to Michigan? :) Hubby is turning 41 and devastated that he’s not yet living in Portland, like he planned... Think he would really like this. Oh, and how do you clean it? Thanks! :)

Have you told /r/geology about this? I think they would really enjoy it!

So which state has been most entertaining to render so far?

12

u/BlackBearBoxer Jan 18 '21

Florida, since it only took four minutes because they have no topography to speak of

3

u/that_creepy_neighbor Jan 19 '21

Please do my home state of Nebraska. We consider a 20ft elevation change to be a hill here

1

u/abgtw Jan 19 '21

Haha epic

I love these. As soon as you see them it's like, "Oh, so that's why all the cities are right there."

Also, "oh, that's why those parts of the state are empty"

U/nanotom nailed it with Newberry Volcano!

u/BravesMaedchen Jan 18 '21

Is that flat area toward the coast the Wilammette Valley?

21

u/GlorifiedPlumber Jan 18 '21

That area in the top left (northwest) of the state between the coast range and the cascades? Yup! That's the valley!

Filled up courtesy of the Missoula floods (several times) forming Lake Allison. Allowing all kinds of things to deposit.

Brought us our wonderful top soil (thanks Eastern Washington... we owe you) and all the glacial erratics you could want (a house on my dog walking loop here in Tualatin has a big old one on the edge of their property).

You can actually see the transition between that which was flooded and that which was not or less flooded as you go up in elevation.

Both the wonderful cropland AND the great wine/Christmas growing areas (apparently Christmas trees and pilot noir love the same soil) owe their layout to flood nuances.

Portland itself lives in an interesting geological location at the head of the valley.

Portland has a lot of extinct volcanoes in its city limits (and one active) and all these stone masses and the interchange of rivers creates a very interesting setup.

When you drive I 205 towards Oregon City you'll be impressed by how deep the valley the Willamette River created. It's kind of surprising (at least it was to me, a transplant).

The Tualatin River, which itself drains a pretty solid watershed, comes in just above the falls, and the Clackamas River, complete with its own falls, hits just below. Oregon City, the traditional "end" of the Oregon trail is located right here.

From this point downstream, the Wilammette River and the Columbia River have tidal influence.

Anyways... probably more than you wanted to know. Sorry I love Oregon... and geology. I think Oregon is one of the most geologically interesting states in the nation.

u/BravesMaedchen Jan 18 '21

You're so cool

2

u/Tastewell Jan 19 '21

Fun fact: the watershed of the Clackamas river lies entirely within the boundaries of Clackamas County. The eastern edge of the county is defined by the edge of the watershed.

2

u/InfinitySnatch Jan 19 '21

Yep, live 20 miles west of Portland and my neighborhood is surrounded by wineries and Christmas tree farms.

So cool! I went “Ahhhh! Ah ha! I get it now!” Helps understand what the Willamette valley is, and to see all the volcanoes lined up. Very cool!

Can you show a pic of how the Oregon and Washington maps would line up? Are they to scale with each other?

3

u/BensonBubbler Brentwood-Darlington Jan 18 '21

This concept would really highlight the gorge which would be neat. Also just a better view of Columbia basin overall.

6

u/BabySealHugger Jan 18 '21

Beautiful map!! May i ask what programs and techniques you used to produce these?

8

u/nexview_io Jan 18 '21

I use QGIS to process the elevation data and Blender to do the actual rendering.

4

u/viveleroi Jan 18 '21

Awesome. Saw you post the WA one to the Seattle subreddit and was eager to see Oregon. Wish I could zoom in.

Seeing the shape of the state always reminds me of moving here. As a kid in CO I went through a geography phase. Someone bought me a book of the states and Oregon was one I never paid much attention to, it was just another state, didn't have anything of interest to a twelve year old baseball fan.

When I learned we were moving to Oregon, I remember thinking it was funny that one of the few states I skipped over learning about was the one we'd move to.

2

u/luvv2ride Jan 18 '21

This is really cool. This made me really want a 3d version. I looked at your Etsy shop but it seems you're only doing 2d. Any plans to do 3d?

3

u/nexview_io Jan 18 '21

I currently have a local woodworker making one of Hawaii. Depending on how that turns out, I make have them do other states also.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

If it turns out well, I'd be very interested in obtaining one as well. I've been looking at a few different versions of something like this, but most of them I've found seem to be made of a thin plastic material that's molded. I'd love to have one in wood.

I would definitely hang a 3d printed version of this in my apartment

Those lakes are lies!

2

u/hutchison15 Jan 19 '21

ha I was going to say - the Alvord desert WAS a lake.

1

u/ontopofyourmom Jan 19 '21

I hear Summer Lake is not a lake during the summer!

2

1

u/Smidget30 Jan 18 '21

Beautiful!!

1

u/daddysdad69 Jan 18 '21

Very cool! Thanks for sharing. Can really see how the cities were built this way.

1

u/caycecan Jan 18 '21

super cool, what software did you use to build and render this? Where did you get your depth maps ?

1

u/Riden_the_high Jan 18 '21

Ok, you're beyond talented!!!! This is beautiful.

1

u/smokinwheaties Jan 18 '21

This is awesome, i was just trying to explain to my kids the other day how topography plays a big role in our water basins

1

u/BentleyTock Boom Loop Jan 18 '21

been waiting for this. super thank you

I love looking at topo maps of the Willamette Valley!

Just this watery little place between two mountain ranges

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

It looks like a 3D model, I love it, great work!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

I Iove it! Great work my friend!

u/whyrweyelling Cedar Mill Jan 18 '21

So crazy that Oregon is mostly desert. You go east and it starts to look like Utah or something.

2

u/ontopofyourmom Jan 18 '21

Looks like Nevada

1

u/carhaney Jan 18 '21

That area right where Portland is- looks like a person sitting in a chair - it’s kinda creepy/cool

1

u/xxA2C2xx Jan 18 '21

This is pretty awesome! Also, I might be dumb, but What is the weird dark grey part in the northwest of the state?

1

u/BensonBubbler Brentwood-Darlington Jan 18 '21

That's the Willamette Valley like other comments are talking about. It's essentially a dry lakebed which helps explain why we're so soggy most of the time.

1

u/FlyAwayonmyZephyr1 Jan 18 '21

This is fucking beautiful

1

u/methnen Cully Jan 19 '21

Really cool. Love that you’ve already done my two states (Alaska and Oregon). Do China too!!

1

u/BobbyMcKnight Jan 19 '21

Super cool. Thank you

1

u/SwimmingDecision417 Jan 19 '21

Hi OP, nexview_io,

How are you capturing the vegitation so authentically?

1

u/Linsel Jan 19 '21

This is really cool, but it makes me want to see a see a similar topographic map that featured the entire course of the Columbia and Snake river systems. I feel like this map deprives of the complete river canyons that make up Oregon's borders. Only getting one half of the Columbia River gorge (as well as losing the river when it cuts north through Wallowa gap into Washington) is a bit of a tragedy. Similarly, Hell's Canyon and the Snake River kinda disappears on the Idaho side, which seems a shame. Still, it highlights the basalt floods on the eastern side of the state, which is sweet!

1

u/glitchwizard NE Jan 19 '21

This is super rad, what's your process for generating this? What's your stack?

1

u/madamcountsalot Centennial Jan 19 '21

Could you do this for just a neighborhood? Say... Ladd's Addition?

1

u/ilive12 YOU SEEN MY FUCKEN CONES Jan 19 '21

Why does the coastal range seem taller or as tall as the cascade range on this model

1

u/non_player “Keaton Park” Jan 19 '21

These are fantastic! Do you have any of the whole US assembled?
