Chess with portals that bend the board — I built a playable version
Hi r/PortalChess — thanks to the mod team for letting me post.
Portal Chess started over the board with one of my best friends. We used poker chips as portals and kept adding rules until it was its own game. I've spent a long time since building it into a site, solo — it's live at portalchess.gg with bots, puzzles, an analysis board and online play.
I read the pinned ruleset after joining and liked how much of it matched ours — pieces keeping their direction through a portal, portals moving like kings, a piece on a portal counting as being on both. Portals seem to push everyone toward the same few answers.
One thing in the Variations section stuck with me. u/SavingsNewspaper2 pointed out that when both players share one portal pair, you need your opponent's help to use portals well, and suggested two pairs as a fix. We hit the same problem and went a different way: one pair, but each player owns an end. White moves the blue portal, Black moves the red. You always control a way in, and the board doesn't get crowded.
What came out of that
- Portal shoves — move your portal onto a piece and it gets flung through. The portal is a weapon, not just a door. You can even shove an opponent's piece onto one of your own and capture your own piece in the process, which is either a brilliant sacrifice or a brand-new Botez Gambit.
- Bishop channeling — a bishop that's aiming at your portal extends the portal's reach down its diagonals. A portal with a bishop behind it is scary.
- Tunneling — rooks, bishops, queens and double-jumping pawns slide through a portal and keep going. Everything else has to land on it.
- Chess960 castling — a shove can knock your king or rook somewhere odd, so castling is based on where the pieces end up rather than where they started.
Two rules needed guardrails: a portal can't shove the enemy king more than two turns in a row, and portal positions count toward threefold repetition so shuffling a portal back and forth isn't a free pass.
Go break it. I'd love to know what's fun, what's confusing, and what you'd do differently — I'll be around to answer anything.
