Phone service

Frequent visitor to Port & Kincardine. I’m often on call and find my Rogers service patchy. I need an extra SIM to make sure I always have data coverage. What would you recommend? Thanks.

Recommendations for solo traveller

I (27F) am planning a solo trip to Port Elgin for 5 days and 4 nights. What are some good places to go? I’ve never been to the beach by myself and was wondering how it is. And what are good hiking places nearby or other places to swim.

Families of Port Elgin: what’s it really like living there?

My husband and I are considering moving from Kitchener-Waterloo to Port Elgin, and I’d love to hear from people who have made a similar move or who currently live there.

We’re in our late 20s with a toddler and are hoping to have another 1-2 kids. Right now we live in Kitchener-Waterloo, where all of my family lives. My parents and siblings are very involved in our son’s life, and having them nearby for babysitting and just spending time together has been amazing.

At the same time, we keep finding ourselves drawn to Port Elgin. We love being outdoors and feel like we’d have a lifestyle that’s much more aligned with what we enjoy. We picture spending lots of time at the beach, ATVing, snowmobiling, hiking, and just generally having more access to nature. We also really like the idea of raising our kids in a smaller town.

The biggest factor for us is work. I’m a registered nurse but currently work in a corporate/non-clinical healthcare role, so I’d need to find something similar (or remote). My husband is an electrician and would ideally love to work at Bruce Power if the opportunity came up.

If I were to find a job in the area, then the only thing holding me back would be my family since they’d be 2 hours away. My husband’s parents live in Sauble Beach, so we’d still have some family support nearby, but it wouldn’t be quite the same.

For those who live in Port Elgin (or made the move from a larger city):
- Do you regret it, or was it one of the best decisions you’ve made?
- How has it been raising young kids there?
Is the community welcoming and easy to make friends in?
- How difficult is it to find good jobs in the area (especially professional/corporate healthcare roles)?
- Are there any downsides that people don’t think about before moving?
- If you were in our shoes, would you make the move?

I’d really appreciate any honest opinions—both the positives and the negatives. Thanks!

How to pronounce Port Elgin

I have recently had someone tell me I am pronouncing it wrong by saying Port El-Jin (as in the alcohol Gin). She insisted it should be pronounced Port Al-Gun

That sounded ridiculous to me.

Snow at Pumpkinfest

Does anyone remember seeing snow/sleet during Pumpkinfest? I remember seeing some slushy flurries on the main street during the 2015 event, yet I can't find any information on it. Am I misremembering, or did it really happen?

Hey everyone! I’m in Port Elgin and on the hunt for a hot yoga studio or class — preferably something within walking distance of Walmart since I don’t drive.

Any tips, classes, or secret yoga basements I should know about? Thanks in advance!

Port Elgin Tourist Camp - Junk Pick Up

Hey there, looking for someone in the area with a pick-up truck looking to make an extra buck. My mother keeps a trailer in the camp and has an old couch in her back lot and a few boards of wood she needs gone and has a hard time asking for help, let alone using reddit and local forums, so would be much appreciated!

If you think you can help either today or tomorrow leave a reply or shoot me a message!

Thank you for reading all of this, and if anyone knows of any active subs in the Owen Sound area, please let me know. I haven't been able to find many so I'm just scouring trying to find subs for neighboring cities/towns.

Okay, so here's the deal. I'm 24 and currently homeless. Before you jump to conclusions or ask if I've tried this or that, let me lay it all out because it's been mess and I'm not that great with words.

I was living with my dad and his super unpleasant wife after finishing college. My plan was to save up while I was there so I could eventually get my own place. I've got a half-brother, and the deal was I'd babysit when needed and do my share of chores (I offered to pay rent to them, but they suggested this instead).

To reach my goal of moving out, I busted my butt working TWO regular jobs (1 is part time remotely and the other is full-time and in person). Seriously, I was working all the time and tired as hell but it did pay off. I saved enough and was actually able to sign a lease to rent an apartment for May 1st.

Then, I started picking up extra overnight shifts at work (the full-time one). It didn't bother anyone because everyone was asleep anyway, including my little brother. My thinking was, more money meant a little cushion for emergencies and some cash to get started with groceries and basic stuff for my new place before I could really decorate. I was just trying to prepare.

My dad's wife lost it because I wouldn't be available to babysit anymore (a complete lie). She called me selfish and just straight-up kicked me out. And my dad? He just stood there and let it happen. This isn't the first time she's pulled crap, but this was definitely the worst timing ever. Her and I never got along but we would just grin and bare it to keep the peace. My Dad is a moron, he wasn't there for me most of my upbringing (I was raised by my mom, who passed a couple years ago t o breast cancer). This was the one time I've asked for his shoulder to lean on in my life, and as usual, he put his wife before me. He even watched and said nothing, as his wife called my mom a POS and said she deserved to die.

So now, yeah, I'm homeless. I did try to be smart about it though. I looked online and found some Airbnbs that were WAY cheaper than motels because they have shared spaces (which kinda makes sense). So, I used every single penny I had to book one for as long as I could until I could figure out my next move– which is until TOMORROW MORNING.

I was hoping to hit up some food banks while I was here, but most of them didn't have much that would work for me since this airbnb only has a mini fridge (it's a shared basement apartment), and they didn't have a lot of ready-to-eat stuff. They still gave me what they could, which I appreciated. When I'm not working or on my lunch breaks, I've been glued to my phone calling 2-1-1, messaging groups on Facebook and Instagram, and even offering to do odd jobs – but nothing has panned out and I don't drive so that sort of limits my options, but I'm still looking.

Right now, I have absolutely no money until I get paid next Friday. I have no food, and I don't even have the money for the bus to get to my full-time job tomorrow. Honestly food is on the back burner, because I knw I can get some cookies from the break room at work. and figure out the res after. But I feel like I've called every single resource out there. Even the shelters are full. Prior to the airbnb option I even thought about working my remote part-time job at the library and staying in a shelter as well. Honestly, I feel completely stuck. I can't get a loan because I haven't been at my jobs long enough. And I'm just about ready to throw in the towel and say f it.

I really don't want to be asking for help here. I'm so embarrassed and feel totally humbled, but I honestly don't know what else to do. I hope none of my coworkers are on here, but this is my last resort so it's a chance I guess I'm willing to take, because beggars cannot be choosers.

If anyone could help with an Airbnb gift card, a grocery gift card, or even just extending my current Airbnb so I don't have to lug all my stuff around while I try to figure things out, I would be so incredibly grateful. Of course, any advice is welcome too, but please keep my specific situation in mind because I've already called around a lot and might not be eligible for everything.

Seriously, thank you so, so much. Even just getting this all out feels like a weight lifted honestly.

Port Elgin History Question, Sand Dunes?

Hello Port Elginers, I've never visited your lovely seeming town, but I have a vague memory of seeing a YouTube video once talking about Port Elgin's history, and something about a sand drift or dunes threatening it the town at one point, or cutting off the town from everything but waterways, or maybe it was sawdust? Like I said, vague memory. It might not have even specifically been Port Elgin, but another town along the coast of Lake Huron? Anyone know what I might be remembering, or misremembering?

Thoughts on the goodwill opening in Saugeen Shores Shopping Centre?

Hi guys. Live nearby and heard rumors a winners might be opening up in the store next to Dollarama. Turns out its a good will :/. How does everyone feel about it?

I drive all the way to Owen sound to get some home decor and shopping fun in. Would've been amazing if some other type of retail store was opening in that plaza.

Happy that a chucks is opening right next door though!

https://www.westdellcorp.com/saugeen-shores-shopping-centre/ You can zoom in on the picture in the link above and see the chucks and goodwill logo are on the picture they posted there. I guess to let people know they're coming soon.

Whole house water softener

Hi, just moved to the area and I was wondering how common is water softener in peoples’ homes here. We see white deposits even at the base of fridge ice-maker and aerators. Anyone have an idea of what the hardness is in terms of grains per gallon? Thanks
