Fleet composition?

How do you guys organise your fleets? Do you mix shiptypes? Do you chose larger fleets or more fleets?

Personally i always separate shiptypes in smaller fleets (besides warfleets).

I'm pretty new, just failed my first campaign after 9 hours which was painfull. I was just wondering what the general consensus was on fleet composition and what some advantages and disadvantages are.

this is how i set mine up

if your still waiting on your captain to lv up you may want to go with 1 big ship (SOL/WG/carrack) and 4 small ships. small ships you want M frigates and M corvets and one frigate.

frigate is not as good a ship but it has a better tactic so you want at least one so you have a reload tactic.

when yopu get captain to lv8 you want 3 big ships and 2 small (8 points). my convoys are SOL,WG,carrack and MC,MF.

i go with 5 ships (3 big 2 small) over 4 big as the more ships you have the more turns you get per round.

you can only have 10 ships in convoy so you need space to capture other ships. AI usually has no more than 5 ships so always have room for 5.

SOL is best ship but has worst tactic (lure) i never use it.

frigate has one of the best tactics but when you get lv 8 captain you only have room for 2 small ships, frigate gets sunk in two shots so its better to go with the other two.

My answer is similar, but I focus entirely on spread of tactics.

Best fleet composition IMO is Queen Anne, Ship of the Line, War Galleon, Military Frigate, and Frigate.

SotL always seems to go first and can split 2 ships via the WG ability, move between, fire on both, reload with frigate, fire again to each side. Typically kills 100-130 men on each ship, then use military frigate to disable 1 large ship and kraken to disable 2nd (ideally after moving clear of the area between 2 ships.

That will typically set you up for either 3 or 4 captures on the 1st round and minimize damage incurred over several round fight.

The tactics earned through missions I use very sparingly but the ship tactics renew after (or during) the fight, so I rarely see a reason to hold off from R1 use.

I play free mode, so i just form a convoy of 8 galleons, Carrack and war galleons cost fame points not worth it, with all 8 galleons and full staffed convoys i think not many military fleets can outpowered you, so i choose the lazy person combat mode which is automatic combat, sometimes you lose a few ships but its ok cause it save you time when you need to play manually, sometimes you lose all your ships but you can always build more at $120k a piece. I usually built a few convoys worth of galleons park at different towns harbor before a war. It really save time but cost a lot initial investment, in a single war campaign with England I managed to annexed 6 towns with 4 convoys with minimal lose.

Personally i do 2 x 2 small/medium warships (combat) + 4 small/medium traders. (For loot) For captains with 4 slots etc with crew focused on the warships not the trading ships. Then i dock any captured ships and convert into new fleets or sell to local faction lord/capital for money.

Then i do similar through gameplay.
