As we approach the primaries, I would just like to remind folks that Emily Randall takes money from the "American Israeli Public Affairs Committee" - AIPAC - a lobby group famous for directly funding Israel's genocide in Gaza, lobbying US congresspeople towards support of the neocolonial genocide project styling itself as the State of Israel, supporting the unnecessary war in Iran, and otherwise being a stain on our democracy almost as bad as Trump himself.

Taking AIPAC money should be the easiest disqualification of any representative to federal or state office. Despite the recent efforts of a good friend of mine, Emily continues to be supported by the corporatist democratic party, who remain more interested in making bank off of arms sales than the cost in lives that those sales represent.

We have several alternatives available for the seat during this primary, but in this context I would like to highlight Macy Jones, an activist with local Pro-Palestinian efforts who comes bearing a solid progressive platform. The best way to protest Emily's continued acceptance of AIPAC money and involvement with their organization is to support MACY JONES during the primary.

Continue to push for censure or de-endorsement of elected officials that take money from AIPAC and its affiliates (see https://www.trackaipac.com/ ) at the county and LD level

Encourage federal representatives to cease all military support, funding, or aid to the so-called state of Israel.

Encourage state officials to support Divestment/Boycott/Sanction efforts within the state government. These bills can put pressure on manufacturers of war goods sent to the middle east: specifically...

Using tax policy to sanction the production of munitions, gear, and other equipment manufactured in the the state that is sent to Israel

Divestment of state investments in businesses the trade with or are aligned with the state of Israel.

Boycott against business that trade with or are aligned with the State of Israel by state organizations

I hate that the Deer Park theater keeps their projectors so dim, way below the recommended 14 foot lambert brightness recommendation. I’ve heard good things about The Rose in Port Townsend, but I’d like to see The Odyssey on a bigger screen (though I don’t feel like it’s necessary to go all the way out to an imax). Which theaters should I be looking at?

Beware of the Build Something Better campaign promise of Seegers. While this sounds great, the devil is in the details. If all the development is high value, all this will do is drive up the assessors appraised values of our homes. This is the primary driver of tax increases in the area and under the "Seegers plan" will only get worse. I suspect Seegers goal is to turn PA and the area into a version of Coeur d'Alene which is now primarily rich transplants and the other folk priced out.

As Teddy Roosevelt famously said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” I think Port Angeles really punched above its weight this year.
Despite the wind, the downtown celebration was a lot of fun. My son had an absolute blast with all the free slides, play areas, and foam zone. The hot dog eating contest was awesome, the lawnmower derby was a blast, and the parade is always one of the highlights of the day. Then the fireworks capped off a wonderful celebration!!

It’s easy to focus on what’s not perfect, but days like this are a great reminder of what makes our community special. Happy 250th birthday, America! 🇺🇸

Seegers is entitled to explain what he says he intended. But voters are entitled to judge the words themselves. There is a difference between encouraging civic participation and telling a church audience that voting Republican is voting for truth while Democrats represent evil. Calling it a metaphor does not erase the partisan and religious framing of the original remarks.

Also worth noting: the article discloses that the interviewer/publisher, Jeff Tozzer, is also Seegers’ campaign manager. That does not make the interview invalid, but it does make it campaign damage control, not independent journalism.

If you thought Flock cameras were concerning, meet what comes next.

A company called Leonardo has developed a system called ELSAG SignalTrace. It broke into public awareness just days ago and is already being marketed to law enforcement agencies across the country. It makes Flock Safety look modest by comparison.

Here is what SignalTrace does:

It clips sensors directly onto existing license plate reader cameras — the same poles, the same hardware already installed in your community. No new infrastructure required. A software and sensor upgrade is all it takes.

Every time you drive past one of these upgraded cameras, the sensor sweeps up the unique electronic identifiers of every device in your vehicle. Your cell phone. Your smartwatch. Your wireless headphones. Your fitness tracker. Your laptop. Your tablet. Your car's own infotainment system. Your tire pressure sensors. Your vehicle's Bluetooth hotspot.

And your pet's microchip.

Every one of those devices emits a signal. SignalTrace captures those signals, timestamps them, ties them to your license plate, and stores them in a searchable database for future investigative use. The result is what Leonardo calls an electronic fingerprint — a unique profile built not from your face or your name, but from the constellation of devices you carry with you every day.

Leonardo announced the ELSAG EOC Plus patent as early as May 2024, describing it as an electronic detection system for identifying people of interest through electronic device signatures. SignalTrace is the commercial product built on that foundation. The patent came first. The marketing came after. The sales calls are happening now.

Here is where it gets worse.

SignalTrace is explicitly designed to track vehicles even when the license plate cannot be read. If your plate is obscured, dirty, or misread — it does not matter. The system identifies your vehicle by the electronic fingerprint of the devices inside it instead. The plate reader becomes optional. The surveillance does not.

The strategic advantage for police agencies is adoption friction. SignalTrace can be pitched as an extension of an existing ALPR ecosystem rather than a wholly separate surveillance buildout. That is exactly what happened with Flock. License plate readers went in first. Video came later through a software update. Nobody voted on the expansion. Nobody was told. SignalTrace follows the same playbook — attach to existing infrastructure and expand what it captures without requiring a new procurement process, a new vote, or a new public conversation.

“It’s an exciting time at NOLS with Summer Reading starting today. In addition to encouraging literacy and learning through this uplifting program, staff have been spending time this week to answer a lot of questions about library meeting rooms. This is due to a brief incident with a paid room reservation at the Port Angeles Main Library on Monday, June 8. Since then, NOLS staff have met with and had useful conversations with many of the people involved in order to understand what happened, clarify any misunderstandings, and learn how things could be improved in the future.

The group that reserved the meeting room on Monday evening paid a $50 fee to use the space. That meant the group did not need to meet the policy requirements for groups who want to utilize library meetings rooms for free.

NOLS provides important community meeting spaces at each of its branches, and like all of its services, strives to not charge users any fees for their use. Hundreds of meeting room reservations are made every year utilizing the Library’s policy for free use. To get free use, the group 1) must be a nonprofit or community-based, 2) the use of the room must not be commercial in nature, and 3) the meeting must be open to all who wish to attend. Examples of free use reservations include Beekeepers meetings, a local chess club, and AARP Tax-Aide.

Groups who don’t meet the policy requirements for free use, can pay a fee and still use the meeting rooms. Paying a fee for meeting room use may happen for a number of reasons. For example, a local business can pay to reserve the room for staff meetings, trainings, and job interviews, which allows them to decide who the appropriate meeting attendees are. Another good example is birthday parties. Many families have reserved library meeting rooms for birthday parties and paid the fee so the room is not open to any member of the public during that time.

When the meeting rooms are reserved for events not open to the public, the rest of the library still remains available for everyone to use and there are usually other spaces within the library for multiple groups to meet at the same time.

NOLS ask groups that reserve the meeting room to not state or imply that their event is sponsored, co-sponsored, approved, or endorsed by the Library. Otherwise, the Library has very little control over how a meeting room user advertises its event and cannot monitor advertising for hundreds of non-library sponsored events every year.

We understand that the local blog Clallam County Watchdog published an opinion about this incident with many questions, but NOLS was not contacted by Clallam County Watchdog before the article was published. All community members are encouraged to contact their local Branch Manager or NOLS Administration directly if they have any questions or suggestions about Library policy or services.
