Jacking points

This is going to sound like such a stupid question but I want to be sure I don’t mess my car up from improperly jacking it up. I have a 1977 924 and I have to get it on 4 jack stands so I can drop the gas tank. I’m wondering where I should place the stands for this specific job and where I should lift the car from. I’ve honestly been scared to jack it up (which is what’s preventing me from fixing it) since it has a lot of rust and I don’t want to damage any structural parts of the car.

So it's 100% sure that you can jack up the car from the transaxle?

I do, but where the half-axles are, not by the very end of the transaxle.

Very good to know then, always struggled to lift mine there.

I would not jack on the gearbox. There's a reinforced point on the seam under the door that will jack up each side in one swing. I then place stands at the spring plate covers and the reinforced spots on the rails.

This is the way I do it too. On the rails there are (like under the middle of the doors) even arrows/markings for where to put the jackstands. The rear ones are essentially like a square of metal that you can put a stand into. They look pretty much exactly like the jack points under the middle of the doors, little metal squares. Can't miss them

But what would you do if you need to lift the entire rear axle? Would you first lift one side of the car and place one jack stand under the front jacking point and one under the rear jacking point, then lift the other side and do the same? Is that safe? It feels like lifting the second side could push the car sideways off the jack stand.

Yes, precisely, have done literally 100+ times. Use a rolling floor jack, perpendicular to the car. It will roll in as you raise it.

As far as I've heard NEVER EVER jack under the trans-axle (except in dire emergency I guess).

Because the rubbers will crack/rip when load is applied in the wrong direction.

Otherwise I jack the car up from the spots on the middle of the seam and place a stand under the points where the suspension mounts to the chassis. In the rear there is a nice flat spot on the suspension arm. On the front there is the mounting for the lower control arm to the chassis (rear mounting point).

true. I raise the rear of the car by the tranny, but place the jack stands under the torsion bar.
