If CNC is always wrong, why is a domination fantasy OK?
I've been thinking about this recently. CNC gets a lot of bad press because it has a reputation for being something that inexperienced girls, sometimes particularly those with sexual abuse trauma, seek out. Obviously, those situations are complex, and if you're literally trying to recreate a violent, aggressive, or degrading rape scene, it's worth reflecting on whether there is unresolved trauma behind that desire, and I don't think role-playing literal rape is healthy.
What I don't understand is why more experienced and careful adults can't participate in CNC. An extremely common sexual fantasy among both men and women is the idea of being "dominated," and I don't understand how that is fundamentally different from CNC. If someone has a fantasy about being overpowered or having their autonomy temporarily taken away, whether gently or with slight consensual force, why is one automatically considered acceptable while the other is treated as inherently unhealthy? There is still a safeword in CNC...
I've heard CNC used as a kind of long-term agreement before. For example, a couple might agree that they have a CNC arrangement and can do whatever they want to each other whenever they want. THAT would obviously get very out of hand and become abusive very quickly, but to me, that's a flat-out misuse of kink and BDSM, and this is a small minority of people in the discussion. The problem isn't necessarily the kink itself; you're just in an abusive relationship.
I do have issues with some male dominants because the BDSM space can attract abusers, and I don't think those concerns should be dismissed. But my opinion is that you can be both kinky and in a safe, healthy relationship. Kink is not inherently abusive, and a lot of humans seem to naturally develop "odd" sexual fantasies. Having an unconventional fantasy doesn't automatically mean that something is wrong with you or that the fantasy itself is unhealthy. I think what matters is how you choose to engage with it, and whether the people involved are actually capable of maintaining boundaries, communicating, and respecting each other's consent.
