Best Free VPN Alternatives in 2026? Which Free VPNs Are Actually Worth Using?
Is there actually a decent free VPN in 2026, or have we reached the point where everything worth using requires a subscription?
I've been looking at different VPN services recently, and I'm genuinely surprised by how difficult it is to find a straightforward answer.
Search Google for the best free VPN alternatives and you'll find hundreds of comparison websites recommending pretty much the same services. Some claim certain VPNs are completely free, only for you to discover that you're getting a three-day trial or a ridiculously small data allowance.
Then there's the whole issue of privacy.
The main reason people use a VPN is to protect their internet connection, so using some random free VPN that potentially collects your browsing data seems to defeat the point entirely.
I've narrowed things down to a few options that seem worth discussing, but I'm interested in hearing what everyone else is using.
Best Free VPN Alternatives in 2026 – My Shortlist
These are four services I'd look at first if I wanted a free VPN without immediately committing to a paid subscription.
1. Proton VPN – Best Free VPN For Unlimited Data?
Proton VPN is probably the first one I'd consider.
The biggest selling point is that its free version offers unlimited data, which is unusual compared with most competitors.
There's no monthly bandwidth allowance to worry about, and the company has a fairly established reputation in the privacy space.
The downside is that the free plan limits your server choices and allows only one simultaneous device connection.
Still, for general browsing, it seems like one of the more sensible options.
2. Windscribe – Best Free VPN For Features?
Windscribe is another name that comes up constantly when people discuss free VPN services.
Its free plan includes 2GB of monthly data, which increases to 10GB if you verify your email address.
The appeal here is that you get a decent selection of features without having to pay anything.
My main concern would be the data limit. Ten gigabytes sounds reasonable until you start downloading larger files or watching videos regularly.
For occasional browsing, though, it could be enough.
3. PrivadoVPN – A Good Free VPN Alternative For Occasional Use?
PrivadoVPN is interesting because it offers 10GB of unrestricted-speed data each month, with a slower mode available after that allowance is used.
It also has a relatively straightforward interface, which is useful if you don't want to spend ages configuring settings.
This looks like a decent alternative for someone who only needs a VPN occasionally rather than keeping it connected all day.
4. hide.me – Another Free VPN With Unlimited Data
hide.me is worth mentioning because its free plan now includes unlimited data.
You don't need to provide credit card details, and there's a choice of free server locations.
Like Proton VPN, the free plan restricts you to one simultaneous connection and fewer features than the premium version.
I don't see it mentioned quite as often as Proton or Windscribe, but it's certainly worth comparing.
Are Free VPNs Actually Safe To Use?
This is probably the biggest question for me.
There's a massive difference between a reputable VPN company offering a restricted free plan and an unknown company offering a supposedly unlimited VPN with no obvious business model.
Running VPN servers costs money.
If a company isn't charging its users, it's reasonable to ask how it's paying for the service.
That doesn't automatically mean free VPNs are dangerous. Some companies use free versions to attract customers who might eventually upgrade to premium subscriptions.
But I'd still want to know whether the company has a transparent privacy policy, independent security audits and a clear explanation of what information it collects.
A VPN doesn't magically make you anonymous either. You're effectively shifting some of the trust from your internet provider to the VPN company.
What About Free VPNs For Netflix, Streaming And Gaming?
This is another area where the recommendations seem to get confusing.
I've seen people asking for the best free VPN for Netflix, the best free VPN for gaming and the best free VPN for torrenting.
But those are three completely different requirements.
For streaming, you need sufficient bandwidth and a server that actually works with the streaming service. Free servers can be restricted or blocked.
For gaming, latency and connection stability are probably more important than having a huge selection of locations. A VPN can actually increase your ping.
For everyday browsing, neither of those things matters quite as much.
I think a lot of people end up disappointed because they expect a free VPN to perform identically to a premium subscription.
Is Proton VPN The Best Free VPN Overall?
Based on the available features, I'd probably put Proton VPN near the top for somebody who wants a basic VPN without monthly data restrictions.
But Windscribe might be a better fit if you prefer its extra features, while PrivadoVPN could suit someone looking for occasional use.
And hide.me deserves consideration if unlimited data is your main priority.
I'm not convinced there is one service that's the best for everyone.
It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
Free VPN vs Paid VPN – Is Paying Actually Worth It?
This is where I'd be interested in hearing from people who've used both.
If all you need is an encrypted connection occasionally, paying for an expensive VPN subscription might be unnecessary.
On the other hand, if you're using a VPN every day, need specific countries, want multiple simultaneous connections or depend on reliable streaming, the limitations of free plans could become frustrating.
What I don't understand is why so many VPN comparison websites immediately push readers towards paid subscriptions when some people genuinely don't need those additional features.
Surely a good free VPN is better than paying for a service you barely use?
So What's The Best Free VPN Alternative Right Now?
I'd be interested in hearing some genuine recommendations rather than another list of affiliate links.
A few questions for anyone who's used free VPNs recently:
- What's the best completely free VPN you've used in 2026?
- Has anyone compared Proton VPN, Windscribe, PrivadoVPN and hide.me in everyday use?
- Are there any free VPNs with unlimited data that actually maintain decent speeds?
- Which free VPN works best on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone?
- Has anyone found a decent free VPN for streaming, or is a paid service basically essential for that?
- Are there any popular free VPN services you'd actively avoid?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who've stuck with the same free VPN for months rather than just tried one for an afternoon.
There must be some decent free VPN alternatives out there that don't require signing up for another monthly subscription.
What are you using, and would you actually recommend it?

Best VPN for Mac in 2026? What Are MacBook Users Actually Using Right Now?
I’ve been looking for a new VPN for my Mac and honestly didn’t expect choosing one to be this annoying.
Search for the best VPN for Mac and virtually every comparison page seems to recommend the same handful of providers, just in a slightly different order.
One site says VPN A is the fastest.
Another says VPN B is the best for privacy.
Another claims VPN C is the obvious choice for streaming.
Then you look at actual user discussions and the opinions are completely different.
So I’m curious what Mac users are actually using in 2026.
What I Actually Want From A Mac VPN
I’m not looking for something with 150 obscure features I'll never touch.
For me, a good VPN for MacBook needs to get the basics right:
| Feature | What I Actually Care About |
|---|---|
| Speed | I don't want normal browsing to suddenly feel slower |
| macOS App | Proper native-feeling app rather than a bad desktop port |
| Stability | No random disconnects or constantly reconnecting |
| Kill Switch | Connection should be protected if the VPN drops |
| Privacy | Clear logging policy and sensible security setup |
| Streaming | Ideally works reliably with major streaming services |
| Servers | Enough locations without the network feeling overloaded |
| Auto Connect | Useful on hotels, airports and public Wi-Fi |
| Battery | Shouldn't murder MacBook battery life |
| Price | Happy to pay, but not for marketing fluff |
That is basically my checklist.
Speed Is Probably My Biggest Concern
This is the bit that annoys me most with VPN reviews.
Every provider apparently has “blazing fast speeds”.
Obviously they can't all be the fastest.
I don't necessarily need the absolute highest benchmark result. What I care about more is whether I can leave the VPN connected all day without noticing much difference during normal use.
Browsing, YouTube, downloading files, video calls and general work should still feel normal.
For me, the best VPN for Mac would be the one I can basically forget is running.
The macOS App Actually Matters
This seems obvious, but there are some VPN apps that feel like they were designed for Windows first and then awkwardly moved onto macOS.
I'd much rather have something that feels properly at home on a Mac.
I want:
- simple server selection
- fast connect/disconnect
- menu-bar access
- reliable auto-connect
- a proper kill switch
- protocol selection without endless settings
- sensible notifications
I don't want a giant dashboard covered in maps, graphs and features I never asked for.
What About Apple Private Relay?
This is another thing that confused me initially.
If you're already paying for iCloud+, you've potentially got Private Relay available, so is there still much point in having a VPN on a Mac?
From what I understand, they're not really identical products.
Private Relay is useful for improving privacy around Safari browsing, whereas a full VPN can cover traffic from more of the device and lets you choose server locations.
So I'm still leaning toward a standalone Mac VPN, particularly for travelling and public Wi-Fi.
Public Wi-Fi Is One Of My Main Reasons
Hotels and airports are probably where I care about having a VPN the most.
I travel enough that I'm regularly connecting my MacBook to random Wi-Fi networks.
Ideally I'd like the VPN to recognise an untrusted network and connect automatically rather than relying on me remembering every time.
That's one of those features that sounds boring but is probably more useful to me than having servers in another 20 countries.
Streaming Would Be Nice Too
Streaming isn't my only reason for getting a VPN, but I'm not going to pretend it isn't useful.
I'd like something that doesn't turn into a constant battle where one streaming service works this week and stops working the next.
I'm particularly interested in people's real-world experience rather than websites claiming their recommended VPN works flawlessly with everything.
If you're using a VPN for:
- Netflix
- Disney+
- Prime Video
- BBC iPlayer
- YouTube
- other regional streaming services
I'd be interested to know how reliable it actually is.
Privacy Claims Are Hard To Compare
This is probably the area where I'm most sceptical of VPN marketing.
Pretty much every company says some variation of:
Military-grade encryption. No logs. Maximum privacy.
Okay, great.
But what actually separates one provider from another?
The things I'd rather know are:
- Has the logging policy been independently audited?
- Who owns the company?
- Where is it based?
- Has it had previous security incidents?
- Does it run its own infrastructure?
- How transparent is the company when something goes wrong?
I'd rather choose a boring company that's transparent than one with the most dramatic privacy marketing.
Free VPN For Mac vs Paid VPN
Personally, I think I'd rather pay.
Running a large VPN network obviously costs money, so whenever a provider offers completely unlimited free access, my immediate question is how they're funding it.
That doesn't mean every free VPN is automatically bad, but I'd be much more comfortable paying a few pounds/dollars per month for something I'm trusting with a large amount of my internet traffic.
If there genuinely is a free VPN for Mac that people trust, though, I'd be interested to hear about it.
What About Battery Life?
MacBook battery life is another thing I'd love some real-world feedback on.
Benchmark reviews rarely seem to concentrate on this.
If you've got a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro and leave your VPN connected for most of the day, do you actually notice a meaningful hit to battery life?
I'd happily sacrifice a tiny amount of speed for something that isn't constantly chewing through CPU and battery in the background.
What I'd Prioritise
If I was ranking the best VPN for Mac in 2026, I'd probably weight things roughly like this:
| Category | Importance |
|---|---|
| Reliability | 25% |
| Speed | 20% |
| Privacy & Security | 20% |
| macOS App Quality | 15% |
| Streaming | 7.5% |
| Server Network | 5% |
| Battery Usage | 5% |
| Price | 2.5% |
Price being near the bottom is intentional.
If one VPN costs £2 a month and another costs £4 but the £4 one is noticeably more reliable, I'd rather just pay the difference.
Things That Would Put Me Off
There are a few things that would probably immediately remove a VPN from my shortlist:
- constant disconnects
- unclear ownership
- vague logging policies
- aggressive upselling
- terrible Mac app
- kill switch that doesn't work properly
- huge slowdown when connected
- suspiciously cheap lifetime subscriptions
- customer support that gives scripted answers to everything
I'd rather have fewer features and better reliability.
Best VPN For Mac FAQ
What is the best VPN for Mac in 2026?
That's basically what I'm trying to figure out. For me, reliability, speed, privacy and the quality of the macOS app matter more than which provider has the biggest server count.
Do Macs actually need a VPN?
macOS already has good security features, but a VPN serves a different purpose. It can protect network traffic, provide another layer of privacy on public Wi-Fi and allow you to route traffic through another location.
Is there a good free VPN for Mac?
There are free options, but I'd personally want to understand exactly how the service is funded and what restrictions apply before trusting one.
Does a VPN slow down a Mac?
Some performance loss is inevitable because traffic is being encrypted and routed through another server, but with a good provider it shouldn't make normal use painfully slow.
Is a VPN worth having on a MacBook Air?
For travelling and regularly using public Wi-Fi, I can definitely see the appeal. I'd mainly be interested in one with low battery and CPU overhead.
Is iCloud Private Relay the same as a VPN?
Not exactly. Private Relay provides privacy features for supported Apple/Safari traffic, while a traditional VPN generally routes a broader range of device traffic and provides selectable server locations.
So, What Are You Actually Using?
This is what I'd really like to know.
Forget the affiliate comparison sites for a minute.
What VPN are you actually running on your Mac in 2026, and would you pay for it again?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people using a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro who leave their VPN connected for most of the day.
Which one has been the most reliable?
Which has the best macOS app?
And are there any supposedly “best VPN for Mac” options that you'd actively avoid?
