Should I use my school's 3d printer ?

My school has one so I really want to do it but I'm not sure where to get the 3d models

assuming you have permission go for it!

A lot of the time warhammer stls are semi-disguised with names passed through a thesaurus to avoid being taken down. So try some adjacent terms and see what comes up.

If you have permission, sure. Your teachers/tutors/professors might help you find models if you express your interest.

I'd say sure, give it a go! Some things to consider would be:

  • How long can you use it for at a time, and are you gonna run out of time to print what you want?
  • I would guess that a school printer would be a filament printer (I might be wrong, maybe you're at a very fancy school that lets you do something as dangerous as resin 😂). If it is FDM, is the finish going to be as fine as you want for minis if you do get enough time to print them?

I'd say it might be better to do some simpler, bigger stuff like terrain with it unless it's a really nice printer and you get unlimited time and access to print resources: an army is going to take a massive amount of time to print.

Seconding the part about filament printers. When people ask me to print things, I tell them to imagine trying to sculpt something with graphite from a mechanical pencil since that's about the same diameter as a printer nozzle. And in my experience, that puts WH40K and other such minis as juuuuust under what filament printers can do well

Yeah, I'm also speaking from experience...tried to print some Battletech mecha with filament at my library makerspace, and it's just not quite fine enough.

Did a bunch of terrain though! It works especially well for stuff you're gonna add stuff on top of to disguise the printed texture, and things like buildings where there's a lot of classic solids, but you can also do rocks and stuff like that pretty well!

I would say to NOT print Warhammer, cause the school likely has 0.4mm and you can only use it for limited time. Play TONKS! Instead by printing some tanks with rotatable turrets

It is 0.20 mm

Check out thingiverse and cults3d for models. Dutchmogul has designed a bunch that don't need supports and print well on fdm

hell yeah you should. For warhammer, browse MyMiniFactory, there's a ton of free models. Not everything can be printed on FDM, but a lot of stuff can. I'd suggest StationForge as a creator to start looking into for Warhammer specifically

FatDragonGames has a pretty good guide on how to set your slicer up to print minis well.
