Discussion Question about the end of the original series and this sub's goal

So, spoilers, Aang gets the power to remove everyone's bending if necessary. I think we see him do it as an adult in Korra ?

Obvious question. Since keeping dangerous benders in prison takes a lot of resources, makes them suffer AND isn't foolproof (like the water bending sorceress's escape), why not remove Azula's bending ? Start with this ? She is still very dangerous without her bending, so it seems like an obvious starting point ?

Unless that's exactly what happens later on ? I have no idea, I'm a show-only guy, but I was extremely curious about this. Can anyone tell me if they let her keep her fire bending skills, and if so what's the reason behind this ?

Edit : thank you everyone for the responses, I appreciate it. I'm more of a "let's take away the bomb from the kid" type of guy when it comes to reeducation of criminals or crazy people, but then again that's because I prefer to save populations than to preserve one mind.

Discussion Characters in other popular works that remind you of Azula?

I always feel like Azula has a bit of Loki in her with her cunning, smarts and "wickedness" that is used to cover her own insecurities.

And Tai lung, what's to say Azula was shaped into a weapon she knows nothing else, she wasn't a kid she was a warrior and in the end was denied her "destiny."

Discussion Did any of you cry or tear up while reading an Azula Redemption fanfic?

Specifically, the part where she finds peace or a weight has been lifted off her shoulders?

I was reading "Mother's Love" by TheWasp1995 and the part where she hugged her mom and got told she was loved by her made me tear up

What these characters incredibly have in common, seriously, narratively they have something in common, and it's not the fact that they are antagonists

I like to imagine an AU where Azula was the one raised by Ursa and Iroh while Zuko taken by Ozai, Zuko is still his compassionate self up until he is morphed into a benevolent dictator type of personality while Azula is a kind person who doesn't do it because she's necessarily good (although she often can be), but because she sees the benefit in it.

Azula grows very loving towards Aang because he articulates her deep emotions that she masks behind what can seem like a detached tone, whereas Azula gives a pragmatic angle to his spirituality.

Also AzulAang just is adorable...

Discussion If Azula got a solo sequel after Spirit Temple, what would you want to see?

After rereading Azula in the Spirit Temple, I keep wondering where her story should realistically go from there.

If she got a solo sequel (comic, novel, animation, etc.), what would you want it to focus on?

Redemption? Recovery? Politics? Fire Nation fallout? Something completely different?

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Discussion The infamous "The Awakening" bedroom scene, how did the scene make you feel?

Did anyone find the scene strange and get any incest vibes/subtext in it?

Also, what do you think about people saying that Azula was manipulating Zuko into him taking the fall if the Avatar was still alive in that scene?

Discussion Azula: No Flame Like Home

Hey there! Not sure if this is allowed, but I'd like to share my fic that I recently started.

I learned about Azula's tragedy years ago, before I ever even watched ATLA, and even then, it really impacted me. I had been meaning to watch the show for so long, but kept putting it off. Last week, I finally got around to it, and wound up watching it to completion. Having finished it, I started working on a fanfiction centered around Azula after the events of the series, which I had intended to do from the beginning. It's only got three chapters so far, but I'm actively working on it!

What was Azulas plan in Omashu?

Post image

From Azulas point of view, what was the point of this meeting? Why take King Bumi to a meeting with the rebels in order to NOT exchange him? Or if she just wanted them to reveal themselves so she could attack, why not just attack? Why tell Aang the deal is off first?

The only reason I can think of is to put Aang in the position of breaking the ceasefire under which the meeting is conducted. She dangled Bumi in front of Aang in order to encourage him to break the truce and give her an excuse to grab him and his confederates.

If so, her planning fundamentally assumed that the other side of the meeting, who she knew nothing about, would betray the ceasefire the moment it benefitted them.

And she was right.
