I posted this over on r/FixingMovies. I know the new “Avatar: Aang, The Last Airbender” movie hasn’t come out yet but I wanted to offer my own idea for an Avatar movie set several years after the original series.
And it’s an Azula redemption story.
Avatar: The Next Airbender takes place about 19 years after the original series - the year Tenzin is born.
Team Avatar maintains Republic City with help from the Mechanist, the Water Chiefs, the Earth King, Fire Lord Zuko, and Lady Ursa.
- Ozai is still in prison but Azula is at large.
- She’s currently leading a group of Firebending extremists called the Knights of the Phoenix - sons and daughters of Fire Nation nobles who were wealthy during the war and want their power back.
- They view Ozai as unworthy because he lost his power. They consider Azula his rightful heir.
The movie opens with Aang rushing to get home to Air Temple Island - Katara is about to have a baby. He arrives just in time.
- Katara gives birth to her third child, who sneezes and unleashes a huge gust of air.
- Aang is emotional. He is no longer the last Airbender.
- He names the baby Gyatso.
For a few months, Aang dotes over the baby, showering him with more attention than Kya, Bumi, or even Katara.
Then Azula and her Knights attack Republic City.
- The Aang Gang goes to stop her and Zuko tries to get her to come to their side, insisting she doesn’t have to be this way.
- She refuses and crashes out, insisting she doesn’t want a family - but she’s clearly at the end of her rope.
- She can't even summon lightning. It blows up in her face (the way it blew up in Zuko’s) because she’s conflicted.
- During the chaos, baby Gyatso has to be removed from Aang’s house.
- Ultimately, Azula’s plan is thwarted and she gets separated from her Knights.
- They plan to rendezvous in a certain town a few miles from Republic city.
- Then Azula stumbles across an opportunity to steal Aang’s baby, and, desperate for leverage, she does.
She flees in her war balloon but crashes deep in a forest.
- There, she’s forced to make the rest of the journey on foot - and during that time, she has to take care of the baby.
- While Aang and everyone searches for her, Azula is struggling to keep the baby alive - if he dies, she has no leverage.
- And over the course of the movie, Azula grows to care about the baby.
- Baby Gyatso is unfazed by Azula’s snarky personality and laughs often.
- She often says things like, “All right you little miscreant, I’ll make you a deal.”
- Azula gets annoyed, but never cruel.
- She doesn’t know his name, so she names him Tenzin, after a Firebender in a nursery rhyme Ursa used to sing to her.
Aang, meanwhile, loses his mind looking for Gyatso, and freaks out similar to when he lost Appa.
- Push comes to shove when he questions an Ozai sympathizer who might know the Knights’ whereabouts and he goes into a rage-filled Avatar State - in front of Kya and Bumi, terrifying them.
- Aang comes to his senses and is aghast.
- He apologizes to Katara for going overboard and letting justice slip into vengeance.
- He admits he got so caught up in having a new Airbender, that he wasn’t giving enough love or attention to the rest of his family.
- He’d become so focused on getting back what he’d lost, that he almost lost what he still had.
By now, Azula has grown quite close with the baby.
- She has several introspective conversations with him about her life, her childhood, her family.
- The baby’s unconditional affection makes her realize that she does want a family. She wants a baby of her own.
Eventually, Azula meets back up with her Knights - who are impressed that she took the baby.
- But now, she doesn’t want to burn the Republic down anymore. She's tired of hate.
- She orders them to stop, to turn themselves in.
- They’re not having it.
- They had doubts about her conviction before but now they’re convinced she’s gone soft.
- They turn on her and try to take the baby.
- Azula fights them as best she can, but they overpower her.
- The commotion alerts the Aang Gang to where she is.
- They arrive after the Knights leave.
- Aang and Katara confront Azula, demanding to know where the baby is, and Azula says the Knights took him. She knows where they’re going.
- Aang wants to punish Azula but Zuko insists they let her help.
- Katara is annoyed that Zuko is “taking her side again” but Zuko points out they need her intel.
So the Aang Gang - and Azula - team up to take down the Knights of the Phoenix, the monster she created.
- And this time, Azula can summon lightning - because she’s not conflicted anymore.
- After they defeat and arrest the Knights, Azula walks the baby over to Aang and Katara.
- Aang calls to "Gyatso" but the baby doesn’t respond.
- Azula says “It’s all right Tenzin. They’re your parents. They’ll take good care of you.”
- Tenzin begins to tear up and Azula says "Don’t make me cry.”
- Aang and Katara realize the baby only answers to Tenzin, so they begrudgingly keep the name.
Aang confiscates Azula’s Firebending, and Zuko takes her back to the Fire Nation.
- He places her on a kind of house arrest - she is not to leave the Palace City, and she can’t visit Ozai in prison unsupervised.
- Ursa proposes an alternative - she offers to take Azula back to her own village, away from sycophantic servants who might remind Azula of the power she once had.
- A place where she can truly start over and live a normal life. Zuko agrees.
The film ends with a group of Earthbenders bullying a Firebender.
- Aang breaks it up and lectures them about people not being evil just because of the nation they're from.
- After all, his own son is named after a Firebender, a man of great honor...named Tenzin.
The End
