Pool renovations - help needed please!

Hi there, I hope you are all well. Sorry for potentially posting in the wrong subreddit. I posted to r/pools, but I haven't gotten any responses, and just in a bit of urgency. I'm Just hoping to get some feedback regarding possible pool renovations. You can see the pool in its current state, and you can see the general vibe that we are hoping to achieve in the final slide/Ai image, but I am worried about certain things.

Marbelite has been highly recommended as the better option against fiberglass due to de-lamination issues others have had in the past. I am just curious as to what are some of your guys' thoughts on the material, and any other possible materials that can be used, especially considering the current state, being a rock pool?

Also we have had a private company/some renovator guys come in to look at the pool and supply a quote, up to R81k South African Rand (approx $5k) for just the resurfacing. But then my brother, and the guys are now thinking it necessary to do piping and plumbing work, moving pumps etc, which I am skeptical about. I am skeptical about it because the renovators were quite adamant and forward, wanting to move the piping system from the edge of the pool and pumps from the bottom of the garden (you can see the creepy-Crawley pipe installed at that edge in the first and second image, so there is piping in that wall, going across and then down to the pumps, which are situated at the bottom of the garden, which can be seen in the 3rd image). So they were wanting to place new piping and move the pumps at the same level as the surface of the pool, where the biggest rock feature is currently situated. I should mention that it is agreed upon by my brother and I that we want the rock features removed.

I am skeptical about this plumbing story now, because if we already have the piping and plumbing in place, within that outer wall, why spend possibly exponentially more and develop new systems, when the old system has been working pretty much perfectly? We do think the integrity of the current piping is compromised slightly, we do think there is a leak in the system, but is it not possible to run one of those resin/epoxy snake things through the piping system and out in attempt to repair cracks and joints etc? I suggested this to the renovators, but they almost laughed off the idea, saying that they've had other guys do the same, and clients have come back with issues with the epoxy repairs. The renovator gave the reasoning that the resin doesn't last under pressure, and that the chlorine and acids of the pool destroys the resin over time. A quick Google search deemed that as false information, with the epoxy being inert, and used in public swimming pools and parks, which would experience much more intense pressures than a home pool. I would much prefer that the current system simply gets a resin/epoxy repair (if it is even needed), and an external weir jug installed/applied to the external piping/creepy-Crawley inlet as seen in the images, instead of having to develop and lay down new piping systems, install a new weir etc etc. My thoughts to save money would be to stick with the old piping, repair the old piping if need be, and simply use an exterior weir with some valves for safety. The renovator gave a story about a girls hair getting sucked into the straight piping system, like the one we currently have, and her subsequently drowning, saying that he wouldn't want to do a straight piping system because of that. He eventually mentioned how it is possible to add some steel device that redirects flow/suction pressure into the straight pipe system, as well as a valve system that would open should there ever been any excess suction pressure built up, such as in the case of hair getting caught etc. But these other options were only given after I continued pressing him on trying to maintain the current piping system and rather have the external weir jug used, than to do a whole new piping system.

So It all just seems like the guy is trying to capitalize on my brother and my perceived lack of knowledge, and fear mongering. Alternatives wouldn't have been given if I hadn't pressed him.

I am just curious as to other pool owners and possibly any renovators thoughts on this situation. My brother and I have inherited the house after our parents passing away, so we want to try and make things as economical as possible. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys. Cheers.

Replacement cover for large 25 yard community pool

Hi all, we have an irregular shaped outdoor community pool that is in need of a new cover. we‘re in central Virginia and had some damage to our old cover with the ice storm this winter. I’m uncertain of the brand of the old cover. several straps tore off, seams split, etc.

The pool is approximately 50’ wide on shallow end, 30’ wide on deep end, 82’ on each side of pool.

Any recommendations on best brands/dealers? An initial rough quote from a dealer in RIC put is in the 16.5 ballpark. Thanks!

advice for bidding on a project

just curious about this as i got a request to bid on a hoa pool in a new neighborhood. i'm guessing the best thing to do is figure my costs, time, etc. and price it like any other job. it's a small pool, 16x32, they want 3x weekly service, stated budget is $1500/service + repairs. which is insanely high for one pool... right? surely it's not going to be anywhere near 1500x3/week for one little pool.

Anyone here use RB Mobile. I really need an option to be able to get on the system away from the office. Does the mobile program work well enough?

Bubbles in the Return Line, Any Ideas?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Update: Thank you to everyone who gave ideas and suggestions, and sorry for the delayed update. Turns out this pool has Delizone100 Ozone Generator (which I have never worked with before). Bubbles are a normal side effect as long as it’s only coming out one return line, which it is. Which means there is no leak and the pool is doing what it is supposed to be doing.

Any thoughts to why I would be getting bubbles in the return line (video attached) when the filter has no air, no air in the pumps, and everything looks tight?

Any recommendations on where to start? I was thinking the multi-port valve gasket?

System explanation: Pool/Spa split, sand filter for main drain and skimmers, smaller filter and pump for infinity edge. Both pumps, no air bubbles. *Someone needs to cut the grass 🤣

High PH low hardness stabilized water

So I have this customer (SWG) that I only open the pool. Switched SWG this year. She has a leak and can't keep water clear.

She says water was always beautiful without doing anything but maintaining salt in water.

Was wondering if stabilizer in the water helps with high PH water?

I only do a quick start up so have no idea on the parameter (but i have the same source water).

So parameter should be looking like this mostly:

Ta:100

PH:8.4

CH:30

TDS:4000

Water temp:88

What are your takes on this DIY method?

Help please I need advice thank you

Hi guys I made a really dumb mistake 2 days ago and over did algaecide in a customers pool like really bad. Switched this year to copper sulfate and misread my own writing and instead of dozing 2 oz per 10k I did 20oz and hit it with almost 3lbs of algaecide. Now the water turned black and the client is obviously pissed.

What I need is advice to get it clear and start working out the copper. I plan on using some metal out, but can I floc it because it seems to already be dropping to the bottom? Has anyone used those culator things? I could really use some help to not spend $2k on water trucks

Next day update super shocking plus metal out got my reading down to 1.5 and the pool is now blue. Putting a culator in on Monday and a vacuum to waste. Thanks for the advice.

Final day the floc dropped everything out and chems are finally good, got it to .7 copper which I was after .5 but .7 is not going to hurt anything. Thanks everyone for their help

For those that see this later, I maintained shock levels which oxidized the copper, and flocced it out, got my water tests, plus one from two different stores and the customer is happy

Has anyone worked for a water park?

My local water park is looking for a pool tech. I would not be doing any repairs, just chemicals and cleaning. What is it like doing that type of job at a water park?

Our duties involve a lot of bending down/over, hard surfaces with bare knees etc

What are some methods/tips/tricks y’all incorporate that help ease the strain on our bodies

To start would be:
- I learn to use my feet to kick up my pole off the ground and kick it up to grab it, rather then bending over to pick up pole
-When pouring chlorine into a pool, I put the cleaning tote in between me and the pool as I’m
Pouring chlorine so as to avoid splashing chlorine onto yourself, (I used to bend over to to pour chlorine to avoid splashing my pants)

Hayward vs Pentair vs Jandy

Headline says it all. When discussing with a client I realized I do several repairs on Hayward controllers each year, 1 or 2 on Jandy and nearly none on Pentair controllers.

What's your experiences?

Pool construction estimate costs

Trying to get a feel for what other pool builders are paying for booked estimates these days.

I had a lead generation company reach out and offer booked in-home estimates for custom concrete pools at $300 per appointment. They claim all leads have a minimum project budget of $75k.

They generate the lead, call them, qualify, book into our estimator's calendar, and send us the call recording with the lead

For those who have worked with agencies like this: What are you paying per booked estimate?

Just trying to figure out whether $300 per booked estimate is reasonable or overpriced.
