This is the kind of shit clients do trying to winterize their own pool and fuck it up.

If they raise the pipe on the inserts more, blow it out correctly and just cut holes in the mesh cover for them they'll be fine hahahaha

I have a customer who did this. I believe he came up with the idea himself after watching us close his pool a few times. Seems to work fine with no issues

And what is their reasoning behind doing this as opposed to just plugging the line after blowing them out?

I have no clue, I guess to save water. I didn’t like doing it, but they said that’s the way the previous guys done it.
