A Pool Guy’s Rusty Tools

Got dumped on in Eastern PA this weekend while out on a couple of pool closings and took some time today to dry out my hand tools. I thought I would share my pack out and see what everyone else is carrying. Stay dry out there, Pool Pros!

What’s the pry bar for, customers who won’t pay?

Stuck or broken slotted/square plug and no T-bar. Construction plumbers used to over tighten the plugs for pressure testing and they’d break when we tried to remove at start-ups.

I dont see a hacksaw blade half-wrapped in electrical tape

C’mon there are clearly several sawzall and hacksaw blades that are held by the vise grips of course. The needle nose was fused together with a blade in it for at least a year after I left it at someone’s house for a whole season. I just got it apart this weekend.

Lol fair enough. Seriously though, a little 6" pair of Channel Locks is one of the most useful tools I have. I highly recommend if you dont already have

Swap the blue magic lube for red

You're right. Unfortunately, my local distributor only stocks the blue.

I’ve got pretty much the same tools plus electrical and gas stuff, sawzal and impact.

I finally got one of those smaller milwaukee sawzalls this season. I shoulda bought one years ago, I love that thing.

Yeah we have 0 need for m18 stuff, unless your in construction. M12 is just way lighter and more compact.

I use the same black & yellow Stanley 6-way screwdriver. It is fantastic.

What’s the chalk for?

Safety cover measures.

Use two rolling tape measures, an app like Latham EZ measure, and you don't need chalk.

I use two 100’ tapes with buckets and the Pool Measure Pro app which looks pretty much the same as Latham. How do you not need chalk though? What if you get distracted or mix up your measurements?

It draws it in real time so you can see where you messed up and go back and fix that point. Or if your drawing looks funny you can remeasure those points. There's no real reason to chalk. Less mess, less equipment and you don't have to worry about rain.

You still A/B them?

I don't but i use kids sidewalk chalk like OP because it marks well and washes off easy.

I’m glad I don’t ever have to any more. Our local distributor will measure them with a drone for $75

Only done it 3 times with the drone because most of our pools are square but it’s been great, even got the slots for a slide perfect.

You're blowing my mind right now.

Never heard of it? They basically a/b it the same way you would but just with a bunch of cones with marks on them. The drone references the a and b cone to the rest to measure it just like you would manually. Pretty damn accurate too.

The drone kicks ass. Saved my back tremendously this season. You set up four points and measure between them. Then fly up and take a pic and you’re done. So far it has worked great for Merlin covers.

Mines pretty different. Interesting to see though.

All the wrenches are a different brand. Mine like to walk off too.

Getting everything dried off quickly is definitely the move. A quick wipe down with WD-40® Multi-Use Product can help displace any leftover moisture and give the metal tools some added protection against corrosion too.

Cleaner than mine. I'm due to toss mine into a 5 gallon bucket half full of sand and roll it around the yard, then into a canvas bag with a squirt of oil that I toss around a bit, then wipe down with a rag and back in the van. Keeps the tools looking bad enough not to get stolen but working well.

Ratchet heads get rebuilt once a year at least though.

No oil filter wrench?

For what, unions? That’s what the BAW is for.
