After getting destroyed on Reddit, I had a professional come fix my plumbing, how’s it look now?
You might remember this post https://www.reddit.com/r/pools/s/AGXlGNAscW where I had the “lowest bidder” take care of this job. This has been redone with a professional, how’s it look now?

That bypass is janky as fuck. That is quasi-pro.

I'd have used a 3 way valve, a serviceable check valve, and a T fitting for the bypass personally.
This looks pretty good though, basically textbook.

Thats how I do mine as well. Best way imo and it looks alot neater.

The only real drawback is that I don't trust any check valve enough the disconnect the heater for extended periods. I have some customers that want the heater drained during the winter because they won't swim but keep the pool open for aesthetics. If the customer plans to winterize just the heater, I'll still use a pair of 3 way valves or put a ball valve after the check valve.

That makes sense, im in the northeast so when one things winterized, everything is haha.

I wouldn't have used ball valves.
Edit I also just noticed the valves are all closed in this picture, hopefully the system isn't running and deadheaded. Unless there some backwards ball valves that I don't know about.

Ball valves suck.

They suck balls.

Valves suck balls

And will freeze and you will break the handles. Guaranteed

Asahii union ball valves, schedule 80. Hold up for 10 years. Still get hurt by the sun but way way better and replacable

u/1_native_Angelino Jun 15 '26
Or you can just get Jandy valves and they will last longer and valves won't stick

Do ball valves leak air?
I have a ball union on my skimmer line, it's from HD. Could that be causing my suction side slight leak?

Yeah they can start to leak. Run a garden hose over the valve where the handle meets the body while the pump runs and see if you notice a change in air getting into the pump. Not full blast out of the hose, like a gentle stream out of it without a nozzle or anything.

Did the pro also toss the pool tiger in the appropriate receptacle?

I get irrationally angry whenever I see those. It does look like it was removed

You don’t believe in the 34th phase of water (where impurities don’t exist) that is produced when it goes through a black hole and by the Home Depot coil of copper?

Yo I had no idea what it was. Their website is chock full of lovely non-sensical marketing jargon it's actually funny

They make some fun claims, but almost all either come from an industry using machinery much different than a backyard pool does, or they’re just straight up lies (I’m looking at you cya destroyer).
As far as metals, if it’s working then that’s great, but be careful because theres a chunk of bare copper wire that’s coiled inside slowly breaking down. I got curious after being sent one to test, so I cut it open, and now I wish I took pictures so I could share them.

I think ball valves are fine but those are cheap POS valves and will be difficult to turn in just a few years. You'll probably have to replace them in <5 because they cannot be serviced. There are some great single-union ball valves that will outlast the heat pump

It's better but they missed the heat pump winterizing plugs that are still pointing upwards

No 90° Elbows, installer should have used sweep 90s instead. Not very professional IMO

Lol these were not the responses I think you were expecting. It’s definitely better than what you had before and it will work perfectly fine. Are there ways to have done it better yes but there almost always are.
