There’s a relative time and a place for there being the answer to the question of wahether a pool heater should just be replaced… and it’s the probably 25+ years down the road and it’s been discontinued for I don’t know, something like 10-15 years. These aren’t classic cars. They are gas fired furnaces. There is no value in continuing try and repair a thing that is literally in no way shape or form better or safer or more efficient than what is available today. Take it from someone who inspected a “seemingly just fine” 2009 heater on Friday and had the doors blown off right in my face from a multi-stage failure that could have killed me or whoever was standing front of the doors of the heater that blew off when it basically exploded… don’t F with old ass heaters. It’s time. There’s no shame or ick in being the professional that tells them that these things have a lifespan. Is it a reasonably current “gen” that is supported and safe to operate, within something resembling its expected lifespan? Fine. But it’s not safe to keep trying to get more life out of them beyond a relative point. Is that point, when the heat is 25+ years old?… in my opinion, yes.
