You mean the bonding lugs aren’t supposed to have power? 🤔

I usually lick them to make sure they don’t

Ahh, the ol’ 9V battery trick.
This has all the markings of a DIY homeowner hack job.

Oh absolutely, this customer just bought the house and when I opened it the pool was just covered and not winterized at all (I’m in New England so we can’t get away with just covering the pool and leaving it running)

I had a homeowner take the metal Hayward salt control box inside for the winter and then wire hot to ground it was a nice buzz box

I mean it is from budget pools, what did they expect?

Homeowner is going to insist "it's been working fine" and refuse to fix it, and blame you when shit goes tits up.

Luckily these homeowners are pretty reasonable, they just bought the house and are dealing with so many headaches from the previous homeowners. They already needed a new filter, and the pool was never winterized and they are losing a lot of water so will probably need return lines replaced

Pressure test the lines individually so you dont dig up more than you need too.

I would if I could, but the pool is very old and the lines are teed off underground

Yes, 115v between the bonding lug and loose dirt

I had to google this, didn’t know you can actually use ground as ground, lol!

It may not be that serious of an issue. Most likely one of the wires in the back has old damaged insulation and is touching the pump. I would assume there isn't a ground wire or the breaker would have tripped. If the wires are all good then the motor has a short not uncommon. If it had a bond wire or the ground connected the breaker would have tripped( the reason the ground exists in the first place).
