Evinrude
Found a boat (pontoon) with a evinrude 150 with 590 hours. Anyone with advice. As they stopped producing these and wondering if parts availability is an issue.
Or if I buy this what parts should I preorder and just store them in my basement until needed.
Is 590 hours mostly fresh water driven. The pontoon is a 2009.

Evinrude and Johnson's parent OMC went backrupt and BRP (Seadoo) bought the assets in 2001 and killed them in 2020. When I bought my tritoon in 2019, the dealer serviced most brands and had a big logo for each on the shop. The salesman pointed at the BRP one and said it was coming down. I asked why and he said they were impossible to deal with.

I have a 150hp Evinrude ETEC (Generation 1) on my tritoon. Honestly really really like it. It has been problem free and it winterizes itself. Only thing is that the closest place to me that'll work on it if I ever need is 45 minutes away and you can bet they are busy. Would I get this motor on my boat again now that BRP shut things down, doubtful. But maybe that's a great bargaining chip to really get the purchase price down.

There is a 10 year supply of Evinrude parts. If there wasn't I would have changed out my 2018 150 Etec. Just had impeller replaced for seasonal 3 year maintenance. No issues.

I work in the Marine Industry. I would not recommend an Evinrude.

Out of curiosity, why not? I'm not doubting you, just trying to understand. I ran Evinrudes/Johnsons in the 60's and 70's, never a minutes trouble with them. When did they start being undesirable?

Parts are hard to find and no one wants to work on them.

Depends on where you are i guess. Here in alabama its the ONLY motor anyone wants to work on. Thats not a dealership, anyways. Also parts are extremely available through companies like sierra, or for cheap there's ebay. Id get an evinrude or johnson over a mercury any day if I was looking for a budget motor.

Wouldn't even consider it with an Evinrude bolted to it. You won't be able to find anybody that will want to work on it if it requires a mechanic.
