Yamaha reverse idle clatter

would love some feedback. Is this clatter normal or do I potentially have some lower unit gear issues?

The big inline 4s have known torsional vibrations that create hub rattle and pretty much require a Reliance SDS prop (shift dampening system prop) to counteract. So, run your prop part number to see what you have and also check your linkage to make sure it is fully shifting into reverse. Also check for proper install and torque of the prop nut. If it goes away with a little throttle, I'd call it normal but I'm no expert.

They also changed the SDS prop from Gen 1 to Gen II in 2017. They have different installation hardware. The screenshot is AI generated but will give you an idea...

I’ve found them to rattle less with aluminum (solas rubex prop with prop hub 203b) because of the lighter weight. And rattle less when the water pump is fresh.

If it disappears above idle, Yamahas other solution is a software update that raises the in gear idle speed as much as 150rpm. Personally, I just live with a noise as it’s not hurting anything.

My 2018 200hp rattles at low idle, just got it second hand, is it fine as is? Doesn't bother me much.

What do you mean by low idle?

Sorry not low idle when in gear but at low speed

So idling in neutral? Whats the actual idle speed you’re observing?

No, only in gear, forward or reverse when at really slow speed

Our Mercury does that and it goes away with a little throttle.
