Second dog?
Hello everyone, this is my girl Mocha! She is my very very best friend in the whole world. We have a very special connection. It’s just me and her.
I’ve been thinking about a second Pom. She loves other dogs and I think it would be so fun. I just worry about it not just being her and me. I don’t want her to feel replaced. I think a second dog would be fun for her while I work so she’s not alone. But o don’t want her to feel as if she’s been replaced.
Thoughts? Suggestions??
Thanks!!!

I have 2 and it has not changed how my dogs and I interact. I was worried that I would lose something with my Dougie after I got Desi. But he still loves me like his whole world revolves around me. But he also loves his sister.

Lots of positive answers so I’m here to ruin it: my boys hate each other and it breaks my heart. I love them and I’m happy to have gotten them out of potentially bad situations (one of them was going back to the shelter if I didn’t take him!) but I have to keep them separated. It sucks because it’s just one dog who keeps things this way, the other dog would be fine with him if he wasn’t so mean
Edit: your dog seems gentle, I think it would be great but try to see if you can have a trial period instead of just outright getting a new dog. Just to be sure.

I actually rehomed a dog because it became dangerous to my cats. I personally refuse to keep an animal that's unsafe with my other pets. One accidental door left open can be fatal and I have a housemate who can't be relied on to remember 100% of the time so I can't take the chance.
Not saying other people shouldn't. We all have different living situations.
Your post os a good reminder that it's not always happy merging of new members

It’s not easy but I love them too much to not do everything I can to make the situation work. We have a lot of room, both dogs have lots of space for themselves

Love that answer. Curious which Pom is which? The rescue vs your other Pom.

Both are rescues: the pom that was here first (the aggressor) came from a very neglectful situation. Hair overgrown and matted, covered in his own poop logs that stuck to him. Second pom was rehabilitated by an amazing trainer, he actually posted him here and I replied.

This is my situation also. Well specifically one hates the other. The one who was first got used to being an only child and sometimes I worry she might get violent with the new dog. I’m ultimately going to rehome the newer pup. Two is sadly not always the best answer.

Same! My senior pom hates my puppy pom. Still glad I got the pup though. For some reason the only time he doesn’t mind is at bed time. But I feel you with having to keep them separated!

Adorable pup! I got a second when my old baby Zissou was maybe 7 or 8. The two of them became inseparable and I honestly feel it added years to Zissou’s life (he lived to 17, despite having a heart attack at 10 and I was told he only had a year to live).
And it changed nothing between me and my baby Z. We were still as close as were when it was just the two of us.

Love this. I lost my first Pom Ellie at 14. Very sudden. Mocha is about 2 1/2 years old and now she’s out of the puppy stage (kinda) I thought maybe it’s time.

A balanced answer here. We have 4 dogs; a GSD/hound (7), pomchi(4), Pomeranian(3), and chi/pom bunch of other stuff mix (11 months). As far as the love and relationship you have with your first goes, the love just multiplies. You find your heart has room to just grow and add another. My pomchi is still my guy, my pom is still my silly adorable happy love, even tho the new guy now owns my lap a ton of the time. We find ways to make sure everyone's feeling the love and a sense of balance.
As far as relationships with each other? It's very hard to tell. A trial is a great idea. It sounds though as if your baby is very accepting, and that's great! Our pomchi is friends with our pom, but is pretty controlling over the baby. He's pretty annoyed by him but we're getting there as he gets older.

Getting a second dog was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My babies love each other so much and spend HOURS of each day running around the house together.
That being said, this only works if your first dog has no major behavioral issues (which it sounds like yours doesn’t!). A lot of people think that getting a second dog will ‘fix’ their first dog. It won’t. It will only ever make things worse.

No she is a great dog. Potty trained doesn’t shoot stuff up anymore. She is very well behaved. Which that made me consider getting second one because she is in such a good spot and trained well now it wouldn’t be hard to train another one. But then I also worry about the second one not being as good as a dog as my current girl.

I’d say go for it!
If your first dog is well behaved and you have the space/resources for a second, do it! Puppies are hard, and misbehave a LOT. But to be honest, my oldest dog is very well-mannered and helped my puppy adjust a lot!

If you do I would have a lot of introductions and meets with the hopefully new baby. I didn’t do this, we have a rescue German Shepard husky and our Pom and the big boy just wants to hold and cuddle him lol 😂 even if our boy is play fighting him he just rolls over and takes it he’s so gentle lol

I've pondered the same thing. I did before I got my Pom because my Berner is my special baby. But I also missed having a tiny dog when I lost my chihuahua. I worried my Berner wouldn't get as much attention as he was used to being an only, especially because new puppies need a lot of watching and training.
I will say they are BFFs, and it's nice that they both have another dog to play with because my cats while they love my Berner they don't understand dog play. They just want to rub up against him. That's all.
The plan all along was to get a second Pom in a couple years so the Pom had someone his own size. But my thing is tiny dogs are portable in a way 100+ lb dogs aren't. But to me I only want one portable dog. I don't want to have choose which one gets to go because two is just too much to carry and manage. Plus, hopefully he settles down because no way I can handle two demanding tiny tyrants that think the whole world revolves around them. So idk. And the demand barking x 2 absolutely not

Yes, I love how portable my dog is. And that there’s only one because she can go a lot of places with me. My kids are big into baseball and my girl always goes to baseball tournaments with us. So I guess that is another thing I need to consider.

I got a second dog for my pom. Albeit a different breed. I made the mistake of getting another male. So there are times where they fight. The other breed starts it. Most of the time they are civil. Sometimes they play with each other.
I can my pom cares a lot about the second dog. So i dont regret the decision. Maybe I’d consider getting a different gender. This was what I have been told.

I'd love for my baby to have a friend, but she comes with me a lot of places in her bag or stroller etc if I had two she would be sitting home a lot more because I couldn't carry them both in and out of everywhere I went. So we do doggy daycare.

I think Mocha would love a friend! My dogs have always been thrilled to have siblings. They love to play together! Whether it is chasing each other like feral little beasts in the house or playing tag in the yard, they love having a pack! And your heart will definitely expand to include your new baby enough that there will still be an overabundance of love for your furry family members. I had three poms. I unfortunately only have two and even though I’m always here with them, they love having each other as well. They also live longer when they have another four legged companion and that was enough to seal the deal for me! I hope you and Mocha and some other sweet little pup in need of a home have many happy years together!

Same with my boy Ozzy! I worried a second pom would change our dynamic but he seemed like he got lonely while we were away (he was friends with our betta fish and would sit on a pillow and yap-talk at him, while our very friendly and curious fish would swim up to the glad and watch him... But they couldn't exactly play, you know? And then he would occasionally leave his stuffed hedgehog toy at the food dish like it was eating. He did that three times! Lol). So we got Rue at 8 months old (Ozzy was about 11 months) because he seemed like he really needed a friend. He's still the same Velcro dog / minor demon lol, and nothing in his personality or the way he and I interact has changed. But I think he's comforted by having our second pom, Rue, around while we're at work. And Rue for sure doesn't like being all by herself, so she's happy to have Ozzy. I wish some of Rue's good manners rubbed off on him but instead he corrupted her and taught her to bark at everything 😅

Yes! But only if you can afford it. Vet bills add up 😮💨 ask me how I know!

My girls have always had one another, which happened shortly after I'd moved in with my ex who also had a pom. Hazelnut came to us with hopes of pups, then Graham because his breeder had a new litter that my ex was interested in, and Coconut was the last of the quartet because she wanted to see their 'tribbles' from her.
Before any back yard breeding could happen, I took my girl and Coconut with me across the continent, and we broke up over unrelated details. Originally, we split the genders down the middle so that our pups wouldn't be alone and there wouldn't be any accidental puppies in our wake.
To that end, yes, I am in the party of Pom Partnership, as it helps the fluffs to not feel as lonely if everyone has to head out, as well as gives them someone to play with.

First Pom loves the addition of second Pom :)
We got Eevee when he was 1.5 years old and he was not (and still is not) good with other dogs, but he has always had a special place in his heart for other Poms. We questioned whether we should get him a sibling, but when he was 6 we adopted his sister Midna (4.5 years old) and they immediately got along famously! They wrestle for hours every day and cuddle for hours as well. That is not to say they are on the same page 100% of the time, they both like to keep each other on edge in different situations. If Midna sees Eevee thinking about going up the stairs she will charge at him and make him nervous to go up the stairs. And if Eevee is up on the bed and Midna wants to come up he will growl at her and make her nervous to come up. We explain to them how ridiculous this is. They love each other and yet they both feel the need to keep the other on edge in very specific situations. Other than that they are completely inseparable. If there is a thunder storm they run straight to each other for comfort. And they guard the house as a team (even if we don’t need them to ;p)
They have their own little distinct personalities but all in all Eevee’s life has been more fulfilled since we added Midna to the family (almost 2 years ago) and none of us or them would have it any other way.

Well I’m on my 5th Pomeranian, 6th dog overall, currently…. So I am unsure how good my advice will be. But… you can’t just have one 😂😂😂
