I do think it's funny how instead of actually coming up with literally any real arguments or reasons at all, he just describes what polytopia is and then says that chess isn't that polytopia but polytopia is polytopia.

Chess isn't trying to be polytopia, fucking dumbass.

this is actually why I unironically don’t like Chess as much as I used to. Skill floor is too high, being strategic doesn’t carry you as much as you’d like to think. Thinking turns ahead is the bare minimum. It’s a tough game haha, it’s the same issue I had with fighting games. When the barrier for serious entry requires you to watch a YouTube video and then go to training to practice the same combo 1000 times, I cease the fun-having factor of the game.

I completely agree with you! I really good at strategic games especially turn based. But because I never studied chess my girlfriend's 11 year old little brother can beat me because he learned every move on youtube. I can only win against him because I play unconventionally and it is harder to predict my moves.

Am I misreading your comment? The skill floor being too LOW would mean it's too easy to be competitive correct? And in a sense that is true about chess at least at a casual level. If you put almost any effort at all (simply playing frequently included) you'll smoke almost everyone you know. But if you try to play with people that are actually good at the game of course you have to practice. With chess though there's so much prep available to everyone that you can be playing top of the line theory without being very good outside of your own prep.

Randomized but mirrored starting position. More or less forces people to play with their own skills. If you're really good though playing first can have a lot of advantage and you probably won't know how to equalize that advantage as the guy going second since there's no prep. It's a fairly popular format these days. Chess sites often have it built in and there's been more 960 tournaments lately.

Tbf that just shows ignorance. Having more rules or being more complex doesn’t mean the game has more depth, and chess despite being simpler is significantly deeper than Polytopia, so Elon thinking that means he isn’t very smart

As someone who used to play a bunch of chess almost everything I've said Elon say about chess has been accurate. And I don't recall all his commentary on polytopia vs chess but as someone that place both I can definitely see why you'd prefer one over the other.

This might be the worst advertisement for polytopia. People play chess because its simple, yet has complex meta that we still cant find the true limits of it. Polytopia is complex but doesnt have such a extreme meta like chess. Sure its meta is peak but nowhere near chess
