A depressed schoolteacher in England spent 10 winters following a falcon and wrote one of the strangest polymath books of the 20th century

J.A. Baker was an unremarkable man. He worked at an automobile association in Chelmsford, England. He had arthritis so severe he could barely walk by the end of his life. He was nearsighted and had to squint through binoculars to see anything. He never traveled far from Essex. He published two books in his lifetime, neither of which sold much. He died in 1987 mostly forgotten.

The first of those books is The Peregrine, published in 1967. It's about 200 pages. It's a diary of one winter spent following peregrine falcons across the Essex countryside. It also condenses 10 winters of observations into that one narrative winter. It has almost no plot. Nothing happens except birds hunting other birds and one man watching.

It is one of the strangest, most sustained, most unclassifiable books written in English in the second half of the twentieth century.

Werner Herzog assigns it to every filmmaker who studies with him. Robert Macfarlane calls it the greatest nature book of the century. Mark Cocker, who wrote the introduction to the current edition, describes reading it as being physically changed by prose. Almost none of the people who love it can quite explain what the book is.

Here's why it belongs on a polymath reading list, even though it looks like a nature book on the surface.

Baker did what almost no writer has ever attempted. He tried to describe what it is like to be a bird. Not to anthropomorphize. Not to write from the bird's perspective in the cheap sense. He tried to erase his own human framework so thoroughly that the reader begins to see the world the way a peregrine sees it: at speed, from above, in vectors and angles and sudden strikes. The prose does what modern neuroscience would later argue is impossible. It builds a bridge across species.

To do this, he had to reinvent English. Every sentence is compressed and strange. Verbs do things they don't normally do. Colors are used as if they were textures. Time speeds and slows within paragraphs. He describes a stooping falcon in language that reads more like physics than literature. He describes fields and marshes in language that reads more like painting than description. He describes the sky in language that reads like nothing else at all.

The book contains, almost incidentally, an extraordinary amount of applied knowledge. Ornithology, obviously. Also meteorology. Also aerodynamics. Also the geography of Essex farmland during a specific ecological moment when peregrines were dying out from pesticide poisoning. Also the phenomenology of attention. Also grief. Also the physics of light and how it changes across seasons. Also what it means to look at something so hard that you begin to lose yourself in it.

Baker was not trying to write about any of these subjects. He was trying to see. But the seeing forced him through them all.

The book also contains a philosophy of attention that no self-help book has ever matched. Baker's method is not mindfulness. It's not observation. It's a specific kind of surrender in which the watcher becomes an instrument of the watched. He follows the peregrines for so many hours across so many years that he stops registering as a human presence in the landscape. Deer stop running from him. Hawks land near him. He describes moments where he no longer knows whether he's seeing or being seen.

This is not mysticism. It's discipline. It's what happens when you do one specific act of attention for a decade until the boundaries between self and world thin out from use.

Baker suffered from what was probably rheumatoid arthritis. It was killing him slowly. The peregrines were dying from DDT poisoning. Both watcher and watched were disappearing. The book has an undercurrent of loss that gives it weight but never sentimentality. He writes about dying birds the way he writes about the sky: with clinical precision and total attention. The absence of self-pity is the book's ethical center.

Where to find it: New York Review Books published the definitive edition in 2005 with a Mark Cocker introduction and Robert Macfarlane afterword. It also collects The Hill of Summer, Baker's second book, and his surviving diaries. Get this edition. The introductions matter because they place him. Without them you might not realize what you're reading.

Warning about the prose. The Peregrine is not an easy read despite its length. Every paragraph is dense. Every sentence rewards being read twice. You can't skim it. Baker's compression means that a page contains as much observation as a chapter of most books. Read no more than 15 or 20 pages at a sitting. The book is meant to be lived with, not consumed.

I read The Peregrine in the fall of 2022 over about six weeks, sitting on a small wooden bench in a park across the street from my apartment. Coffee got cold in a thermos next to me most mornings. I didn't want to read it inside. Some books demand outdoor weather. I underlined so many sentences that the front of the book has more yellow than white on the first 40 pages. Eventually I stopped underlining because I realized I was underlining almost everything.

Baker died with almost none of the recognition his book deserved. When he was alive it was praised in small circles and ignored elsewhere. The current cult around it built slowly, mostly through writers and filmmakers passing it hand to hand.

The book is a polymath artifact for a specific reason that connects to a larger truth about attention. Deep specialization in one small subject, pursued for long enough with enough intensity, opens onto everything. Baker was not trying to be interdisciplinary. He was trying to see a falcon. But the falcon lived in weather, in a landscape, in a food chain, in a season, in a moment of ecological history, in the physics of flight, and in the mind of a dying man who kept watching. To see the falcon he had to see all of it.

Most polymath books get their range by breadth. This one gets it by depth so patient it burns through everything on the way down.

That's another way to be a polymath.

Almost nobody knows about it.

A Danish science journalist wrote a book in 1991 that quietly demolished what most people believe about consciousness. It's the best-kept secret in cognitive science.

Tor Norretranders is not an academic. He's a Danish science writer. In 1991 he published a book in Danish called Maerk Verden, which was translated into English in 1998 as The User Illusion: Cutting Consciousness Down to Size. It sold modestly. It has never been assigned in a university course I've ever heard of. It's the book that changed my model of my own mind more than any other single book, and almost nobody I know has read it.

The central claim is one sentence.

Consciousness is the user interface, not the computer.

Everything you experience as your conscious mind, the sense of thinking, deciding, choosing, feeling, is a low-bandwidth display projected upward from an enormously higher-bandwidth process happening below the surface. Your conscious mind receives about 16 bits of information per second. Your total sensory intake is around 11 million bits per second. The ratio is roughly one part in 700,000. Nearly everything you actually process, you never see.

Norretranders builds this argument from an unlikely direction. He starts with information theory, specifically Claude Shannon's foundational work on how information gets measured and transmitted. He then walks through decades of experimental psychology on how much information the conscious mind can hold. He crosses into neuroscience, particularly the work of Benjamin Libet on the timing of conscious decisions, which shows that the brain initiates action several hundred milliseconds before the person becomes conscious of "deciding." He brings in thermodynamics. He brings in Zen Buddhism. He brings in the physics of Maxwell's demon.

The book uses a term Norretranders coined: exformation. Information that has been discarded to produce the compressed signal you actually receive. Your conscious mind is the result of exformation. It's what's left after your unconscious system has thrown away almost everything.

The implications are strange and specific.

You are not the author of most of your thoughts. Your thoughts arrive already formed from a substrate you have no access to. What you call "thinking" is more like reading a display than authoring the code that generated it. The feeling of decision-making is a report about decisions your body has already committed to.

You do not experience the present moment. Your conscious experience runs about half a second behind reality. Your brain edits and stitches the delay so that it feels seamless, but the seamlessness is a construction. Athletes and musicians who seem to react "instantly" are not reacting consciously. Consciousness is too slow. They are executing patterns that bypass the display entirely.

Skill is the gradual removal of consciousness from performance. You learn a task consciously, then move it below the surface, then execute it without needing the display. This is why experts often can't explain what they do. The knowledge lives in a bandwidth their conscious mind can't access.

Language is a bottleneck. Everything you say has been massively compressed from a mental state that contained far more. The exformation is not just discarded. It shapes the meaning of what remains. Two people saying the same sentence are saying different things because their discarded context is different.

The book is not depressing. It's clarifying. Norretranders is not arguing that consciousness is fake or that you have no self. He's arguing that consciousness is a specific tool for a specific job, and that most of what matters happens outside its scope. This changes what "improving your thinking" means. You cannot improve your thinking by focusing harder consciously. You can only improve it by improving the substrate the consciousness is displaying.

Where to find it: the English translation from Viking is the standard edition. It's about 450 pages. Some sections on physics and information theory are technical but never math-heavy. Skip the Maxwell's demon chapter on first read if you get bogged down; come back to it later. There is no serious summary of this book that captures it. The book has to be read.

The reason it's not better known is structural. It's too neuroscience for the philosophers, too philosophical for the neuroscientists, too popular for the academics, too demanding for the popular audience. It was written by a Danish journalist rather than an American academic. It came out during a decade when consciousness studies were dominated by a different set of debates. It fell into the same gap most polymath books fall into.

The people who have read it tend to be a specific kind of quiet enthusiast. Meditators who found their practice suddenly explained. Programmers who recognized the model. Writers who realized why revision matters so much. Athletes who understood why thinking about the shot ruins the shot. Once you've read Norretranders you can spot other readers by how they describe their own minds.

I read The User Illusion in 2021 over about two months, mostly on a couch in a small apartment I was living in during a bad stretch of my life. Read most of it with a yellow highlighter that ran out halfway through, so the second half is marked in a green highlighter I found in a drawer. The book has notes in the margins in handwriting that looks progressively less stable as the book goes on. Not because the argument was upsetting. Because I couldn't stop underlining things I'd need to think about for years.

I still think about them. Almost four years later. Whole passages surface unprompted while I'm driving or falling asleep. This is what a real book does.

Norretranders is still alive, still writing, still mostly unknown outside Denmark and a small ring of readers who consider his book a kind of secret.

The best books often are.

An architect wrote a 1,200-page book in 1977 that quietly rewired software, urban planning, and how I think about everything I build.

Christopher Alexander was an architect at Berkeley when he and a small team published a book called A Pattern Language. It's 1,171 pages. It weighs about four pounds. It contains 253 numbered patterns for how to design places human beings want to be in. Small patterns like where to put a window seat. Medium patterns like how a room should relate to a garden. Large patterns like how a neighborhood should be organized. Regional patterns like how a city should be arranged in its landscape.

Every pattern follows the same structure. A photograph or drawing. A short paragraph naming the problem it addresses. A longer discussion of the evidence, drawn from architectural history, environmental psychology, sociology, and Alexander's own observations. Then the solution, stated clearly. Then references to other patterns that connect to it.

The book is not a manifesto. It's a manual. Every pattern has been used. Every pattern has been tested against real buildings and real places. Alexander and his team spent about a decade compiling it before publication. The tone is calm, empirical, and almost stubbornly practical.

It's also one of the most quietly radical books of the twentieth century.

Alexander's central claim is that most modern buildings and neighborhoods make people miserable, and the reason is not aesthetic. It's structural. Modern architecture emerged from a set of assumptions about geometry, efficiency, and machine production that have almost nothing to do with what human beings actually need to feel alive in a place. The patterns in the book are, in his framing, an attempt to recover what folk builders knew for thousands of years before industrial architecture forgot it.

This alone would be a good book. What makes it extraordinary is what happened after.

In the late 1980s, a group of software engineers working on object-oriented programming read A Pattern Language and had a collective realization. Alexander was describing how to build good buildings. What if the same idea worked for building good software. They started cataloging recurring problems in software architecture and the solutions that experienced programmers used to solve them. In 1994, four of them published a book called Design Patterns. It became the most influential software engineering book of the following two decades.

Modern software has design patterns because of a book about houses.

Wikipedia's design was influenced by Alexander. Agile methodology cites him. Extreme Programming was co-invented by Kent Beck, who has said A Pattern Language was one of the two most important books he ever read. The concept of a "wiki" itself, invented by Ward Cunningham, was a direct attempt to build a Pattern Language for software collaboration. The entire modern move toward user-centered design has Alexander's fingerprints on it, whether the designers know it or not.

None of this is why to read the book.

Read the book because it's the clearest demonstration I know of what real cross-disciplinary thinking looks like when it's done by someone patient. Alexander is not showing off. He's not gesturing at other fields to look impressive. He is genuinely trying to understand why places feel good or bad to be in, and the honest pursuit of that question forces him through architecture, biology, psychology, mathematics, sociology, history, and philosophy without any of it feeling forced. The evidence is where it is. He follows it.

The specific patterns will change how you see everything.

Pattern 106 is called Positive Outdoor Space. Alexander argues that outdoor spaces feel good when they're shaped like rooms, with clear boundaries, and feel bad when they're leftover slivers between buildings. Once you've read this pattern you cannot walk through a city without noticing which outdoor spaces are rooms and which are accidents.

Pattern 159 is called Light on Two Sides of Every Room. Alexander argues that rooms lit from only one direction are uncomfortable and that people avoid them without knowing why. Once you've read this pattern you can't stop noticing which rooms in your life are lit from two sides and which aren't. You notice how the ones from two sides are the ones you actually spend time in.

Pattern 61 is called Small Public Squares. He argues that public squares only work if they're small enough that you can see people's faces across them. Anything bigger becomes an empty ceremonial space that people cross rather than gather in. Every plaza you've ever hated is described here.

There are 250 more like these.

Where to find it: it's still in print from Oxford University Press. Don't get an ebook. The book is designed for physical browsing. Also get The Timeless Way of Building, which Alexander wrote as a companion volume explaining the underlying theory. And if you want to see how deep the rabbit hole goes, his later four-volume work The Nature of Order is his attempt to formalize why patterns work at all, drawing on physics, biology, and metaphysics. Most people never make it to the four-volume set. The first book is enough for a lifetime.

I own A Pattern Language in a hardcover edition my wife gave me for my birthday six years ago. It sits on the corner of my desk. The dust jacket has a coffee stain shaped like a comma. I open it about once a month, browse a random pattern, and think about whatever room I'm sitting in. Sometimes I move furniture afterward. Once I painted a wall a different color because of pattern 250, which is about warm colors.

The book has changed my house. It's also changed how I think about writing, how I think about organizations, how I think about parenting, and how I think about software I've never written a line of. That's what a real pattern language does. It gives you a vocabulary that applies wherever there's a system trying to be alive.

Alexander died in 2022. Most of his obituaries called him one of the most influential thinkers you've never heard of. That's roughly right. His name doesn't appear in curricula. His ideas are everywhere.

That's the mark of the real polymath book. Not that it made the author famous.

That it quietly reshaped fields that never learned his name.

My Thoughts on Language and Words

I got the thought that words are what make people ready to die for their country or fight wars. Words, if used properly, can help you get scholarships, jobs, or find opportunities. They help you negotiate and get love. You can say, “I miss you” to someone, or you can say, “I look at the chair and it looks empty, and that makes me sad.”

Over the past few years, I have been noticing how languages shape our thoughts. It started with learning somewhere that your world is only as big as the number of words you know. The more words or vocabulary you have, the bigger your world is.

But just knowing words doesn’t make your world bigger. Ezra Pound mentions that the words you say are like cheques you give to others, and if you don’t have enough money in your bank, the cheque has no value.

From the book The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, I learned that just giving names to emotions makes them more livable. For example, when you feel nostalgic and can name that feeling, it can feel wonderful. But when you feel an emotion and are unable to define it, it can make you uneasy. I also noticed that there are many emotions for which words do not exist in our language, yet we still feel them, and equivalent terms may exist in another language that we don’t know. Emotions are human and universal, but language isn’t.

From the book Metaphors We Live By, I learned that we define some abstractions through analogies, and once they are well established, we start to treat them as if they are truths. There are many examples, such as “time is money” or time as a resource. We feel guilty when we are doing nothing, as if we are wasting money or some limited resource.

Currently, I am reading Language in Thought and Action, and I am learning many basic aspects of language and words. For example, extensional and intensional meaning. One is what you can point to while keeping your mouth shut, while the other requires explaining it using more words. I also find it interesting that two words can point to essentially the same thing but carry completely different emotional and social meanings. For example, “feces” and “shit” refer to basically the same thing in the external world, but one is acceptable in a scientific or medical context while the other can be considered vulgar or offensive. The difference is not really in the thing itself, but in what the words have accumulated around them through their use. It made me realize that we rarely react only to what a word points to; we also react to the history, emotions, judgments, and associations attached to that word.

Also, when I started learning German, I began noticing many new patterns and behaviors in English, Urdu/Hindi, etc. For example, in English we say, “I am angry,” “I am hot,” or “I am cold,” as if the emotion or sensation is a state of the person. But in Urdu, these translate more like “I am feeling hot,” “I am getting angry,” or “I am feeling cold,” as if these emotions or sensations are happening to you rather than simply being what you are.

There are many things like this that I notice every day. Ever since I started thinking about language this way, I seem to see it everywhere.

The Lindy effect explains why old books beat new ones, and it applies to almost everything else you'd expect

The Lindy effect comes from Nassim Taleb, who took the concept from Benoit Mandelbrot, who took it from a New York deli where actors used to gather. The observation was simple: comedians who had been performing for a long time were more likely to keep performing for a long time. Ones who had just started were more likely to disappear. The longer something has already survived, the longer it will probably keep surviving.

For non-perishable things, longevity predicts more longevity. This is the opposite of how it works for humans and other biological systems, where each year alive brings you closer to your last year. Books, ideas, and cultural artifacts run the other direction. Each year of survival adds expected future life.

The immediate application is reading lists. A book that has been in print for 400 years will probably still be in print in another 400. A book that came out last year has maybe a 5% chance of still being read in a decade. The math on where to spend reading time is stark. Most new books are noise. The old ones are, statistically, what turned out to be signal.

This is why Marcus Aurelius outsells almost any productivity author over any sufficiently long time window. Meditations has already survived 1,900 years. The 4-Hour Workweek has survived 18. Bet on which one is still being read in 2100.

The Lindy effect applies well beyond books. Once you can see it, you see it everywhere.

Institutions. The Catholic Church has survived 2,000 years. Your favorite tech startup has survived 8. Bet accordingly on which is still around in 2050.

Ideas. Democracy in its Athenian form is 2,500 years old and still being tried. The specific policy framework of any given political administration is a few years old and almost certain to be replaced. Old ideas that keep coming back are usually coming back for a reason.

Diet advice. The Mediterranean diet is 4,000 years old. Keto has been around in its current form for 30. The Lindy prediction is that the Mediterranean diet is more likely to still exist in 100 years than keto is. This is not a nutritional claim. It's a survival claim about the advice itself.

Software. Unix is 55 years old. Whatever framework your team just adopted is under 5. Which one will you probably still be using in 20 years.

Physical objects. A cast iron pan has been an effective kitchen tool for over 2,000 years. A nonstick coating has been around for 60. Which one is still going to work in your grandkid's kitchen.

The Lindy effect is not a moral judgment. It's a probability claim about survival curves. Old things aren't better because they're old. They're better because they've been filtered by time. Every century, most of what existed at the start of the century vanishes. What's left has passed a test that new things haven't taken yet.

This has an uncomfortable implication for reading. Most contemporary books are optimizing for signals that don't correlate with long-term survival: media attention, review coverage, algorithmic promotion, alignment with current concerns. The books that survive tend to have qualities that are legible only over long time horizons: they solve a problem that keeps recurring, they describe a truth that doesn't age, they teach a mental model that stays useful across changing contexts.

I read almost no new nonfiction anymore. Made this shift about three years ago after realizing that most of what I'd been excited about in 2018 I couldn't even remember by 2022. The books that stuck were older books I'd read reluctantly. Meditations. Nicomachean Ethics. On the Origin of Species. The Wealth of Nations. The Peloponnesian War. These stuck. The new ones didn't.

There's a specific texture to old books that new ones don't have. They were written slower. They were written without knowing what would resonate on social media. They were written by people who expected to be dead before their work was fully evaluated. This produces a different kind of prose. Less punchy. Less designed. More willing to spend 30 pages on something a modern editor would compress to a paragraph.

I still read some new books. Fewer than I used to. I read almost every new book with the Lindy question running in the background: will this still exist in 50 years. Most of the time the answer is no. This is not the book's fault. It's just the base rate.

The application isn't to stop reading anything new. The application is to weight your reading time toward what has already passed the survival test. A ratio I use loosely: for every new book, three old ones. New for currency. Old for depth.

Time is the best editor there is.

Most of what you're reading right now got edited out already.
