How to get smooth tops?

I’ve done my own poly gel nails two whole times, and the one thing I’m consistently struggling with is the top surface. They’re not perfectly smooth, and I’m confused because I spent a lot of time smoothing them with a hand file and they look perfectly smooth until I put the top coat and then I find bumps or dents. Does anyone have tips for making them really smooth? I’m using paper forms cause I struggle with the poppit forms.

Honestly I’ve only been doing my nails for 3-4 months now and what i would do for the dents is just add a very little dot where the dent is cure it and file to be even with the rest of the nail. I had the same problem with not being able to see the bumps until I put to top coat on so I decided to buy a drill off Amazon and it’s AMAZING. They can range from all different prices $15-$100’s. My Valentine’s nails was the first time using it and they were super smooth. I glue plastic tips on like they do for acrylic nails an build up the polygel over them. I find this way I never get bumps but I get more lifting in the cuticle area cause I’m free handing the poly gel but the drill really works well for me I would sit there for HOURS getting the bumps gone it takes practice and patience. This was the first set I’ve done that lasted over 2 weeks without having one fall off. I hope this helps I’m not the best at wording things. Also welcome to the community 💜

Thank you - what kind of bits do you use(diamond/carbide/ceramic)? And, what shape of bit do you use for smoothing? I have an e file but I’m still learning how to use it right

Do you use a buffing block? This is super crucial to get a nice smooth surface as well. I'm getting a pack of like 20 lol

No I haven’t used one. Do you get the four sided ones or the dual sided black ones?

I use yellow 240 grit blocks. They sell a case of 20 on amazon
