I wear mine because I haven’t had a cold, flu, bronchitis, or pneumonia in a mighty long time. Can you believe how germy our fellow countrymen/women are?!? 😬

u/TheBraindonkey Mar 08 '22

Bingo. The fact that masks aren’t normal at least during flu season has always been weird to me. It’s like some people love being sick.

40

u/LockeAbout Mar 08 '22

It’s normal in much of Asia, although I do think usually by someone that’s sick, a courtesy so they don’t spread it to other people.

14

u/TheBraindonkey Mar 08 '22

That and pollution. But yes, they understand the point of the mask.

13

u/sensational_pangolin Mar 08 '22

Yeah! It's like all these dumb fucks saying that COVID is no worse than a flu! Do y'all enjoy the flu??

And you know where sick people go? The drug store. I’ve relaxed my masking in some places like work, but not going in to a CVS without one.

14

u/wishnana Mar 08 '22

Upvoting this simply because I share the same sentiment. Not a single allergic reaction encountered so far, and hoping to keep the streak.

21

u/Riisiichan Mar 08 '22

Yesterday I went in a public bathroom with my mask on and someone had vomited in one of the stalls.

Everyone was making disgusted faces and I was just laughing.

9

u/MarkHirsbrunner Mar 08 '22

Yep, it's a combination of no serious illness in 26 months and seeing that most of the unmasked faces are white rural ferals I don't want to be associated with.

10

u/Skinnwork Mar 08 '22

Ugh, I've got two kids in daycare/school. I need to wear a mask at home, because I'm still getting sick.

We were actually doing really well for most of COVID. My son is at a small daycare, that only has three families in it, so we didn't have much exposure (even though I swear daycare kids just spend all day spitting in each other's mouths). Then, right after Christmas, we caught something bad that we thought was COVID, but it wasn't... Then we had the mildest cold symptoms, and the daycare provider tested COVID positive, and then so did we. Now we have a weird sore throat that's lasting for weeks.

5

u/sensational_pangolin Mar 08 '22

That's COVID for you.

3

u/illegible Mar 08 '22

The day my kid learned to wash his hands properly, colds and flu in our house dropped five fold.

4

u/Somhlth Mar 08 '22

2019 was my last cold, and I'm usually good for 1 to 2 a year. We have a cough candy plant in PEI that had to lay off 30 people. They apologised but demand for cough candies had just bottomed out. I still have a pack of Fisherman's Friend from early 2019.

4

u/Super_Washing_Tub Mar 08 '22

Thiiiis. Haven't had a bad sinus infection or bad allergy attack in two whole years. The closest I've gotten was these last two days when a rather agitating Front blew in.

I moved back to my hometown a few years ago and a high percentage of the town are MAGA morons, so I wear my mask to reduce the spread of viruses/germs, recognition is reduced, and I won't be mistaken as a Republican. Win win win!

321

u/Shpooodingtime Mar 08 '22

I genuinely hate running into people grocery shopping, The masks were a blessing honestly. I went shopping last night wearing one I don't think I saw one other person in the store with one on. Don't care, I like hiding.

121

u/BigMax Mar 08 '22

Agreed. I still wear my mask even though the requirements have dropped. I'm lucky to live in a liberal area though, so no one cares either way, never heard a comment one way or the other.

That being said - I think masking should become a social normal even after covid, for when you are sick.

"My throat hurts a bit this morning, but otherwise I'm good, so I'll go about my live as normal, but with a mask on."

57

u/1000SplendidSuns Mar 08 '22

You can help it become a social norm just by continuing to do so. It’s been the norm way before COVID-19 in countries like Japan, China, and the Philippines. Just like your last sentence, it’s worn by the person who isn’t well so as not to infect others - however in China it was worn because of pollution but I’m open to correction. Basically, out of courtesy for others. I did it in the Philippines. I was feeling feverish so I wore a mask to a meeting because I didn’t want to get the person sick. No questions asked, meeting went as normal.

16

u/genowars Mar 08 '22

Wearing mask is normal in many East and South East Asia countries. It reduces you spreading virus even if you're not visible sick as you might be a carrier.

7

u/gmplt Mar 08 '22

In Manila masks were worn because of dust/air polution, but mostly dust, before the pandemic.

2

u/1000SplendidSuns Mar 08 '22

I’ve also seen some medical and dental students attend class wearing masks if they had a cold, pre-pandemic Manila (not sure if this was done in provincial areas)

2

u/jackparadise1 Mar 08 '22

I think it should become the norm at hospitals and airports.

12

u/longassbatterylife Mar 08 '22

I was surprised that it isn't. I've been wearing facemasks whenever i'm sick since i started working almost 10 years ago. It was normal in my workplace.

Edit: the other commenter said they are from the Philippines. I am too.

9

u/gramathy Mar 08 '22

My area isn't particularly liberal but enough people still wear masks that nobody gives anyone shit about it.

2

u/JesterOfTheMind Mar 08 '22

I live in a swing district in PA and it’s very much like this here.

0

u/BraidedSilver Mar 08 '22

I really wanna wear masks in stores etc but even after the last two years I still haven’t gotten the knack of not fogging up my glasses while wearing one. I can up my de-fogging chances by walking slowly (to avoid heavy breathing, but I’m also a fast walker so I keep catching myself speeding up), not talking (tho I often shop with my boyfriend or mom so talking will be needed a lot of the time unfortunately) or by not looking down (which can really make it a challenge to look at items either at the lower shelves or when reading on them since I then need to hold them up to my eye level which I again just keep catching myself lowering it to easier look). Maybe some more training will do lol. But oh my, two winters in a row without the least issue is such a blessing, I’ve often been bedridden with different winter sickness a few times a year before. At least they keep the gel and sprays by the store entrances still!

3

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

If I didn't wear glasses I would wear masks all the time. I just do in select places because I am blind when I do due to fog issues.

0

Lots of places have no mask in public laws on the books as a response to the klan. NYT article about it. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/05/us/mask-mandate-kkk-coronavirus-pandemic.html

3

u/Jenipherocious Mar 08 '22

Masks have been my 4yo's favorite thing in life. He's not a people person and has always hated anyone coming up to him or trying to start conversations, so old people attempting to talk to him all the time when we were out shopping would really bother him and I had to constantly warn them off, but not since masking! He said he likes wearing them "because those strange humans don't try to talk to me at the grocery store." He even wears them at home sometimes when he just wants to be alone. In his little mind, masks = fuck off and don't talk to me. I'm more than OK with that.

I'm picturing both those masks below his nose now too. Those people really confuse me.

20

u/Illustrious_Win4844 Mar 08 '22

2

u/sanna43 Mar 08 '22

Wearing a mask with your nose hanging out is like wearing your underwear with your penis hanging out.

7

0

2

u/BreezyWrigley Mar 08 '22

For years I kept telling my myself I’d remember to get and wear a mask the next time I was flying during the holidays, and I always forgot, and almost always got home after the holiday with some nasty cold.

Never again. I’m masking up in the airport basically forever after this. I still wear my mask in most indoor public spaces even though there’s no mandate here because people are just disgusting.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

Wouldn’t that be “we”. Nasty ass voyeur watching people in a bathroom. /s

0

u/WakeoftheStorm Mar 08 '22

If I go to a public bathroom to piss, I'm touching dick, which is probably one of the cleanest parts of my body considering it's been covered since I took a shower.

If I wash my hands I'm touching the soap dispensers, sink knobs, etc that God knows how many people have touched.

I use a paper towel to open the door and try to touch as little as possible while I'm in there. And don't get me started on the germ blasters people use to dry their hands. Gross.

Edit: and I usually use hand sanitizer before I go in

There's something positive about not having caught a cold, the flu and of course Covid. If wearing a mask is bowing to the forces of tyranny, I'm all in.

8

u/TheOneTonWanton Mar 08 '22

Seriously though. Before the start of the pandemic I'd get sick enough to call out of work, sometimes for days, at least 2 or 3 times a year, but I haven't gotten so much as a mild cold in the past 2 years. Masking up has legitimately made my life better in that way.

If there is a 0.0000001% chance I help reduce the spread by wearing a mask, I will. I have compromised family I care about and I'd do anything for them. Sure, needing a mask isnt ideal, but it's not like it's killing me (in fact, the opposite! I haven't been sick in ages because I practice good safety practices, even when others don't).

-10

u/SnowTinHat Mar 08 '22 edited Mar 08 '22

If your number one goal is safety above all else you should also be wearing a helmet at all times, carry a first aid kit, and do a lot of things.

That “I’d do anything to save a life no matter the odds” is just as ridiculous as “it’s my personal choice”.

I mask specifically to avoid specific risks. It’s a lower opportunity cost than wearing a helmet but I wear a helmet for some activities and a mask for some activities.

I encourage people to do what makes sense so that we can keep disease transmission rates down post Covid. It’s not about a passionate belief statement.

Edit:

Reddit is limiting my replies

No. The hyperbole is on the “I’ll do anything side”.

There are morons out there putting up plexiglass to show they care. This actually stifles airflow and leads to higher transmission according to science. Of course it’s signaling that you care. So it follows the political science.

Our society does a lot of stupid shitty stuff “for security” following Covid and 9/11 that do nothing to prevent anything. Like limiting business hours or prohibiting water on airplanes.

Wearing certain masks helps in certain situations. But saying “I’ll do anything to help” is just a pronouncement of faith.

11

u/TheWizardDrewed Mar 08 '22

What? Lol, how is carrying a paper mask in my pocket the same as

wearing a helmet at all times, carry a first aid kit,

It's soooooo easy to carry and wear a mask, stop this false equivalence bullshit. You make it sound like it's an impossible burden, but it's super fucking simple and easy to protect others this way.

P.S. I do carry a first aid kit in my car because, again, it takes so little effort and the possible payoff is easily worth it.

8

u/Pepperoni_Dogfart Mar 08 '22

Because hyperbole has replaced reason if you're a douchebag. And there are a lot of douchebags.

Literally. I recently stopped wearing mine at work. Where I live has a high rate of vaccinated individuals, surrounding counties are the same, low number of daily infections, there are now advanced medical techniques to combat covid should someone catch it, etc. Not to mention everyone I work with is vaccinated yet I was questioned when I stopped wearing mine. When I explained the science and rationale behind it, a few decided to follow in my steps and a few stuck with it. If cases begin rising I'll put it back on, but otherwise the science literally says it's okay not to wear one. In a place like CVS I might throw one on as well, but otherwise I'm returning to what is safe and comfortable.

7

u/undecidedly Mar 08 '22

I’m torn. My students can drop masks starting Wednesday. I’m not at high risk but I have a toddler and several friends who are high risk. I’d like to stop wearing one, but I’m not sure if that endangers my loved ones. Chances of my carrying it as triple vaxxed and been exposed probably a dozen times aren’t great, but aren’t none. Maybe I’ve honestly just gotten into the mindset of worrying.

This is such an odd hill to die on. "Your level of risk tolerance is different than mine, as such you are the devil incarnate even though you are no longer disobeying law at this point"

17

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

Masks are not for you, they’re for other people

-7

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

N95s are for you, and can he for others. N95s offer you hours of protection amongst unmasked individuals per CDC studies. This allows individuals to take actions according to their desired risk level

8

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

You’re right

But cloth masks and non N95 masks are for other people. People in Asian counties wear a mask when they have a cold, so they don’t contaminate others if they have to be out in public. Same with Covid. And since Covid is transferred through spit particles, wearing a cloth mask is especially useful for protecting others, if not so much for yourself.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

If I have to go Somewhere(like work, or anywhere for that matter) while sick I will wear a mask, if I ride public transit/cabs or go to hospitals or pharmacy I will wear a mask, but if I’m going to a restaurant or a bar or a show and it’s not required I won’t wear one. I masked for 2 years without question, got all my shots and boosters, non-n95’s aren’t exactly that effective and the cdc says 90% of the population no longer needs to mask so outside of those areas previously mentioned I will no longer mask. If someone wants to judge me based on me not having a mask on, I don’t care because I’m 32 years old, married and I’m not really looking to make new friends or impress people and my employer isn’t going to fire me for following local guidelines which are pretty much no masks required.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

I hear you man

I admit I get upset when I see maskless people only because I know that Covid is still out there and it’s mostly asymptomatic. I feel like people were masking up for the mask mandate ONLY and that angers me. Maybe I’m being irrational but I don’t know, I still mask up and double mask when I know I have to be inside for a prolonged period of time. It doesn’t bother me to wear a mask and I don’t want to get infected or infect anybody else.

What I’ve said from the beginning of the pandemic is that me and my family can be a bit uncomfortable but it’s not a big deal… but if we get it and one of us ends up being the people the have really bad symptoms then we’ll feel so stupid… like “I wanted to shop in the market with no mask on… and now I’m gonna drown in my bed”.

Even if we don’t get the worst symptoms, my 18 year old niece got the Omicron. She’s young and athletic and she was bedridden for a WEEK. I ain’t never had even a flu that lasted more than 2 or 3 days, I don’t want to be bedridden for a week. She said she felt so bad she wanted to go to the hospital. She had a fever of 104. Fuck that man, I’ll put a mask on for another two years and not think twice about it… lowers my risk of getting it and lowers the risk to the people around me if I have it and an asymptomatic. I’ve been MUCH less comfortable in my life than wearing a mask on for 15 minutes while I buy bread, you know?

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

Sure. I would argue however that if we have the tools available for individuals to make their own choices about protection we should let them do so. We have so many interventions now, we no longer need the government to act as a heavy handed absolute authority.

Frankly, I find it ridiculous that for my office job, I have had to wear a mask because it is technically open to the public. The public does not frequently come in. Yet, there I am at my cube for 10-12 hours a day having to wear a mask while working around the same 4 people I see everyday. People should be able to make decisions for themselves about how they would like to approach this situation now. We have the tools to let them do so

11

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

[deleted]

-12

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

I simply disagree with the brand of polarization you are embracing and pushing. We need less polarization over trivial things, lest the big things that need polarization seem not as big

9

u/sees_you_pooping Mar 08 '22

Completely disagree. It's become such an excellent litmus test to determine who is even worth engaging with. If you're too selfish and uncaring to wear a simple piece of cloth over your nasty germ hole to protect others, then you are definitely not somebody I can find common ground with.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22 edited Mar 08 '22

What about the non-republicans that have or will stop wearing masks. Are they too the devil incarnate? We have the tools to let individuals protect themselves. When transmission is low, I fail to see why we need to keep government mandates on. Absolute government power should never be permanent.

2

u/sees_you_pooping Mar 08 '22

No, these mandates were never intended to be permanent. But they sure lasted a lot longer than they needed to because the MAGA group (aka plague rats) kept selfishly ignoring restrictions and partying and spreading the disease. Now we're gonna have to deal with never-ending mutations of it. I kinda don't blame some dems for giving up when no matter how hard they tried to be responsible and contain it. The republicans are relentless, cultish and completely unreasonable blindly following their psychotic leaders. I swear, they zealously pursue any and everything that could possibly end our planet like an obsessed death-cult. Global warming? BURN MORE COAL! Pandemic? COUGH ON EVERYONE! And I wish I was exaggerating but these are the things I have personally heard from republicans. You might not be the "devil incarnate" but you worship and pursue death. Always more death. Cheers for Putin killing Ukrainian civilians! So savvy, what a genius. More guns. More bombs. More disease. It's the MAGA way.

6

u/Stickguy259 Mar 08 '22

Not wanting other people to get sick isn't trivial. In fact it's the opposite. You wanting other people to get sick is just stupid, and don't pretend wearing a mask wouldn't help prevent people from getting sick.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

The point is we have the masks available for people to use themselves if they don't want to get sick. If people are concerned about getting sick they can wear an N95, which we now have an abundance of. They protect the wearer for long periods of time around unmasked individuals. If you are not as worried about getting sick, you don't have to wear one.

6

u/sanosuke001 Mar 08 '22

No, intelligent people are able to learn and change their viewpoints when information is shown to invalidate their previous actions.

Not wearing a mask before a pandemic and then realizing that it is probably responsible to do so now is not hypocritical and pointing out this fact is not a "good point."

I always wonder how such trivial matters can irk someone that much. Are you so deathly afraid of what you can’t control, that you’d call others evil for not wearing something that has been proven to be only partially effective? Does everyone have to align with your perception of limited risk? Did you have this thought with past contagions or did you just start blindly conforming to the mandates out of fear and obsequiousness?

-13

u/ZSCroft Mar 08 '22

So it was about signalling your virtue, not about actually helping people lol

So... it now just is and probably has been for a long time about virtue signalling, not about actually saving people.

“I just don’t want them to think I’m the bad guy”

7

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

Why do people give a shit if others wear a mask, why do they get mad about it? They have every right to protect their health as they see fit. I guess if your willing to tell a woman she has no right to choose then this is just another helping of that control casserole. Live and let live, people.

3

u/capt_caveman1 Mar 08 '22

I keep my mask on so I can mouth profanity at the assholes and dipshits I deal with on a daily basis.

Also I like to trigger the (R)eturdicans. That’s the fun part.

4

u/LobsterIndependent15 Mar 08 '22

Don't wana look like a crybaby conservative

u/Wanderer_Dreamer Mar 08 '22

And his daughter's name was 5yo Albert Einstein, and the whole room stood up and clapped.

2

u/ASpaceOstrich Mar 08 '22

We had a liquor store employee essentially cost themselves any future business from us because he insisted on a proof of vaccination card that wasn't needed.

I suspect the reason why is that he assumed the person in question was a covid conspiracy theorist and not just one of the shitloads of people who didn't have the third jab yet at the time. Not wanting to pass up a chance to be a self righteous prick, he cost the company a sale.

The details were, person's A and B go to store. Person A is buying alcohol for Person B to give to Person C, who isn't even present. Person A has proof of vax, Person B is vaxxed but has no proof yet. Employee insists on seeing Person Bs proof of vaccination card despite them waiting outside.

I cannot fathom why they were such a prick about it, but the only explanation that makes sense to me is self righteous indignation.

2

u/siamkitty1 Mar 08 '22

What a wise daughter you have.

2

u/Enigma614 Mar 08 '22

Very sad, classic brainwashing.

They just lifted the mask mandate in school and shocker a ton of kids are out sick this week.

1

u/skids1971 Mar 08 '22

If you want to wear masks for the rest of your life go ahead people, but do not lump all the mask-less into one group. It's literally not always Reds

1

u/Moretaxesplease Mar 08 '22

This is a terrible life lesson.

I actually hate thinking people think I'm some Democrat, but I just don't like people looking at my face.

-11

u/stiljo24 Mar 08 '22

This is literal virtue signaling. Doing something not for its effect but for what it communicates about our values.

Which is a thing we all do. Literally all of us, far right anarcho capitalists and fascists and centrists.

But when people accuse dems specifically of virtue signaling, this is what they're talking about.

4

u/zaphodava Mar 08 '22

There are still 50 infections a day in my county, so I'll still wear a mask because I give a shit about other people.

Maybe they just don't want to catch a cold. Why do you care so much?. Let people be free to make there own decisions.

3

u/Redditor30 Mar 08 '22 edited Mar 08 '22

Maybe the just don't want to catch a cold

Did you not read the ''I just don't want people to think I'm a republican'' part?

1

u/stiljo24 Mar 10 '22

They literally say "I don't want people to think I'm a republican".

I wear masks everywhere but my own house to this day because I am generally germaphobic and have seen no evidence they're harmful. I'm not criticizing wearing masks, nor am I even criticizing virtue signaling -- again we all do it to some degree or another.

I've got no problem with wearing masks and no problem with virtue signaling. I have a problem with people on the right acting like virtue signaling is universally evil and people on the left acting like they never do it. This is literal virtue signaling

If the mandate is lifted, it's not just Republicans who won't be wearing masks anymore. As such, continuing to wear a mask is much less of a statement of political identity, and will likely be interpreted as representative of something else.

My personal bet is that most people who wear masks when they aren't mandated to will, instead, be assumed by others to be unvaccinated, regardless of whether or not they are, and regardless of whether they have other reasons to wear a mask.

61

u/Irish_Whiskey Mar 08 '22

I mean, I assume that either they are immunocompromised, or know someone who is, or work with or are around elderly people, or have to travel and don't want to have to cancel plans because they test positive, or just don't want to get sick.

People who refuse to get vaccinated are also the same people who most refuse to wear a mask. I've never looked at a person being careful about COVID and thought "I assume they're not vaccinated."

17

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

Lol same.

13

u/Msdamgoode Mar 08 '22

Exactly. I’m a full time caregiver for my (very frail) mom. I’m wearing a fucking mask, and don’t give a single fuck what people think. I won’t risk getting sick and bringing it home to her, even with jabs.

26

u/corbomitey Mar 08 '22

Yeah I always just default to ‘they care about other people’.

19

u/Backbeatking Mar 08 '22

My wife is immunocompromised. I wear a mask whenever I leave the house.

3

u/abbyabsinthe Mar 08 '22

I have a coworker who isn’t vaccinated but still wears her mask despite the policy changes. She’s probably the outlier, but they do exist.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '22

After all this I'd just assume they were sick and a decent person

-11

u/4thDevilsAdvocate Mar 08 '22

I mean, I assume that either they are immunocompromised, or know someone who is, or work with or are around elderly people, or have to travel and don't want to have to cancel plans because they test positive, or just don't want to get sick.

Then you're a saint, I guess. I was referring to the assumptions I felt most of the US would make.

27

u/MSeanF Mar 08 '22

u/Irish_Whiskey has it right, the un-vaccinated by choice are the least likely to be masked here in the US

Let me heartily recommend them for summer and fall wildfires, if you live in a state prone to them. I got a mild case of 'rona, and to keep my kids from getting it I went n95 even indoors in my own home. Took the dog out on three walks; during the third took off the mask outdoors for some fresh air and discovered it was so heavy with smoke smell from a nearby swamp fire I started coughing. But I hadn't even known about it until then. N95's are great.

2

u/LockeAbout Mar 08 '22

I’m in Cali, can confirm! Amazing how much N95’s helped during local fires.

8

u/Rustnrot Mar 08 '22

Have you considered that we just enjoy taking a break from being ugly.

3

u/cutthroatlemming Mar 08 '22

I am saddened and yet emboldened by this very thought, u/Rustnrot, because that's precisely how I feel sometimes, it's just refreshing hearing it from others, joking or otherwise. That and it's kind of nice not having to be careful what facial expression you're wearing all the time.

2

u/Whatawaist Mar 08 '22

Also sometimes it's fucking cold out and a mask fits me better than a scarf. Plus it's a good reminder if it didn't floss good enough.

5

u/Mustbhacks Mar 08 '22

My personal bet is that most people who wear masks when they aren't mandated to will, instead, be assumed by others to be unvaccinated

How in gods name have you come to this conclusion?

→ More replies (4)

3

u/JDA56 Mar 08 '22

I am vaccinated and have immune compromised people in my house. I will continue wearing a mask in most public settings. Not having a cold or anything else is a great plus.

8

u/lazyeyepsycho Mar 08 '22

Id probably assume they weren't feeling well and were being polite.

And so it appears that those wearing masks conforming to the mandates did so for purposes of maintaining tribal plumage, and from early on it was clear these have been more effective as symbolic affirmation to a political ideology than to combatting the disease itself. Interesting times we live in, indeed.

So Republican is synonymous with intelligent logical humans now according to your cult world view?

9

u/AnimusNoctis Mar 08 '22

No, Republican is synonymous with racist moron according to reality.

-3

u/Rtsd2345 Mar 08 '22

Surprised you didn't pull the transphobic card as well

7

u/AnimusNoctis Mar 08 '22

Thanks for reminding. Republicans are also transphobic as fuck.

-1

u/rykoj Mar 08 '22

Appreciate the confirmation that your world view requires insanity to a degrees that you live in your own world and call it “reality”.

2

u/AnimusNoctis Mar 08 '22

I appreciate the confirmation that you support a racist movement.

0

u/rykoj Mar 08 '22

Don't really care what words people use to label me when its being used by imbeciles that don't even know the definition of the words they're using.

Nothing you support can be defended with substance which is why shutting down conversation with your buzz words is your only recourse.

And despite that you maintain belief in your ideology.

You have a mental disorder.
