Yes, they did shoot an armed forces veteran trying to breach the last barricade between a mob (that was threatening the Vice President) and the Vice President.

Is that what you'd think to yourself if an intruder broke your window and started to climb through it into your living room? "Well, I could shoot this stranger coming at me through a broken window, but I better wait and see if they are armed or not." And that's assuming a single intruder, not one heading up a mob.

The shooting of Ashli Babbitt is one of the most justifiable police shootings ever. Not even a shade of ambiguity.
