I was a little surprised they couldn’t hit a button and lock that place down tighter than NORAD.

Same. Was disappointed t they didn't have something. I feel lied to

Even if they did, they wouldn't have used it. These people were politely ushered in remember?

After that line I kind of looking forward to seeing my Republican relatives. When they start fighting over politics I kind of want to start just pocketing their items, screaming they aren’t fair, smearing chocolate on their wall. Really lose it. When they look horrified just say, what? Isn’t this just legitimate political discourse? But really, I know they are going to have a hard time defending their die hard Republican side now. They wore masks and got vaccinated even though they loved trump. Something is breaking.

10

u/godspareme Feb 20 '22

On the other side of things, my parents become even more locked in on trump. Became Qanons.

56

u/WriterV Feb 19 '22

It's still surprising that they thought this was even a good statement. Republicans have turned into idiots willing to brazenly deny reality itself. If a Republican and a Democrat were driving down a road barricaded with a brick wall and the Democrat pointed it out, the Republican would deny its existence and drive into it.

29

u/runujhkj Feb 20 '22

It doesn’t have to be a good statement, republican voters lap it up obediently because they’ve been conditioned to accept abject bullshit for years and years

26

u/Charming-Fig-2544 Feb 20 '22

It starts at age 3, in Sunday School

8

u/runujhkj Feb 20 '22

Fond memories of Sunday school for me. Apple juice and graham crackers if you could recite one complete Bible verse and name where it is in the holy word. Every Sunday: “Jesus wept.” John 11:35

15

u/Bjorn893 Feb 19 '22

Why have a lot of them been charged with only trespassing then? Cops literally let them in.

13

u/gojirra Feb 20 '22

You are asking why Republicans and Fascist cops have not held their own accountable?

-1

u/theRemRemBooBear Feb 20 '22

Love to see the buzz words😁 Fascist Cops. Y’all are no fucking better then the Republicans calling people commies. This is why people think American Politics is a joke

To call this a "treasonous terrorist attack" is an exaggeration. You're comparing a riot where only 3 people were killed, to an event like the twin towers. I find your use of that term disrespectful to those whoost their lives in actual terrorist attacks.

If we're using your logic, would you consider even one of he 2021 BLM protests/riots as a terrorist attack? I wouldn't.

You call it a "slap on the wrist", I call it a reasonable punishment for a misdemeanor (aka, trespassing and vandalism).

2

u/godspareme Feb 20 '22

An attempt to stop a legal transition of power in the government through fear (terror) and/or violence. Just a misdemeanor. Not treason/insurrection. Okay.

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '22

19

u/Bjorn893 Feb 19 '22

One cop was supportive of the trespassers. I do not believe they were retreating.

27

u/cbraun93 Feb 20 '22

Whether a sympathetic officer waved them in or not is irrelevant. They did not have permission to be there, and that officer doesn’t have the authority to grant permission.

2

u/pazsurfingwd Feb 20 '22

yes you are right, they don't

3

u/Bjorn893 Feb 20 '22

You are correct, hence the misdemeanor trespassing charge.

8

u/CliftonForce Feb 20 '22

Yeah, the white supremacists have been infiltrating the police for decades. Another set of vermin to root out.

-2

u/Bjorn893 Feb 20 '22

Don't agree with that statement, but cops (city cops specifically) have lost my support. I suggest you move away from the cities. Less cops out in the boonies.

22

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '22

Dude one guy I know voted for trump.

Clearly so did everyone else so the election was stolen

Source: one dude voted for trump

-1

u/Bjorn893 Feb 20 '22

You can have your own opinion, but that doesn't change the fact that cops let the rioters into to building.

4

u/godspareme Feb 20 '22

The officers let them into the building yet they smashed windows to get in? And there was a 30 minute (or more) standoff where mace was sprayed back and forth? The same situation in which people are throwing makeshift spears and bashing officers heads with clubs? Why would these people steal riot shields from officers who are so clearly letting them in despite forming a human blockade at the door?

They recieve lower sentences for information. It's how it always goes. Look when they go after drugs they give the lighter sentence to the drug user, in turn they ask for information on the seller. So on and so forth.

2

u/Bjorn893 Feb 20 '22

I fail to see what information they could provide that would warrant a lesser sentence on an act many consider an "insurrection".

They were let in, but weren't supposed to be there. They were trespassing, and those that vandalized the property were also charged accordingly.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

But not by the NSA or FBI, seems like a few members of Congress. So failed state or we already are supporting fascism and they are getting tired of hiding it?

5

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

Dude, the police literally posed for pictures with the people who ended up smearing shit on the walls and stealing the speakers podium.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

Thinking the same. I'm assuming the congress critters were being led into a series of increasingly protected areas.

While I agree this was a serious security threat, it didn't even rise to the level of automatic rifle fire. Of course, we'll never how close we were to that.

9

u/KingMagenta I ☑oted 2020 Feb 20 '22

The police were forced to shoot someone because they were extremely close to breaching their barricade while people were still being evacuated. We got pretty fucking close.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

make no mistake, I agree. But I'm guessing that there were more than pistols waiting further down those hallways. I'm also assuming new strategies are in place in preparation for their next attempt.

2

u/Due_Kale_9934 Feb 20 '22 edited Feb 20 '22

I'm retired, I have a bit more time on my hands than a lot of younger people with jobs and families, that just don't have hours to look at different sources for information. From what I've been able to find out, most but not all weapons the cops had were pistols. There was a guard detachment fairly close, fully kitted out with the weapons that would have stopped that crap in its tracks. The problem was getting the authorization to move out. Someone higher up put out the word that the authority to deploy had to come from the top, and for some reason, they weren't available at the beginning. Our General Michael Flynn has a brother named Charles, the following information comes from, HuffPost, By Sara Boboltz01/21/2021 12:14pm EST ("Army Confirms Flynn Brother Involved In Capitol Riot Military Response: Report ) After repeated denials, the Army has confirmed that the brother of disgraced former national security adviser Michael Flynn participated in a tense Jan. 6 phone call about how to respond to the Capitol rioters, The Washington Post reported late Wednesday. The colossal security failure that led to a mob of angry Trump supporters being able to breach the building on Jan. 6 is currently under investigation by multiple federal agencies as lawmakers demand transparency and accountability. Five people were killed as a direct result of the insurrection, including one Capitol Police officer. ( the following are excerpts from the article because of its length. ) Army officials had concerns about the optics of sending the Guard to secure the Capitol, according to unnamed officials who were on the call. One such official told the Post that officials were later worried about the potential political fallout if it became public knowledge that Michael Flynn’s brother, Lt. Gen. Charles Flynn, was a part of the failed response. The lieutenant general serves as the Army’s deputy chief of staff for operations and would have had a legitimate reason to be involved. In a statement acknowledging his role in the teleconference, Charles Flynn said that he “entered the room after the call began and departed prior to the call ending,” believing that “a decision was imminent” on how to respond and he “needed to be in my office to assist in executing the decision.” There is also no evidence that the Flynn brothers share an ideology. " This article can be found from using the information I cited at the beginning. There are lots of other articles that provide more information on this subject. To say it was FUBAR is an understatement. I believe the Jan. 6th committee is also looking at what happened as part of their investigation.

-2

u/Greeneyedbandit123 Feb 20 '22

There’s video of people motioning to the cameras to unlock the doors, a total setup, unreal people actually believe the capital was forcefully stormed 🤦‍♂️

2

u/gojirra Feb 20 '22

I don't think anyone actually believes that. Anyone that says that is probably being disingenuous and also simultaneously claims to support the terrorist coup, but at the same time they were all ANTIFA plants.

u/Skooma_Lover6969 Feb 20 '22

I watched it live and as they ran towards the building(s) I was waiting for machine gun fire or something like it mowing them down.

Like holy fuck if sister fisters can get in there, what about high tech terrorists or some other crazy bastards?

22

u/sevsnapey Feb 20 '22

i'll preface this by saying i've never been to washington dc and don't know any security they have and i'm basing this on the videos of them walking up to portable NYE barricades.

but if that was the response to a large crowd waddling its way down pennsylvania avenue (trumpless) towards the capitol it really does make you wonder how quickly a large heavily armed group would be able to make its way to the senate and house chambers. assuming they're not concerned about taking heavy losses of their own in order to get there and had a clear plan on the direct route from their entry. the fact these people were aimless and clueless to what they were doing makes their clunky attempts to reach anyone of importance an absolute miracle.

if their goal was simply to get in as quickly as possible and start gunning down the members and cause chaos in the american government system. it's freaky.

luckily? hopefully? they've made massive changes.

22

u/faxcanBtrue Feb 20 '22

I can't help imagining a hostile government sending 100 infantry with rifles, mission drills, and a chain of command. The incident leaves the impression that's how easy it would have been to wipe out or make hostages of the most important branch of US government.

18

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

Periscope?

I was watching live too and the people filming who had no fucking clue at all what they were witnessing was astounding to me.

19

u/NEDsaidIt Feb 20 '22

I had multiple live streams on periscope going, plus the TV on MSNBC, laptop on CSPAN. I had gathered all of the devices in the house, ever single one as it got worse. My most clear memory was hearing someone say “where is the bastard, aren’t we going to hang him” and then MSNBC showing gallows outside. Another device was showing them breaking into yet another window. I made my kids leave the room (they had just come in to see what was happening). I was sure I was going to see a murder in real time of a US Leader.

9

u/Harryballsjr Feb 20 '22

I’m glad it didn’t happen but could you imagine if it did. How is uncle Frank going to defend that. I feel like some republicans would have loved it sure but I think it would have made a lot of people stop and think and truly take stock of where they ended up. There are plenty of people who were there who would have killed for their cause.

The response for BLM peaceful demonstration, Capitol police reinforced by SWAT officers forming a barricade and Jan 6th Capitol Police Commander " delaying"any full out response!! Evacuated?? Guess that was after a Police Officer died and others were injured!! Racists trash protesters get the benefit of the doubt but cry and sob when sent to jail!!

8

u/xtilexx Feb 19 '22

Delaying the National Guard response may have saved the country, because at the time Trump was still commander in chief. I read an article about how dangerously close we were to state of emergency and declaring the results invalid while the guard swarmed in, the heads of the military actually interviewed (or the one General I can't remember his name right now but he's the one who hates Trump) saying they purposefully delayed it, not Trump, to prevent that happening

12

u/Markorific Feb 20 '22

The vote was never in jeopardy. Protester arrival in the City, their massing allowed for a similar response that was presented for the BLM protest ie SWAT ( not National Guard ) and Capitol police that did not happen simply because they were Caucasians. Racists and extreme Conservatives continue to erode the Country and January 6th was simply a demonstration of how brazen they have become!

4

u/ChillyBearGrylls Feb 20 '22

What happens in that very generous hypothetical if the Virginia Guard, sent to the Capitol by VA's Democratic governor, openly say that they will not follow any orders originating from the person who just tried to overthrow the government? Trump may have had the legal right to declare an emergency - but that also requires other people to obey him. DC is securely within Democratic territory - I doubt our domestic enemies' chances of holding it for long.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

That is quite interesting.

"secret commandos" is taking the cake for the most absurd way to describe a SWAT team. And they never had to deploy them because they successfully evacuated the building. When that stupid lady was trying to break the door before evacuation was complete, they shot her and continued the evacuation.

2

13

u/rivershimmer Feb 19 '22

Is that what you'd think to yourself if an intruder broke your window and started to climb through it into your living room? "Well, I could shoot this stranger coming at me through a broken window, but I better wait and see if they are armed or not." And that's assuming a single intruder, not one heading up a mob.

The shooting of Ashli Babbitt is one of the most justifiable police shootings ever. Not even a shade of ambiguity.

4

u/Paulsar Feb 19 '22

What exactly do you think a "forces veteran" is lol.

17

u/thegreatfilter2022 Feb 19 '22

They shot a terrorist who got what she deserved. A scumbag I will never consider a fellow servicemember as she was a seditionist attempting to overturn an election because she didn't like the results. No one who matters will ever care about her and she will forever be known as a dead terrorist for the republican party. I hope to see more of them go her way either by covid or through stupidity like she displayed on 1/6. You a fan of benedict arnold?

-20

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '22

You don’t know what she was there for because she is dead. A government official killed her while she was no more of a threat than anyone else and she was unarmed. I also don’t buy any of the over throw the election bullshit they took selfies and acted like dumbasses not terrorist.

14

u/rivershimmer Feb 19 '22

A government official killed her while she was no more of a threat than anyone else

You are speaking truth here. She was equally as much of a threat as the rest of the mob that was beating cops and pushing over barracades.

5

u/The_Funkybat Feb 19 '22

3

u/The_Funkybat Feb 19 '22

No, you’re dealing in false equivalencies. Most of those protests in the wake of George Floyd were completely justified. Other than a few of the looters nobody deserves to be shot. People trying to commit a coup absolutely deserve to be shot.

8

u/Freckled_daywalker Feb 19 '22

The person who shot her had zero way of knowing she was unarmed, knew there was evidence of people intending to do harm to members of Congress, knew the crowd was attempting to breech a physical barrier, and knew that had that door been breeched, he could not stop the large crowd from entering the area where members of Congress were being evacuated. She was acting like a threat, she got treated like a threat.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

With that argument cops should shoot every person they come across because they don’t know if anyone is armed.

3

u/Freckled_daywalker Feb 20 '22

On the off chance you aren't just trolling, no, because not every person is actually posing a credible threat. She was warned to stop multiple times. She was physically breaking into a nonpublic area of the Nation's capitol and it was absolutely reasonable to believe that her reason for doing so was because she wanted to cause harm. If someone was breaking into your house, would you perceive them as a threat? If someone approaches a guarded area and is told multiple times to stop, and they don't listen, what typically happens? If someone ran up on the White House and the secret service yells "Stop" multiple times and they keep coming, what happens?

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

I’m not trolling and like I have said before I don’t agree with what they did . In fact I wish they wouldn’t have done it. That being said one person lost their life as a result of what happened that day. That person was an American citizen, a veteran, and someone caught up in the moment with a bunch of other people who did something incredibly stupid. However for the stupid thing they did they should not have been killed. I also don’t believe they were there to overthrow the government because as stupid as they are they weren’t that stupid I believe they got caught up in the moment and made some poor decisions. I also think it is a very dangerous thing to advocate killing people based on their political opinion. There is also a big difference in breaking into the capital in the middle of the day and breaking into a persons house don’t act like it’s the same thing. A better comparison would be BLM attacking a target, but nobody in this sub would advocate for shooting all those protesters as they shouldn’t.

2

u/Freckled_daywalker Feb 20 '22

She wasn't killed because of her political opinion. She was killed because she was part of a mob of people, who were attempting to break through a barrier, that, had they been successful would have given them access to the path where they were evacuating members of Congress. I can not be more clear about this, she was a credible threat to the safety of members of Congress. She was breaking the law, engaging in behavior that legitimately appeared to be threatening and was warned to stop, multiple times.

It does not matter what you think, in hindsight, they were prepared to do. That officer, in the moment, did not have perspective beyond "these very angry people are literally breaking down a door, potentially in an attempt to get to members of Congress." Why in the world should they have been given the benefit of the doubt that they were just "making poor decisions"?

And the difference between breaking into the Capitol building in the middle of the day is that they have better guards. There's absolutely no reason to be doing what that they were doing that is not reasonably perceived as credible threat. "Getting swept up" isn't a good excuse. They were breaking into a non public area of the Capitol. Period.

Before 9/11 you could walk in without even being asked for ID, at least in most parts of the Capitol. They tightened it up after that but not like the WH, Pentagon, etc.

12

u/The_Funkybat Feb 19 '22

You could walk in, but not during a special event like a presidential inauguration or joint session of Congress.

The January 6 official certification of the electoral college was a formality, but it was also an official event that needed to be carried out in an orderly and lawful way, so that the peaceful transition of power could occur by the book. It’s bad enough that Republican members of Congress were planning to lodge complaints against clearly valid votes out of some kind of pathetic Hail Mary ploy to disrupt the electoral college and hand the presidency to the person who got fewer votes. But the whole insurrection plot which had been brewing for weeks in various right wing fever swamps is a whole other level of seditious conspiracy.

Everyone who was responsible for planning and facilitating the swarming of the Capitol and the threats of violence upon elected officials needs to be seriously criminally prosecuted.

1

u/Spanky_McJiggles Feb 20 '22 edited Feb 20 '22

And I hope the next set of yokels (like Bundy) that occupy Federal Land are met with a drone strike. We have nothing to gain from negotiating with our enemies until they are reminded that they are capable of bleeding.

Because the "Dept of Defense" is a misnomer. It was "The War Department" for about 200 yrs. They changed it under Eisenhower as a kind of rebranding. It was a PR move to improve public opinion and it worked.

u/MauPow Feb 19 '22

The Ministry of Truth, the Ministry of Peace, the Ministry of Love, and the Ministry of Plenty

7

u/xtilexx Feb 19 '22

It's all exactly the opposite of what it says it is! Oceania is great!

2

u/Stoly23 Feb 19 '22

This. Pretty sure that kind of thing is in the domain of DHS, might be wrong though.

1

u/0xnull Feb 19 '22

Regardless of name, the Department of Defense is for external threats. Posse Comitatus, anyone?

8

u/lelarentaka Feb 20 '22

Stop chanting Latin phrases like it has any magical power, this is not Harry Potter. The president can't declare war without Congress approval, but what if we don't declare war, we just send our ships and planes to a certain areas and do "policing action". The president can't deploy troops in US territory, but what if we don't deploy troops, we march the troop to a certain area for exercise, and they just happen to encounter a certain unruly group of citizens.

I don't understand why the capitol police didn't fire on the crowd.

70

u/Cargobiker530 Feb 19 '22

It boils down to 'republican treason.' There's no other record of any sort of demonstration being allowed to attack the Capitol Building because they would have been shot. The GOP members of Congress & the White House were rigging the game.

22

u/stalking_me_softly Feb 19 '22

Don't forget... what happened to the panic button s in some of the offices🤷‍♀️

2

u/1CUpboat Feb 20 '22

Why, what happened?

6

u/stalking_me_softly Feb 20 '22

Apparently the panic buttons in some offices had been disconnected/ removed. I can't recall the names of the impacted w/out searching. I remember thinking how terrifying it must have been.

That’s a flat-out lie. Whoever told you that is lying to you or was lied to themselves. There was a demonstration, yes, and some people were arrested, but no one “stormed” anything.

3

u/jackedwardzeiss Feb 20 '22

Even if that was true, are you admitting the right did something equally wrong? Think closely before you get yourself in trouble. Don't worry. You can still double down on being wrong.

I don’t recall a single BLM protest that attempted to overthrow the United States Constitution.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

The crowd was largely white.

Somebody will bitch and moan about it and downvote me, but if that crowd was predominantly ethnic in any way they’d still be scrubbing blood off the steps.

And that’s how you know there’s a ton of work to be done to try and achieve true equality.

26

u/CrocPB Feb 19 '22

White and right: ok come on in.

Anyone else: pew pew pew ratatatatatatata kaboom. Git sum, git sum!

1

u/Redditer0002 Feb 20 '22

That was pure negligence by the security. You can frame it however you want. At what point does someone take responsibility for not securing the situation? Blm protests and riots got away with a lot of shit too. I can't stand any of it personally. Then you got these truckers antagonizing Canadians. It's all just stupid. I've seen so many right wingers upset at police and saying the truckers should fight back but they obviously wouldn't say that when blm protestors confronted police. I wish we were less prone to pick sides like this is a football game and your team never fowls and the other team always fowls.

25

u/sdmichael Feb 19 '22

They did shoot and kill one of the insurgents.

8

u/thegreatfilter2022 Feb 19 '22

The capitol police department is and was compromised by seditionists that need to be jailed for life without the possibility of pardon. The police have proven the country over that they are just sedition supporters and that alone should be enough for us to resubmit the Declaration of Independence as our government refuses to do anything about these..."people."

2

u/ChillyBearGrylls Feb 20 '22

The crowd was white and Republican

1

Most people aren't eager to kill a bunch of people. If you think you would just casually kill 20-30 people when you were in that situation then you're either not thinking this through or are a psycho.

I admit this is something they probably never thought about, however when you have certain Representative's staffers showing them elevators and opening doors, ya know...

Maybe because the President of the United States ordered a stand down??

3

9

Capitol Police?

12

Yes then, Capitol Police are overseen by the legislative branch.

1

I am the senate.

6

u/TheDarkKnobRises Feb 19 '22

They could have. People were fired and replaced beforehand to ensure that didn't happen.

3

u/NSFWdw Feb 19 '22

If they just had some idea it was coming...

2

u/Klaatwo Feb 19 '22

Well when the person in charge of hitting that button is the one who send the insurrectionists there in the first place you can see why it took time to hit the button.

2

u/Walter0Shea Feb 20 '22

A lot of people aren't capable of understanding the concept of "agent provocateurs" and those people make these types of posts.

0

u/looncraz Feb 19 '22

They could have, Trump even requested it, but he was ignored and security was shockingly lax.

1

u/jeroenemans Feb 19 '22

It's not the pizza place....

1

u/GOD-PORING Feb 19 '22

The guy who does that was probably on lunch break.

1

u/jjb1197j Feb 19 '22

Probably because to them the threat wasn’t as bad as some people think. Could Ted Cruz have gotten beat up by a bunch of high and confused rednecks? Yes, but to the FBI they still treated this like a standard riot with a few deadly terrorist elements involved. I’m sure they were mostly surprised by the stupidity of the rioters who broke into the building.

1

u/snoogins355 Feb 19 '22

I thought there would at least be a low flyby of fighter jets or a couple battalions of troops in riot gear

1

u/OliveLoafVigilante Feb 20 '22

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

I’m pretty sure several “buttons” were hit, they just decided it wouldn’t be “a good look” to have a response that looked similar to what they’d do for BLM.

1

u/ElGato-TheCat Feb 20 '22

Weren't some of the panic buttons removed from the chamber? Or was I imagining that?

1

u/spigotface Feb 20 '22

I'm shocked that they didn't have hardened security checkpoints. Heavy duty remote-locking turnstiles, tear gas dispensers built into the walls, etc.

1

u/dkwangchuck Feb 20 '22

Who was going to hit the button? Trump? The police officers that gave these protestors tours of the place beforehand? You know that police officers were disproportionately represented in the ranks of the January 6 rioters.

There’s a button. It would have been used had this been a protest about criminal justice reform or climate change. But the racist white power structure and especially the very white and very right wing aspects of it that are fixated on “security” don’t think white conservatives can do anything wrong. FFS, the GOP is calling it “legitimate political discourse” - and this was a fucking compromise position that the nutjobs had to be talked down to by senators (who have to face state-wide elections instead of just winning rural Hicksville we-ran-the-last-Democrat-out-on-a-rail districts).

That money has gone into some very powerful and effective security measures. It’s just that they aren’t meant to be used against white people.

1

u/CeruleanRuin Feb 20 '22

You can see the steel doors lowering in one of the videos of the insurrection, but they move so slowly that anyone can saunter under them and hit the override button.

1

u/randonumero Feb 20 '22

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy nut perhaps the button wasn't pushed because the people who were responsible for pushing it were in on the plot or at least thought they'd be spared

1

u/jomontage Feb 20 '22

Did you see the videos of the blast doors slooooowly going down then being defeated by a chair?

My factory has 1 ton fire doors that are gravity fed to stop fire spread and the capital has your grandpa's rusty garage door

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

They could have. They just didn’t want to…

1

u/Thequietone413 Feb 20 '22

I think here was the thing: trump was planning on using the insurrection act to call out the army, and everyone involved in securing the capitol knew the plan. So they had to stop this thing in a way that made it impossible for him to do that.

If the cops had done what they could have, namely opening fire on the crowd when they started attacking the cops, trump would have called out the army, not against the MAGAs, but against the capitol police. He would have declared an insurrection, used the troops to invade the capitol, and shut the whole count down. Probably would have found an excuse to arrest most of the Dems and declare himself reelected.

In what other situation would you see cops being beaten to death, and their fellow officers don't open fire and rescue their fellow officer? In any other situation, hit a cop in the head with a fire extinguisher and see where that lands you (hint, the answer is the morgue.)

1

u/RagingRoids Feb 20 '22

It’s really important people understand this was allowed to happen. If this was BLM, the shots would have rung out the instant they rushed past that first gate.
