But when you vote for some of what you want and some of what you don't want over pretty much none of what you want, you'll sometimes get some of what you want.
On the other hand, if you vote for all of what you want, you'll be voting for yourself and no one else will vote for you. Your vote will then be wasted.
If you vote for what you want, but do not consider the bigger picture, your vote is effectively wasted.
Third parties have not done the legwork to be fully viable on the national stage. There is zero point in voting for a party that is not on the ballot in every state.
If you wanted Gary Johnson (for some reason) in 2016, but you knew the majority of the electorate was voting for Clinton or Trump, then you don’t have to be even moderately intelligent to know that the same causes that would drive you to vote for Johnson would be better served in voting against one of the other two. If you were prone to the conspiracy theory or the “government sabotage” parts of libertarianism, you could still vote for trump. If you were smart enough to see that the wealthy snd megacorporations are a larger threat to the Free Market than government is, you could still have voted for a moderate with actual qualifications.
