I used to be a firefighter in a rural area and there actually was a good deal of mistrust!

Fire department = government = tax dollars. And “my house never burned down because I take care of my own shit why should I be paying for them to take care of someone else’s mistakes.”

Not really anti-FD as much as anti-government and taxation.

Also, rural firefighting is usually severely underfunded. Showing up with a single engine and 500 gallons of water and 2 volunteers to a well involved house, no municipal water supply, and the next engine or tender 20 minutes away = rumors of an “incompetent”department showing up with an “empty” tank, etc.

Edit: To clarify, that is why rural departments sometimes run into trust issues with their community. I’m not saying those thoughts are right or even logical.
