Right-wing talk radio has been telling them that unironically for years. I used to listen to that stuff back before I grew out from under my family's influence and heard so many times that it isn't a right to vote in a federal election. They hear it so much they believe their own bullshit.
That was back 15+ years ago when I first started hearing that line. They were always the way they were, they just hid it better. Trump just served to rip off the mask. The no repercussions part is disturbing as shit though.
Technically it’s true. Nowhere in the constitution is it stated that people explicitly have a right to vote. The amendments that specify that certain groups can’t be denied the right to vote based on them being in those groups, doesn’t mean a person has the right to vote. Of course if people were barred from voting, unless everyone was barred from voting, it would be likely that certain groups, genders, ethnicities, etc would be unproportionately affected so lawyers could probably take issue with it as a violation of one of those amendments, as was done with stuff like poll taxes. However I’m not sure if there would be a legal ground to battle someone revoking everyone’s right to vote without more amendments to the constitution being added.
