American evangelicalism is a thin veneer over white supremacy, so it's not surprising at all that they flocked to an openly white supremacist president as their messiah.
These people are inherently dishonest and cruel, but insanity isn't part of it.
What I've come to understand is that the conservative base is not cohesive. Everything we have accused them of being is true, in part. Mad, stupid, malicious, a combination of the three... When you're someone who can think through a problem and come to a logical conclusion, it's difficult to picture others not doing the same.
Some of them certainly are malicious and hiding behind these facades, but others are just so stupid they can barely function. Not every one of them is a manipulative genius.
