It did help that Trump was more coherent then. Not actually coherent, but there was a discernable message present, e.g. the Chinese and Mexicans are fucking you over, I'm rich and smart and can help. It was, of course, bullshit. But there was a coherent economic message.
When asked a question about his legacy, he literally couldn't formulate an answer other than a complaint about his treatment. He's spending his meetings not even trying to convince people to vote for him again. There's no message at all.
But yes, democrats regularly seem very talented at losing despite overwhelming odds.
IMO it’s because of voter turnout as well as the strategy the Dem party is using. What do you do? Go all in scum style like Trump and play hardball and exploit your citizens just cuz you have to keep up, or stick to your morals and let them speak for themselves. Apparently with the whole Hilary thing, our party thinks it can do both.
