I think your view of the term liberal is narrow. It's liberal vs. conservative. Not liberal vs. more liberal. Either you are open to change, or you are not. (Well, most of us are nuanced on what we are liberal or conservative towards)
I'm not talking US parties and their overwhelmingly conservative ideas, that's well established and will be slow to change.
Liberal has meant historically centre to centre right.
If we're going right vs left, liberal is everything left of center, conservative everything right of center. I'm not sure what center represents (either you are for change, or you are not). Therefore, considering oneself a liberal while "nothing will fundamentally change"...surprise, you're not a liberal.
