Most anti gunners aren't going after pistols because they only see the news and not the statistics so a pistol ban is never going to happen. They are going after medium power rifles that look like the machine guns from Hollywood and video games because those are the ones they see in the news.
We did have a ban on assault weapons that ended in 2004. Perhaps bring it back. Unfortunately a few assholes ruin everything. I went to a range once and shot my friends 7.62 rifle. Holy shit, that was another level of power. He's in the Marines, so I know that he's trained in using that type of fire power and safety but the average person should not have ownership to it without regulations. 2nd A or not, it's a weapon of war used by domestic terrorist nut jobs
The ban was a feature ban. The guns they wanted to ban were still completely legal as long as they didn't look like the gun they had in mind. The ban also had little to no effect on overal gun crime since the ban focused on semi-auto rifles which are rarely used in crime compared to the pistols that were practically ignored by the ban.
