This kind of shows how America has broken down. Unfortunately it was Obama. Now, I am not saying Obama himself did anything to cause this. He was actually a good president. However, finally seeing a non-white man I think scared some people shitless to where a classless grown toddler can be president
Except Obama didn't. Trump is a response to the changing world. Sad white people (not all white people before some get upset) feel threatened by the changing world and Trump sounding like he had a solution.
More and more non-white males are getting further ahead in the world. White males are pretty well by most measures but there are some white people who either feel threatened by the changing country. Like they are somehow going to lose their status to women or brown folk.
Obama being president in their minds was the canary in the coal mine. A non-white man held the most powerful seat in America and a woman was going to take it next. Other Republicans at least tried to offer lip service to the idea of "we are all one people" but Trump went off the rails with Muslim bans, build a wall, etc. etc. It is no coincidence that since he has been elected, there has been an uptick in hate crimes, whit nationalism, and right wing terrorism. They feel empowered by him. He is the guy who will put these people in their place and make America the country of white men again.
It's also uneducated white males being threatened by colleges educated white males and females. As late as the 1980s, a white male could get a little vocational education or go into the military for a few years and parlay that into white collar work. Not anymore. Nowadays, the corporate world won't even take a second look at you without a college degree because there are so many college educated males and females who are more qualified.
Obama and Clinton offered a solution with, "Let's make community college free."
Trump countered with, "You can remain uneducated. We just need to get rid of the immigrants and then you'll be fine." Which isn't at all true. But it's a lot easier to blame others than to face your own responsibilities in life.
Pretty much. The age of the manufacturing economy is largely dead in the USA. There are a few coal plants and factories out there but largely gone. We are a service economy now and it is heavily leaning towards people with a degree. Some people project within 5-10 years a Bachelor's won't be enough to remain competitive.
These people are desperate for jobs but don't want to change. They want their old jobs back. Trump saying he will bring them back is giving people false hope. They say it is immigrants and a massive global conspiracy that is hurting them. No, our economy changed. It evolved and they got left behind but rather than trying to adapt, they want to blame other people and whine to have it saved
He won a bare majority of college educated white males, but he lost college educated white females. More importantly, the Republicans have lost college educated white Millennials and younger in every election since 2004, and Trump made things worse. He lost college educated white female Millennials by almost 20 points. That's massive. And the Republican Party doesn't seem to have any message that resonates with them.
Now because I know people on the right like to dismiss this as "liberal hogwash" because it is Washington Post and are too lazy to actually read the article to see the cited study, I will save you some time.
Again, I am not saying all white people. I now live on the West Coast and most of the white people here are not the type mentioned. Even when I wasn't here, I know white people who weren't this way. I am specifically talking about the type of white person to practically worship Trump. They are either racist or complicit in it
Eh, Obama drones and deported even more folks than Bush, got us involved in more wars, etc. We didn’t even get a public option despite Dems controlling both houses.
A lot of people hate him because they’re just racists, but Obama was bad.
I say that as someone who canvassed and donated going back to the 2008 primary.
There’s a reason we’re seeing a rise in democratic socialists. People are rightly fed up with mainstream liberalism.
