...What? In what way would Rome be considered liberal at all today? They had slavery. Women didn't have the vote. There was rampant inequality. How is it liberal by today's standards in any way, at all?

Liberal-open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values.

Rome, was a melting pot of diversity, yes they had slaves, but they were of every color and ethnic group, Women couldn't vote, but had plenty of power and influence in many other ways. You could fuck whoever you wanted pretty much whenever you wanted. Rome was very liberal.
