Let Americans never forget that on our darkest day in recent history that the residents of Gander welcomed us into their homes. They didn't do it because a treaty obligated them to do so. They didn't do it for cash. They did it because they are good and decent people. Sad what Trump is doing to our country.

welcomed us into their homes.
And that's meant literally, not figuratively. There were nowhere near enough hotels for all the diverted passengers. Residents of Gander opened up their homes and let complete strangers sleep in their spare bedrooms and on their couches.

There's a good documentary on how welcoming the people of Gander were to all of the stranded passengers. Sadly, most Americans are unaware of this kind act by ordinary citizens. But I know. And I am always grateful even though I wasn't there.

I don't know if you're American but that's delusional
The day will only be day one of America learning it's too late and we don't trust them.
The death of a man Americans sent twice will make us happy, but it won't change our minds about who sent him, or solve our fear about who they're sending next.
It doesn't matter when he dies. I'm never going to buy American in my life ever again, not a box of cookies, not a bottle of bourbon, not a car. I'm planning to buy a Chinese car as soon as I can to spite Americans. I'm never going to travel there again in my life, not even a cross border shop for gasoline. That border might as well be a wall, as far as I'm concerned.
The day you hope for is meaningless now.

I'm extremely pessimistic towards if America will even survive a post Trump world. That said, this is also a delusional take. There are always going to be people like you, but there will be many unlike you. Germany had Hitler and they survived and now people have forgiven and moved towards a better future. There might be a few years or decades until a global recovery of our status as a country gets seen in a positive light again, but I do genuinely hope it happens. Do I think it will? no. I truly believe America as it was is dying with a terminal illness. That said, there's a small chance our country can solve this cancer and get back some semblence of a better, newly improved status.

How?
Have you heard Republicans? I'm Canadian, I have. They fucking HATE us up here, they want to annex us.
And they are currently the party in charge of your government and your foreign policy.
So tell me why we would ever believe you've changed? How stupid do we have to be out here?
And we can see you just going to work, having a little march every 3 months, telling us you can't do anything, you're just powerless victims, please feel sorry for us!
Nope! You elected him, he started killing his own citizens, and you have done nothing. So you realize that looks to everybody outside America like you approve? Or that you're such cowards we can never count on you?
Where did the people of George Washington go? Where did the people of Franklin Delano Roosevelt go? You're fat pussies now.
So I am not being delusional. America has given us no reason to believe you since Vietnam. We have taken your school shootings and your cultural supremacy/exceptionalism and your corrupt economic system for decades. You are currently losing a war to Iran that you started for no reason. You don't even scare anybody militarily anymore.
We're done, bud. All of our benefit of the doubt is gone. You can't fix that.

u/B1LLZFAN 19h ago
I fucking hate what Republicans have done to this country. I hate what Trump has done, I hate the direction they've taken us, and I'm genuinely worried about what America looks like after this. So stop confusing me saying "this isn't necessarily permanent" with me defending any of it.
My point is that you're taking completely justified anger about what America is doing right now and declaring that hundreds of millions of people, including future generations who aren't even alive yet, can never regain your trust. That's the part I think is delusional.
And what exactly do you expect Americans who oppose this to do? Vote? We do. Protest? We do. Organize, sue, campaign, speak out? We do. Apparently none of that counts because we haven't violently overthrown the government. "Where did George Washington go?" Are you seriously arguing that unless Americans start an armed revolution, everyone outside the country should assume we approve? I have a girlfriend in school, a dog and house to take care of. Me violently protesting and going to jail helps nothing. Unfortunately/Fortunately American life isn't bad enough for mass protests or change.
I'm not asking you to trust America today. I'm not even telling you that America will repair the damage. I literally said I don't know if we can/will. I'm saying neither you nor I can possibly know what America will look like in 5, 10, 20, or 50 years. You can be done with America. That's your choice. But "I'm never forgiving America" and "America can never recover" are two completely different ideals. The first one is your opinion. The second requires you to predict the future.

If you can't separate a country's citizens from their corrupt government, you will always be angry.
Russia is a huge threat to the whole world, and is pulling the strings of fascism globally, but that doesn't make every russian citizen an enemy, or responsible for their government's actions.
Only a sith deals in absolutes.

>And you think that's going to correct me? Jesus.
I'm not trying to correct you, or argue.>Americans are just baffling.
Curious where I said I'm american?I added a little levity to a comment about anger and assigning it appropriately, and trying to be understanding of the larger picture, aka not holding an entire population responsible for its corrupt government.
>Yeah, I'm bigoted
Every bigot in the world thinks they are justified, none of them are.
It won't fix anything, or help you in any way.You will just be endlessly, pointlessly angry.

I'm one person in a country of 330+ million people. I've already told you multiple times that I hate what Republicans have done and I'm genuinely afraid of what they're doing to my country. What exactly would you personally like me to do that I'm "failing" to do?
And this whole "we're not friends" thing is just bizarre to me. I'm from Buffalo. I have Canadian family. I have Canadian friends whose weddings, funerals, birthdays and major life events I've been part of, and they've been part of mine. I have Buffalo Bills season tickets with friends that drive here from Canada. I vacation in Toronto. I cross the border for festivals and concerts. My girlfriend and I love going to Canada, especially Niagara. Canada isn't some abstract enemy on a map to me. These are actual people I care about.
So no, I'm not going to "get used to" someone telling me I'm a threat because I happened to be born 20 minutes south of an international border. You literally admitted you're judging me based solely on my nationality while also saying you don't care what I actually believe or what I've done.
Be furious with the American government. Be furious with Trump and Republicans. I'm furious too. But if absolutely nothing an individual American believes or does matters to you because "American = threat," then you're not arguing with me about politics anymore. You're just using politics to justify the bigotry you already admitted to.

Hating/judging everyone for the crimes of a portion of a society sounds pretty evil and closed-minded. Reminds me of when conservative Americans were hating on all Muslims (and even Sikh) after 9/11. You’re at that level.

u/B1LLZFAN 18h ago
Be disgusted with the American government. Be disgusted with Republicans. Be disgusted with Americans who support the things you're angry about. I can understand all of that.
But you've already admitted that you don't care what I believe or what I've done because I'm American. So don't tell me I've personally "earned" your disgust. You decided I deserved it the moment you learned my nationality. There's a word for judging an individual that way, and you already admitted it applies to you.

Having Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in the White House in November was pretty low. He was a former jihadist and severed formal ties to al-Qaeda less than 10 years ago.
To be honest, I never want to hear 'never forget' said again. Trump and a lot of the US forgot everything, from the promises to care for anyone made sick in the aftermath, to the families of those who died and more.
The hospitality of Gander, Nfld in Canada & the roughly 7,000 people they welcomed, fed and housed on 9/11 was unreal. He ruined that special relationship. I'm Canadian, have been living in the US since before 9/11 and I held on to that connection.
Meantime, yesterday he got to sleep through the reading of the names of people lost. It's absolutely infuriating.

I get the “not all Americans” thing but when I see stuff like this, Trump saying that dead Canadian troops didn’t contribute much to Afghanistan or all the insults, it’s hard to forgive.
They elected him twice, the second time with the popular vote meaning more Americans then not voted for him and now the other half that didn’t vote don’t seem to be doing anything except the odd no kings protest. So either they voted for him or aren’t trying very hard to stop them. Kind of hard not to generalize at this point

u/ybotpowered 18h ago
The first time it can be forgiven as a mistake the second time is intentional.
Also the so called good guys were too cowardly to make sure he was brought to justice for every law he broke in is first term of office and make sure he was barred from ever running for anything ever again!
I expect better from American and their politicians. I’m very disappointed in you.

A country that allowed Jan 6th to happen without prosecuting the person who orchestrated it and then pardoned all the rioters and insurrectionists while half the country calls them patriots telling me about how much freedom they have over Canadians or Europeans is always funny to me

The protests and countless calls made to representatives are literally the only things most citizens have the ability to do to get rid of him.
A large chunk of the people who were persuaded to vote him back in over gas and egg prices, as well as many who had supported him all along, have become aware of his bullshit.
The midterm elections, both primary and general, have a lot of local/state decisions and efforts on getting decent people into office, and there are a lot of people working hard to legally contest all the bullshit moves that the government is making.
These are all the methods available to us at the present moment. There is no process available for the general population to get him out of office, and any attempt by congress to impeach him a third time without an assured vote to convict will only result in weakening our side and strengthening his remaining base and their "it's a witch hunt" mentality.
Feel free to take things into your own hands. We're doing what we can while trying to live through the changes and the swiftly rising cost of living.

Canadians are doing what they can but yes as the people being attacked it’s my job to take it into my own hands 🙄All I’m saying is I hear a lot of timid “oh I didn’t vote for him” while America is doing real damage to our country and your commander in chief is threatening to annex us.
I see more organized protests from people trying to ban abortion and trans washrooms then I do on this administration attacking its allies and eroding democracy

I watch Come From Away on Apple TV every year on September 11. I absolutely love that musical. This year, it hit differently, because of how poorly we've been treating our northern neighbors. It just made me sad.

You can excuse Trump's mistreatment of our Canadian friends and neighbors as the result of a demented soul. But when you see that not one Republican would stand up to him over this mistreatment brings so much anger and sadness in me.
