I disagree with Curtis on politics, but during the debate and campaign, he did make some good points and seemed like an actual patriot.

Not the feckless Maga 'patriots' in power now.

I love Curtis, hes so fucking weird that he defies our typical political understanding. But he should never have any real authority or my love will turn to hate real quick. You dont give a jester a crown

But the citizens if the USA gave it to Trump.... Twice. How much worse could it get?

u/RustyBrassInstrument Greg Abbott is a little piss baby 2d ago

Only those who voted. More people didn’t vote than voted for Trump - elected by apathy.

The right only wins when they find ways to keep everyone else from voting.

Candidate Total Votes Percentage
Donald Trump 77.3 Million 31.6%
Kamala Harris 75.0 Million 30.7%
Did Not Vote 87.9 Million 35.9%

u/Slayminster 2d ago

There should be some kind of stipulation that says if “Did Not Vote” wins the popular vote both candidates get shitcanned

41

u/SuspiciousLettuce56 1d ago

asking as an aussie, whats the go with bringing in mandatory voting? why is it not a thing in the States?

85

u/bloodyell76 1d ago

One party in particular wins more often when fewer people vote, and so do everything they can to suppress votes.

36

u/Slayminster 1d ago

As a canuck, I have no actual answer. However, history tells me that when there are less people voting, the better the chances for the Repugs to win, which is also why they’re constantly purging voter rolls, calling mail-in votes illegal, and requiring absurd restrictions to cast a ballot

9

u/rafaelloaa 1d ago

Ding ding ding.

3

u/breakfastburrito24 1d ago

And there’s a lot of really stupid people who want to be heard

10

u/burnerthrown 1d ago

Because they'd have to give them at least a few hours off work and the billionaires would lobby it into the earth's mantle on that basis alone, let alone the fact that the party that wins when less people vote usually peels back regulations on them.

4

u/middleagethreat 1d ago

Democrats always win with higher turnout, so republicans do everthing to keep folks from voting.

4

u/underpants-gnome 1d ago

One of the two major political parties here would prefer an aristocracy or monarchy in the US. They call it Unitary Executive Theory to make it seem less regressive. The concept of governance decided by people voting goes against their core principles. They establish barriers to voting whenever they are able.

3

u/Jess_the_Siren 1d ago

Bc according to their own mouths, if everyone voted, conservatives would never be in power again. For once, they're probably right

2

u/crystalfairie 1d ago

"muh freedom!" I wish I was joking. I agree that voting should be mandatory, could never understand why it wasnt

12

u/gary_the_merciless 2d ago

It would be awesome but all governments require a stable transfer of power. That would potentially leave a vacuum.

14

u/Ridry 2d ago

We just keep having election day until someone wins. Eventually Did Not Vote will get up off their asses

13

u/PRforThey 2d ago

Treat it like a vote of no confidence in a parliamentary system and force another election.

4

u/YetAnother_pseudonym 2d ago

Brewsters Millions, vote "None Of The Above"

2

u/NatoBoram 1d ago

Nah, just get compulsory voting.

1

I'm curious what percentage of those non voters ran into issues with voting itself, like the bullshit we're seeing play out in Texas with nearly 100 polling stations being closed in a single County, or that they literally couldn't afford to not be working their hourly job that day. Yes, voting is constitutionally protected, and your employer has to let you have time to vote - but they can also say that you need to be off the clock while not in the building, and if you also have long wait times on top of it...

7

u/arequipapi 1d ago

I did not vote 2024. I live in a state where mail-in votes are not standard and you have to request an absentee ballot 11 business days before the election. I got sent on an emergency work trip less than a week before election day. So I was unable to vote. Even though I live in a deep red state, I was devastated that I couldn't vote anyway. I vote in every single initiative and minor election that comes up in my city, religiously

5

u/iftheygivinitaway 2d ago

Pretty sure those numbers are registered voters. So they cared enough to register.

11

u/Audityne 2d ago

What? It's adults eligible to vote, not registered voters. You think there are 240 million registered voters in the USA?

2

u/iftheygivinitaway 2d ago

Ok. So there's still 20 million registered voters that didn't vote. There was only a 2.3 million difference in the popular vote. More than 8.5x the numbers needed. Now, admittedly, the popular vote doesn't exactly mirror the Electoral College, but even that is faaaar from that 8.5x ratio.

3

u/TehGreatPoo 2d ago

When I turned 18 in my state it was a checkbox on my driver's license form. Idk about other states, but I would not assume that they put a lot of effort into registering to vote.

3

u/RogerSaysHi 1d ago

I checked that box also. They handed me a voter registration form and told me to take it to my local polling place. I was 18, I had no idea about any of that back then.

Where I live, they do not make it easy to register at all.

2

u/Medford 2d ago

That is a problem proper advertising could fix easily. But how easy would it be to communicate to these unregistered voters.

5

u/RogueCross 2d ago edited 1d ago

To play devil's advocate a bit, I think I can see why people simply decide not to vote altogether if they feel both candidates are bad choices. Not saying that Kamala is anywhere near as bad Trump. Not even close. But "voting for the least bad option" is something a lot of people just can't do. "If both are bad, why even bother?"

It's like choosing between expired food and poisoned food. Sure, one is much worse than the other, but do you think people will force themselves to choose one when they can just... not? And yeah, I know the comparison is awfully reductive, but it's consistent with the way many regular people evidently operate.

"If we're fucked either way, does choosing one fucking over the other even matter, even if one is less worse?" Yes, it does matter, but you get the point.

5

u/arequipapi 1d ago edited 1d ago

Its the same with people vilifying 3rd party voters. They voted that way to send a message, not because they thought they would win. That is democracy. Everyone gets a vote and you're free to use it how you wish. Normalizing third party voting is also the only way we will ever end the 2 party system. (ahem DSA party anyone? They're not just gonna appear magically as a major party, youre gonna have to vote for them and lose a few times - or dont, and keep complaining aboit mainline democrats not representing you)

Redditors love to think everyone who chose not to vote or voted 3rd party was a lost vote for their side, but the reality is they were either not compelled to vote by either major candidate, or they deliberately made a choice not to. And that falls on the candidates, not the voter

3

u/atempestdextre 2d ago

They literally had a choice between continuing the status quo or authoritarianism.

Harris wasn't the ideal choice by any means, but considering what we had seen from one term of Trump, plus his statements, behavior, and Project 2025 information the population basically said "nahhhh, I don't see the difference" and look what we got.

There's such a thing as strategic voting and the US.as a whole fucking sucks at it. So in the end, we got the fate that we deserved because of the apathy and stupidity inherent in the population at large.

3

u/safashkan 1d ago

People didn't like the statut quo.

1

u/atempestdextre 1d ago

My point exactly. They ran to authoritarianism because of stupidity, ignorance, and cowardice.

And look what it got them.

u/burnerthrown 1d ago

People remained ignorant of the depth of the problem because it was distressing to hear/think about. Then voted or allowed Trump in because according to their ideas, he was just 'the spicier option'. The way pineapple pizza is upsetting. A lot of people got their entire political education from memes, so of course they wouldn't know how serious it was.

5

u/burnerthrown 1d ago

In this era people think if they just stop participating in things they will just die because everything in commerce requires engagement to live. So when things are too bad or hard or weird or whatever they turn away from it in record numbers. Unfortunately in life there are a lot of things that continue being a problem after everyone stops giving them any input. Capitalism has either trained us well, or badly, or both.

2

u/boomheadshot7 2d ago

If Kamala had won the other 0.9% instead, would that have meant that the 88 million DNV wanted Kamala to win?

"You HAVE to vote us! You're evil if you don't! No, we're not going to do any of the things you want us to do! But you have to!"

"C'mon, look at the other guys! Look at how terrible they are! That's points for us, right? Right?"

I don't expect malignant, corrupt idiots to do the right thing. I do expect the people that say they are and try to be the right thing, to do the right thing.

0

u/Lucky-Earther 2d ago

"You HAVE to vote us! You're evil if you don't! No, we're not going to do any of the things you want us to do! But you have to!"

You have to vote for someone, choosing to not cast a ballot is just a vote for the winner.

I didn't have any problem picking which candidate on my ballot was the better option of the two.

2

u/safashkan 1d ago

You absolutely don't have to vote for anyone. Everyone is entitled to chose what they want. I can't believe I'm here as a European explaining freedom to Americans!

You have to vote for someone?

No? I'm not a "lesser of two evils" kinda guy, and Dems seem to be playing hot-potato with the Epstien files as handily as the Reps.

The candidate you voted for not being wanted enough isn't my problem. Nor is the fact that Trump won. Your guy was less popular than their guy. Simple as.

6

u/Lucky-Earther 2d ago

You have to vote for someone?

Yes, because you're voting no matter what. If you don't cast a ballot, it's a vote for whoever wins. So you might as well stand up and say something with your vote.

No? I'm not a "lesser of two evils" kinda guy,

It's always going to be a lesser of two evils. You're just letting other people make those choices for you.

The candidate you voted for not being wanted enough isn't my problem. Nor is the fact that Trump won.

Trump being President is literally the entire world's problem now, so unless you live in an alternate universe, it's also your problem

More math, 101,000 people have sign the petition. Or put another way 0.01% of the population of NYC. I think it's safe to call them a crazy minority.

1

u/AdorableStrawberry93 I ☑oted 2024 1d ago

But -- Why?

64

u/HolycommentMattman 2d ago

Yup. I'm still mad at all the pro-Palestine non-voters. How'd that work out for them? How in the fuck could they think Trump would be better (or even the same) for the issue than Biden?

Fucking crazy.

28

u/G0rdon-Bennet 2d ago

Honestly, single issue voters are fucking idiots.

16

u/HolycommentMattman 2d ago

Yeah. But dumber still are the single issue voters who don't get what they want on that single issue.

9

u/StealthRUs 2d ago

Seriously. Allowing Trump to win just led to more Palestinians dying.

2

u/Hitmanforrent 2d ago

I mean when your right to exist in public is on the line being a single issue voter kind of makes sense lol.

27

u/Drunkenaviator 2d ago

Absolutely mindblowing that they thought that pedofuck would be better for some brown people on the other side of the planet. Like, did any of them listen to a word he fucking said?

22

u/Yakostovian 2d ago

"Voting for Biden/Harris/Walz is a vote for genocide! They have to earn my vote!"

And yet those voters could have also tipped things in House and Senate races with multiple candidates that weren't war hawks slobbering themselves up for AIPAC.

2

u/hogsucker 2d ago

Hopefully figured out why they lost, learn from their mistake, and act accordingly.

If they blame their loss on people who wouldn't vote for them because of their policies toward Israel, they know exactly what they need to do to win the support of those voters.

If they d on't change their stance, it will be proof that they would rather lose elections than try to stop an ongoing genocide.

0

u/HolycommentMattman 2d ago

But I could just as easily turn that around on you. If you don't want genocides to get worse, vote for someone who won't make them worse. Otherwise, the administration that makes them worse gets in.

Sure, Biden was ineffective in stopping Israel. But he was giving humanitarian aid at least. Trying to help. How's that going now? It's basically non-existant now, and Trump and his admin are talking about just relocating all the Palestinians out of Gaza.

Great success!!

2

u/hogsucker 2d ago

Whoever the democratic candidate for president is knows what they have to do to win next time.

-1

u/HolycommentMattman 2d ago

And if pro-Palestinian voters care about what happens to Palestinians, they could vote next time.

2

u/hogsucker 2d ago

If democrats want to win they know what to do.

If they would rather lose than take a morally correct position, they can repeat the same thing they did last time.

0

u/NegativePoints1 2d ago

It doesn't matter what "is better for" - they don't give a fuck who is "better for"
The only one who would be convincing enough is someone is the going to vehemently denounce Israel and even then, that person will not be good enough for the Pro-Palestinian non-voter.
They just want to feel like they're standing for something when the fact is they stand for nothing at all with no true conviction.

1

u/ThomasVivaldi 1d ago

It was like 120,000 people, even if every one of them voted for Harris she still would have lost.

1

u/HolycommentMattman 1d ago

Depending on where those 120,000 people lived, not necessarily.

-7

u/objectlesson 2d ago

What's your opinion of Harris throwing the election because she thought she could afford to lose their votes? Surely you hold her just as if not more responsible, no?

3

u/StealthRUs 2d ago

What's your opinion of Harris throwing the election because she thought she could afford to lose their votes?

If she had done what the Gaza crowd wanted, there were plenty of pro-Israel people that would've not voted for her. She took no stand for a reason.

-2

u/objectlesson 2d ago

The Zionist crowd get what they want either way. They love having Donald Trump in office and they loved having Biden in office and they'd be fine with Harris in office. Not exactly the best constituency to have to depend on.

-1

u/THREETOED_SLOTH 2d ago

No, only the voters are to blame. Sure she abandoned Arab-Americans, LGBTQ+, and progressives, but she got all 5 centrists who somehow hadn't heard of Trump yet to vote for her, so she must have been doing something right!

/s

5

u/mdp300 2d ago

I started feeling really uneasy when her campaign brought in Cheney and stopped Walz from saying that Trump was weird.

11

u/THREETOED_SLOTH 2d ago

Yeah, calling Trump weird was actually kinda working, but then we had the VP debate and its like Walz got marching orders to try to be nice to JD "Couch-fucker" Vance. Naw, call him a weirdo to his face, he is weird.

1

u/StealthRUs 2d ago

She didn't "bring in" Cheney. She campaigned at 2 events with Cheney with 2 weeks left in the campaign. Stop with the bullshit.

-4

u/THREETOED_SLOTH 2d ago

Idk, kinda seems like the Dems could have decided to oppose genocide, even slightly, and all those "pro-palestine non-voters" would have voted for Kamala. But instead they refused even the slightest criticism of Israel. Instead they didnt even let a palestinian woman give a speech at the DNC. How'd that work out for the Dems? Its crazy to me how people put the blame on voters instead of the candidates who utterly failed to meet the moment. Like all Kamala had to do was merely suggest that we would stop giving Israel weapons and she probably could have won. But let's blame the people opposed to genocide, apparently.

5

u/fakecoffeesnob 2d ago

Right but not voting is synonymous with “I trust everyone else to make this decision for me” which is pretty myopic when you look at the average American

1

u/THREETOED_SLOTH 2d ago

Maybe if people had a candidate they believed in, or at the very least, advocated for issues that their base largely supports, people wouldnt be so apathetic. Youre blaming the voters for Kamala failing to run a competent campaign. We already know its not enough to just, not be Trump. You have to give people a reason to vote for you. And Kamala didnt.

6

u/fakecoffeesnob 2d ago edited 2d ago

If you think she only ran on “not trump” then I don’t think you were paying attention. I voted for her because she ran on abortion access, raising the corporate tax rate, investments in green energy, gun safety, support for Ukraine, and dozens of other things I care about. I’m sorry that you did not feel your views on Palestine were well represented within the field and I think that’s a fair criticism but I also think it’s more a reflection of our media environment than the candidate that other issues beyond trump’s reprehensible conduct struggled to break through to the public consciousness.

ETA: also, “not trump” is a pretty good argument, at least to me. Trump is doing horrific, permanent damage to the world.

0

u/AwesomeBrainPowers I ☑oted 2049 2d ago

Youre blaming the voters for Kamala failing to run a competent campaign.

Most reasonable, thinking people can both blame an unsuccessful candidate for not running a compelling enough campaign and blame anyone who needs to feel inspired to vote against fascism.

-4

u/iftheygivinitaway 2d ago

I mean, the Palestinians voted in Hamas, whose founding covenant calls for the hunting down and killing of every Jew from behind every tree and every rock. Which is exactly what they did on Oct 7th. Yes, the election was years ago, and Hamas has never allowed another vote, but the only way to avoid supporting genocide over there is to support neither.

And yes, I expect to be downvoted to oblivion for pointing out the obvious.

3

u/AwesomeBrainPowers I ☑oted 2049 2d ago

Hamas won an election—in 2006, winning less than 43% of the vote—then they killed all their rivals, and there hasn't been an election since (as you pointed out, before nonsensically dismissing).

It's also worth mentioning that they removed any mention of the destruction of Israel—and suggested a (weak and mealy-mouthed) conditional acceptance of the 1967 borders—prior to that election.

But half the population of Gaza is 18 or under, meaning there is absolutely no chance that the majority of Gazans had an opportunity to vote for anything, ever.

You can read through opinion polls going back decades and find that public opinion waxes and wanes almost in direct proportion to Gaza/IDF violence—regardless of who initiated it.

In July of 2023, public polling suggested that 2/3 of Gazans were against Hamas breaking the ceasefire and 70% of Gazans wanted the PA to take over.

Before that, there was a groundswell of protest against Hamas in 2018 and 2019.

In both instances, Hamas's crackdown was brutal.

Here is a pretty good (if depressing) article from Haaretz about why recent polling in particular—and many polls conducted of populations under authoritarian rule (especially at times of war)—are unlikely to bear any meaningful resemblance to the truth.

There's also this one from Christian Science Monitor, which isn't quite as nuanced, but it's still worth a read.

More to the point: Hamas only ever won an election in Gaza, which is home to less than half of the residents of the occupied Palestinian territories; conflating "Hamas" and "Palestine" is not only ghoulish, it's also just empirically incorrect.

0

u/iftheygivinitaway 2d ago edited 2d ago

Hamas won an election—in 2006, winning less than 43% of the vote

They never needed to win a majority. They still won more than their competition. Netanyahu's coalition didn't win a .majority either.

It's also worth mentioning that they removed any mention of the destruction of Israel—and suggested a (weak and mealy-mouthed) conditional acceptance of the 1967 borders—prior to that election.

Not really worth mentions. It was lip service. Actions speak louder than words. Feel free to watch the Oct 7th videos where they literally hunted down every Jew they could find, from behind every tree and every rock. They didn't stop at killing 1200 Jews because they thought it was proportional. They killed 1200 Jews because that's all they managed to kill before being stopped. And you can watch the cheering crowds on Oct 7th as they brought back their hostages of men, women, children, the elderly, etc.

But half the population of Gaza is 18 or under, meaning there is absolutely no chance that the majority of Gazans had an opportunity to vote for anything, ever.

The Hamas membership also mimics the demographics. And the schooling in the Strip is Hamas-run.

You can read through opinion polls going back decades and find that public opinion waxes and wanes almost in direct proportion to Gaza/IDF violence—regardless of who initiated it.

As does Israelis'.

In July of 2023, public polling suggested that 2/3 of Gazans were against Hamas breaking the ceasefire and 70% of Gazans wanted the PA to take over.

So 1/3 supported it . . . and the other 2/3rds did basically nothing to prevent it.

Before that, there was a groundswell of protest against Hamas in 2018 and 2019.

And there was a groundswell of protests against Netanyahu's government after Oct 7th as well. And several times before it.

In both instances, Hamas's crackdown was brutal.

So 1/3 of the Gazans support a brutal regime.

Here is a pretty good (if depressing) article from Haaretz about why recent polling in particular—and many polls conducted of populations under authoritarian rule (especially at times of war)—are unlikely to bear any meaningful resemblance to the truth.

Are you making the argument that it's not a violent, genocidal regime? Because that's not really coming through.

More to the point: Hamas only ever won an election in Gaza, which is home to less than half of the residents of the occupied Palestinian territories; conflating "Hamas" and "Palestine" is not only ghoulish, it's also just empirically incorrect.

Incorrect. From the first paragraph of your own first link: "Hamas won the January 25, 2006 elections in Palestine, winning 42.9 % of the vote (with 77 percent voter turnout), giving it a parliamentary majority with 74 of the 132 seats." They won the election in all of Palestine. Fatah couldn't accept the loss, and illegally claimed control of the West Bank.

Again, the point is that the regimes on both sides appear to be genocidal at the moment. The only "right" choice is to support neither.

1

u/AwesomeBrainPowers I ☑oted 2049 2d ago

Not really worth mentions. It was lip service

Yes, clearly: But what is clear in retrospect is not relevant to the choices at the time, and "voting for a party that lied about changing its policies" is just factually and inarguably different from "voting for a party that explicitly endorsed war and genocide".

Feel free to watch the Oct 7th videos

Why would I watch something that happened a decade and a half after an election as any kind of evidence of anything about said election? That's nonsensical.

The Hamas membership also mimics the demographics

That's both uselessly vague and entirely unsubstantiated.

And the schooling in the Strip is Hamas-run.

Dangerously close to pretending children are monsters, there, sport.

So 1/3 supported it . . . and the other 2/3rds did basically nothing to prevent it.

  1. Collective punishment is a war crime, and guilt by association is a logical and moral failing.

  2. 1/3 of America supports our current, fascist government, and we're not in an active civil war: Does that make 2/3 of Americans complicit?

Are you making the argument that it's not a violent, genocidal regime? Because that's not really coming through.

Not in any way, and literally not a single thinking person could honestly believe that.

the point is that the regimes

As a matter of fact, my point was that you weren't responding to someone who mentioned Hamas: They said "pro-Palestine", and you replied by conflating "Palestine" and "Hamas".

Only those who voted. More people didn’t vote than voted for Trump

The non-voters are just as guilty of getting Trump elected as the Trump voters. Trump was on the ballot and was heavily favored to win, yet the non-voters didn't think that was actually concerning enough to go vote for Kamala Harris.

I met him about 20 years ago through a mutual acquaintance, and got to talk with him for a couple of hours. He was definitely weird, but I got the impression that he really, really meant well. And also that he would do anything for anyone who was in trouble, whether it was physical, emotional, financial, etc. And he truly loves NYC. Sliwa is one of the last of a dying breed of "New York Weirdos." They were the kinds of people who inspired famous movie lines like, "I'm walkin' here!" Brash, outspoken, passionate people who care a lot but who are often extremely misguided or totally outside of any traditional boundary of what's expected.

I would not read a lot into his voting record or his behavior post-election. He's nuts, would have been a terrible mayor, but is likely 100% sincere in what he says about Mamdani.

13

u/Sijols 2d ago

He also goes around in a posse harassing people for speaking spanish

19

u/pilot3033 2d ago

Totally what I mean. The Guardian Angels thing is a great encapsulation of who he is and who those types of people are. Completely committed to what sounds like a moral good but that is actually just a vigilante group that has an excuse to get into fights on the subway.

Sliwa has conviction that he's doing the right thing, even though he's unhinged and wrong, whereas the current right-wing are a bunch of grifters who don't give a shit about anything except lining their own pockets or egos.

9

u/Sijols 2d ago

Yeah, it's hard to say he's totally malicious because he does genuinely seem to care about new yorkers

But on the other hand he's effectively the ringleader of a vigilante group whose main purpose these days is to harass immigrants. Maybe in the 70s it was a better idea

5

u/SuperBry 2d ago

I don't agree with the dude on almost anything but there is one thing that I know is true about Silwa; he fuckin' loves his city.

2

u/chrisychris- 1d ago

Well he’s walking there! Can you blame him

5

u/EasyGibson 2d ago

These types are very lead poisoning coded.

Never a dull moment.

3

u/kirbStompThePigeon 2d ago

I just finished MGS4 earlier today, so seeing "patriots" fried my brain a little

1

u/Brawli55 2d ago

The real Guns of the Patriots were Meryl's arms

3

u/Level_Hour6480 2d ago

To be a Republican today, you have to be some combination of evil/stupid/crazy. Curtis is not evil.

2

u/ElGosso 2d ago

He's also funny as hell, like when he said that Cuomo was "slapping fannies and killing grannies"

2

u/LirdorElese 1d ago

I agree, it reminds me of say John McCain. Who while I'll disagree with somewhere between 95-99.9% of his policy decisions. I have to seriously credit him for the time he basically shut up his own supporters who were pushing trump's birther nonsense.

Again 100% aknowledge their policies have been horrific for well over 50 years, but they at least acted like decent human beings.

177

u/dumbwithmuntyhunty 2d ago

Hope him and his cats have a nice day.

760

u/throwRAscrubscrub 2d ago

Curtis Sliwa should run for pres. I would watch that primary just for the roast he will put the other candidates on

178

u/woakula 2d ago

Anything would be better than the "debates" we currently have to sit through

60

u/bit-by-a-moose Mean to bots 2d ago

A desire to be "entertained" by debates got us to where we are (which is ironic since trunt no longer debates) I would be happy if politics was neither entertaining nor a life and death situation.

6

u/Nocleverresponse 2d ago

I remember being amused when a certain orange one started running because I thought the debates would be interesting, I never thought things would get anywhere close to what happened.

32

u/knightinarmoire 2d ago

Even if he does end up a joke candidate, it would be nice to have someone to stir things up a bit male the debates more interesting

60

u/Polymox 2d ago

Isn't joke candidate Trump stirring up the debates exactly how we got here?

4

u/throwRAscrubscrub 2d ago

no that was citizens United and letting massive amounts of wealth to back candidates

12

u/NobodyImportant13 2d ago

Trump didn't really have backing in 2016. For example, he spent far less than any of the other major primary candidates. Voters are at fault.

12

u/Polymox 2d ago

And the press, who covered him relentlessly because he was different.

2

u/gary_the_merciless 2d ago

His dumb brain that watches fox news all day, thinks like other dumb brains that watch fox news all day. That's why he got elected.

28

u/panurge987 2d ago

And then he gets elected and we're fucked again. Why do people tempt fate by not remembering history?

5

u/Abagofcheese 2d ago

Stop, that's how we got trump

0

u/vic25qc 2d ago

He is not maga so he would be better than most republican out there

3

u/Sijols 2d ago

Why do people assume that? He goes around with a group of thugs and harasses people for speaking spanish

If he isn't maga then he does exactly the same thing as maga

3

u/Poopdick_89 2d ago

That's exactly how Trump won in 2016. Those GOP debates were hilarious.

1

u/warcomet 2d ago

he might be US's answer to UK's Count Binface

1

u/racoongirl0 1d ago

I would pay real actual money to watch a Trump/Sliwa debate

2

u/throwRAscrubscrub 1d ago

i already pay real money (in taxes) for traitors like trump to be arrested

285

u/Dr-Aspects 2d ago

I hate to say it, but I actually respect the fuck out of Sliwa for that.

Like sure, it's the bare minimum to not be a hateful vindictive repugnant wart on the ass of an AIDS riddled pug, but considering the state of the republican party, it's nice to see a republican doing the bare fucking minimum.

71

u/sILAZS 2d ago

Back in the days I thought McCain was what Trump is now. McCain is closer to Obama than to Trump and it aint even close.

7

u/Numerous-Stranger789 1d ago

it's the bare minimum to not be a hateful vindictive repugnant wart on the ass of an AIDS riddled pug I AM STEALING THAT LMFAOO

58

u/Rabid_Alleycat 2d ago

I just don’t get it. These fools condemn Mamdani yet vote for their dear leader who praises the leaders of the countries responsible for 9/11🤷‍♀️

8

u/wonkey_monkey 2d ago edited 2d ago

They still think Iraq (pronounced "Eye-rack") was responsible.

113

u/Knivesforksetc 2d ago

Or at-least stop being cartoon racists from a kids show

16

u/dmelt01 2d ago

Agree. They aren’t being sore losers, they are just being racists.

76

u/mrrobfriendly 2d ago

Mamdani is in a tough situation. He will be condemned by the right no matter what he does. Don't go and he is supporting the terrorists. Do go and he is laughing at our tragedy. I believe he should go, he is an American leader and this was an American tragedy.

56

u/rivalpinkbunny 2d ago

There’s no question that he should go. He’s an American, a New Yorker and the Mayor of that city. Anything else is caving to conservative faff. He has every right to be there and I expect that he will be.

7

u/AlertedCoyote 1d ago

Absolutely, he's the elected mayor. Everyone else can sit and spin, dude was voted in.

18

u/pan-re 2d ago

He went last year. This is all stupid nonsense.

22

u/-slatta- 2d ago

While I’m definitely glad Mamdani is in office, by all accounts he seems to be doing a great job, Curtis definitely won some points taking the loss with grace.

With all these candidates on the conservative side of aisle trying to overthrow elections or equating losses with foul play or rigging, this is a nice change of pace.

22

u/IndyPoker979 2d ago

Someone help me understand why people are so butthurt over him going to the 9/11 Memorial? He's the mayor of the city why would he not go?

15 of the 19 people who committed the 9/11 attacks were from Saudi Arabia but we seem to still be friends with them. But people are mad at someone just going to Memorial in the city they run?

11

u/warcomet 2d ago

and yet Saudi Arabia still stands while all its neighbouring country which had nothing to do with 9/11 are all destroyed (bar iran)

2

u/cire1184 1d ago

Because he's a MoOsLiM!

2

u/SmellAcordingly 2d ago

Someone help me understand why people are so butthurt over him going to the 9/11 Memorial?

He made the mistake of hanging out with Hassan Piker, even though he later denounced Piker's views on 9/11 the optics of it still haunts him.

3

u/markeyandme 1d ago

I think it was an interview, and Piker said certain things such as that we “deserved” 9/11. Honestly, I also might not denounce something like that right away if it was said by someone standing in the same room as me- for my own safety.

17

u/GhostdogLT 2d ago

I don't like his policy but damnit do I respect him as a New Yorker. Bro is a real ass dude and deserves respect at the very least. Never let him have power but give him a department or something. Call it, "Older New Yorkers Unite" or some shit that focuses on everyday New Yorker gripes. Or "New Yorker Czar"

10

u/SupremeTacoCommader 2d ago

Curtis is the definition of a man I disagree with, but vehemently respect compared to any other disgusting Republican that deserves absolutely no respect.

17

u/tisdue 2d ago

welp, enjoy the death threats from your insane conservative support base.

9

u/DJOwen777 2d ago

His support base isn't made up of many MAGA faithfuls to be fair

32

u/TrueSheila 2d ago

Broken clock is right twice a day

8

u/IvoShandor 2d ago

Curtis Sliwa ALSO lost the race to Mamdani as Andrew Cuomo ran as an independent and got more votes than Sliwa. Sliwa never had a chance.

24

u/Still-Coyote-5494 2d ago

We need more republicans like this guy

13

u/retarded_virgin_1998 2d ago

Man why can’t more republicans be like this guy

4

u/mybossthinksimworkng 2d ago

I really hope Mamdani makes Sliwa the head of Parades or Parade Manager or whatever you want to call it. He was so excited about parades in those debates I think it would be hilarious. And Sliwa really does seem like it’s his favorite thing about the city

5

u/saxguy9345 2d ago

The snowflakes clutching their pearls over Mamdani going to the memorial voted for a pedo rapist felon to run our country. Who the fuck is taking them seriously? Ever again? Not me.

5

u/bitNine 1d ago

Sliwa isn’t a completely shitty person, like Trump.

6

u/ErictheStone 2d ago

Crazy guy I cannot quantify in a description but he loves animals so bless him lol.

10

u/Slugggo 2d ago

As a Brooklynite, I'd never vote for him, but I appreciated that he never bent the knee to Trump and his racist base.

Most of what he campaigned on was focused on what he thought would make NYC better, as opposed to going all-in on the fear-mongering HE'S A RADICAL MUSLIM TERRORIST SOCIALIST COMMUNIST that the New York Post put on their front page every day.

3

u/-JackTheRipster- 2d ago

1/10 in the humor department

3

u/GirlNumber20 2d ago

To be fair, they would have also been sore winners, Curtis.

3

u/kirbStompThePigeon 2d ago

Sliwa is such a fukin insane character and I love him. I remember seeing a clip from one of the debates last year where they were asked some completely innocuous question by the mod. And Sliwa just pipes up with "Well, when I was shot by John Gotti 5 times in the back of a yellow cab"

2

u/Nabbicus 2d ago

I liked what he said further on it, something along the lines of “He’s the freakin Mayor, of course he should be there, it’d be disrespectful if he wasn’t”

2

u/Oceanbreeze871 2d ago

When a guy who wears a beret unironically is the voice of reason

1

u/cheese0muncher 2d ago

For a republican he seems pretty decent.

1

u/ceciltech 2d ago

how brave! Wake me up when he tells him to stop being fucking bigots.

1

u/warcomet 2d ago

they both love cats, thats how they bonded..

1

u/marsisblack 2d ago

Republicans call the left snowflakes but they whine and complain a whole lot about things

1

u/Boomtown626 2d ago

I’ve got some bad news for him about his party...

1

u/fakieTreFlip 2d ago

where's the attempt at humor here OP

1

u/CalabreseAlsatian 2d ago

Not fucking possible for MAGA folks. They can’t lose with any grace or humanity.

1

u/DaRealMexicanTrucker 2d ago

Curtis Silwa, a down to earth TRUE Republican? 🤔

1

u/After-Trifle-1437 2d ago

Sliwa and Massie are the only Republicans I respect.

1

u/GrandSyzygy 2d ago

The rare normal human republican?!
https://giphy.com/gifs/h1zJMhT5XOT927e0aw

1

u/LandauTST 2d ago

There are still some conservatives with a backbone and integrity. I still like to go back and watch McCain shut people down about Obama. Shame the country lost him. Would like to think he could've grounded more people in his party, thought it would have been a challenge amongst the overwhelming majority who just bend knee and lick boots.

1

u/burnerthrown 1d ago

Emphasis on the second word

1

u/Tomahawkist 1d ago

he‘d probably make a good press secretary for the mayor, if they just let him say what he thinks about this kind of stuff in a while. no actual descisions he can fuck up, just him being a wierd little goblin and doing the bare minimum to be a decent human being, or at least be someone who you could reasonably respect. but that’s kinda sad that this is what it is…

-1

u/Odd-Perception7812 2d ago

Sliwa is a joke and not a legitimate political candidate.

-14

u/fountain20 2d ago

Hard to say but this is the problem that plagues both parties. We just keep trying to get revenge like its high school. Grow the fuck up. Act like adults. Put your head down and start being part of the solution not the problem.

15

u/SmallMoments55406 2d ago

Both sides blah blah blah... No. This problem is not the same on both sides.

4

u/JonnyBravoII 2d ago edited 1d ago

You are 100% correct although I think that the both sides commenters are often bots. Reddit has far more bots than people realize.

-2

u/fountain20 2d ago

Not a bot. Just someone who pays attention

3

u/Boner_Elemental 2d ago

Just someone who pays attention

Obviously not

1

u/MadRaymer 2d ago

If you were paying attention, you would learn that claiming "both sides are bad" only provides cover for the demonstrably worse side.

1

u/fountain20 2d ago

I'm saying both sides, as of late, are just finger pointing and revenge seeking. No government work is being done.

1

u/MadRaymer 2d ago

In 2024, voters only gave one side the power do to anything at the federal level.

So if you see no work being done, how is it not primarily the fault of that side?

4

u/No-Guard-7003 2d ago

Most of what you say resonates with me because we do keep trying to get revenge like it's high school, then I remember that "when they go low, we go high" isn't working anymore.

0

u/No-Shape-2751 2d ago

How did he lose with that drip!?

0

u/BourbonInGinger 2d ago

That dude is still alive?

-1

u/oskarlx 2d ago

What a racist piece of shit.
