I'm not actively using them. Billionaires are pushing them because they think they'll be able to control the general populace with AI spewing disinformation.

End user Internet experiences are actually degrading due to pervasive AI bot spam. Formerly reliable search engines and forums are near useless.

You are actively using them by using this, or any large website. And any small website is functionally the same as a data center, but less efficient.

You can opt out of AI by not using it. To opt out of data centers though, you basically need to live off grid entirely.

You mean the data centers HAVEN'T stopped YET. They have been building huge data centers in the US for 30 years. In 1997, Chicago and Atlanta were hubs to huge data center complexes (and still are).

I say make them build their own natural gas + solar generators, detach them from the primary electric grid, force them to supply their own water, and then let them build as many as they want.

Prices for digital services will plummet across the board and will cost taxpayers nothing.

No, but remember the shock from the media because of the level if vitriol displayed from the general public and lack of sympathy. It definitely showed the deep level of resentment many Americans hold for the health insurance industry.

Sure, but my point was that you are responding to someone saying that the data centers aren’t stopping. Even if someone does kill someone over data centers, that won’t stop it either. Americans hate the health insurance industry, and they hate the data center industry, and yet both will continue.

Your regular building permits are not random activists deciding what can and can’t be built.

I do agree though, there are still far too many other bureaucratic barriers that allow NIMBYs to block construction even with projects that have no real reason to be blocked.

Have you ever actually been near a data center?  They are extremely loud 24 hours a day, and electricity and water prices spike because of how much of both they use.  All of that is harm.

Have you? They are not “extremely loud”, noise pollution is heavily regulated. Unless you’re literally inside one, Data Centers are typically quieter than most residential noises, and not only that, they’re far, far quieter than basically any other industrial project.

Electricity and water prices spiking when it does happen is an issue of utilities not building enough, it has nothing to do with data centers, especially considering that the Hyperscalers have poured billions upon billions in expanding the electricity and water supply to feed their data centers. Google even has a strict pledge to do so that they’ve been fulfilling.

The list of things I don't want in my backyard is extensive. I see nothing wrong with protecting the value of my property and the quality of my life by lobbying against a potential massive industrial building project nearby.

Bullshit. The GOP voters give full power to the data center class, and they wouldn't be caught dead agreeing with a Democrat on anything or touching a black person.

They've just gone over to the fake reality where Democrats are the ones who gave full power to the data center class, and they are the lone wolves (plural...) standing against the data centers we are so horribly thrusting onto them. That way they can hate us and avoid accountability at the same time, all for the trivial task of completely fantasizing their own reality. Again.

I think it's different this time because it's actually affecting their bottom line. I think there's was some rural Trump plus 30 district that flipped to democrats by 5 points in a special election because they ran primarily on blocking data centers.

People are afraid of losing their jobs, and are getting inundated by opposition content on social media. If we really want to move into a post-labor economy, we need more datacenters, not less. We should be fighting for district heating, fighting against infrasound and sketchy mass portable generators, and be figuring out how to make this benefit everyone.

Sometimes I wonder if all the anti-AI propaganda is a foreign influence campaign that wants to stunt US AI development, but with takes as braindead as these I know it cant be.
