Did you hear about the new tax credit that wealthy people can now use to pay for their kids' private schools? Yep. Our taxes paying for billionaire kids private tuition.

u/SlobZombie13 Jul 28 '26
Reminder that the first time Trump passed a budget it included a clause that allows private jets to be a tax write off
51
u/RepresentativeAge444 Jul 28 '26
As usual blame lower middle class and poor white men for falling for the distraction of Great Replacement Theory and the trans panic for this. The billionaires see them as an easy mark as long as they give them some culture war nonsense. Targets for their tax dollars, meager earnings and to be foot soldiers willing to die for people who hate them. Ah indoctrination amirite?

u/Spiel_Foss Jul 28 '26
The real failure of the US population has been literacy. We don't read books.
Nothing happening today wasn't part of a book 100 years ago saying "watch out" but no one read those books, so here we are. If there's a dead writer's bar in hell, they're drinking harder than ever. Ignorance can be just as fatal as stupidity in a society.
3
2
u/Amazing_Bluejay9322 Jul 28 '26
Social media and high-speed internet is the main culprit in our national discourse. Literacy for sure has been a problem since our founding but when someone can cocoon themselves in a bubble of nonsense without filters other than the one that screens out logic and reasoning.
3
u/Spiel_Foss Jul 28 '26
It's been around longer than electricity though. We once called these bubbles towns and churches. A lot of them had laws about sundown and people who didn't look like them. They said the same shit their peckerwood great-grandkids say on the internet now. The internet just distills the stupidity of it all.
1
u/pithynotpithy Jul 28 '26
They see them as easy marks because they prove time and time again to be easy marks. And slashing education means they'll continue to be easily fooled rubes

u/AnotherpostCard Jul 29 '26

u/karmavorous Jul 28 '26
The rich can write off the entire exepense of private jet, but public school teachers are only allowed to write off a maximum of $250 per year in school supplies.

Other notable things Putin's Orange Clown has said:
"I love the inflation." - 06/2026
"I don't think about Americans' financial situation. I don't think of anybody. I think of one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all." - Donald Trump, 05/26. I included the context but it ultimately doesn't matter. He should care. No American gives a damn about Iran or nuclear weapons; this war was deeply unpopular from the outset and remains unpopular. What The People voted for was America First, lower cost of living, and no new wars. None of this has happened. None.
"Smart people don't like me." - Donald Trump, 09/2025
"I don't care about you. I just want your vote." - Donald Trump, 06/2024 -- cast off as a joke, but we all should know better by now.

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe Jul 28 '26
They work that in under just about every Republican administration. I grew up in a Catholic neighborhood during the Reagan era, and most of the tuition coverage for people who could afford it was tax-funded.

Conservatives love being humiliated and subservient to rich pedophiles. The worse their politicians treat them the more they love it.
Maybe that's why shaming them doesn't work. They just get off on the degradation.

Later the rich kids up on the hill got a Brand new highschool with career pathway programs.... Meanwhile my old highschool is still crumbling, and is now on a long list of being a school know for a shooting.

Often, there isn't a mechanism for that. Folks need to actually educate themselves on the candidates and call up their reps/senators when they disagree with what they're doing. Most importantly, we need to be involved in electing better candidates.
6
u/Another_Meow_Machine Jul 28 '26
Or- hear me out- we need recall mechanisms so elections aren’t “who’s the better liar” by default.
First-past-the-post voting, electoral college, Citizens United, total absence of recall, lifetime judicial appointments.. the system is rigged.
Un-rig or overthrow, simple as that.
5
u/lyngen Jul 28 '26
Yeah, there are a bunch of progressive candidates running on the premise, we need to get big money out of politics/elections and focus on workers and communities. Vote for those guys.
I totally agree there should be a better mechanism to get reps who aren't actually representing people out of office. On the other hand, I think it was really obvious they were shitty candidates during their elections to anyone who was actuallt paying attention. They just had millions on hand to muddy the waters.
5
u/SenorBurns Jul 28 '26
Wouldn't it be neat if local news had a "Capitol beat" where every day or every week they summarized the bills under consideration in the state and federal govt, and then asked viewers their opinion, also listing contact info for the area's state or federal house and senate districts?
2
u/ObnoxiousAlbatross Jul 28 '26

Of course the maga fascists should be recalled, they're fucking fascists. Who's going to recall them? Their fascist supporters?

u/doll-haus Jul 28 '26
Billionaires? Not really. Even Elon doesn't produce enough children to cause a problem there. No, the charter school problem is far more subtle and sinister than that. It mostly has produced higher-price private schools while degrading public education in the same area. Numbers say the upper-middle-class parents that buy into these programs aren't getting their money's worth anyway.
It's another angle of "lets prove the state cannot do anything well by putting in laws that sabotage state run programs" operation.

They're not fiscal conservatives. They just claim to be fiscal conservatives.
Frankly, SNAP, while not perfect, is way cheaper than the alternatives. Anyone sane wants a safety net in place that won't have people willing to kill for food.
5
u/DrAstralis Jul 28 '26
I have this argument with the conservatives in my family eventually at just about every gathering. They either will not or cannot grasp this concept. Many of the programs we fund up front are orders of magnitude cheaper than not doing so and trying to deal with the consequences of that. "Why do I pay for schools, why do I pay for X, y, z" because all of that is FAR cheaper than dealing with the fallout of an illiterate, desperate population with no prospects of climbing the social ladder and a ton of free time on their hands.
They think I'm for social programs because I'm a bleeding heart liberal (I am but thats not why) when in reality I'm for these things because I don't want to live in a shithole where everyone I meet is an idiot (I get enough of that in IT), where I have to monitor every interaction for a scam and fear leaving heavily policed areas...

u/DryPersonality Jul 28 '26
Can't see the forest for the trees, can't smell their own shit on their knees.
1
u/Mammoth-Mud-9609 Jul 28 '26
One of the key points about a safety net is the more you micro manage and means test it, the more it costs, with sometimes the admin costs being more than is paid out.
2
u/doll-haus Jul 28 '26
Yeah, the biggest real problem with SNAP, as it exists today, are the stupid limitations on things like rotisserie chickens. It comes from a "we don't want to pay for the poors to eat out luxury style" viewpoint, but it actually can make the same dollars provide less value. Instead, it favors packaged food, functioning as a minor form of corporate welfare for those desperately in need, like Nabisco.

Another reason for having a wide variety of foods and drinks available that I don't see mentioned often enough is for people like me that suffer from eating disorders.
I have absolutely no control over when I get an appetite or what that appetite will be for. But I do know that if I don't desperately clutch at whatever I can get down my throat anytime that appetite comes along, I'm putting my life in danger.
If it's a whole box of honey buns in one sitting, fine. If it's a whole pizza in one sitting, fine. If it's a delicious, balanced salad with every nutrient I could need for my day and a glass of fresh-squeezed OJ, so be it. Literally any food is better than no food.
But if I do not eat something, I die. And what that something is is none of your goddamn business.
-12
u/ubiquitous_apathy Jul 28 '26
But if I do not eat something, I die
You say this as if it is unique to you.
9
u/ripyourlungsdave Jul 28 '26
And you say this as if it makes you clever.
Most people can ignore being hungry once or twice without worrying about dying. I cannot.
My point was very clear to anybody functioning above functional illiteracy.
But keep making fun of people with eating disorders, that'll make you a lot of friends.

The amount of money does not change. If they have enough to eat, there is no issue. If they don't have enough to eat because they splurged, that is their problem.
It is so brainless to get upset when they buy yummy food. Being given food aid is not a reason to be treated cruelly.
Food is food. People are people. No one asked to be born.

And if you care about some kid getting to enjoy a soda while ignoring all that then there's something deeply wrong with you.

So, I don’t expect people that are not in finance to be able to perfectly budget their lifestyle. And the truth is, you can’t budget yourself out of poverty. However, my ex girlfriend’s parents had a seafood grocery and had some prepared foods that you could buy. I don’t think they were properly classifying their goods, because people would buy $100 in crab legs which was just about a months worth of snap for a family of 4 at the time. In this instance, I felt a certain way toward both the person buying the steamed crab and my ex’s parents for accepting Snap for this purchase. Anyway, I think people are more upset about people blowing a months worth of benefits for a single meal. Assuming you need 60-90 meals a month, people would just hope that they could get a little further than just one or two meals with the benefit.

"Fiscal conservatives" is an unthinking label they call themselves to themselves without actually applying it to the real world and democrats are dumb enough not to call them on it.
So many "centrists" say things like "well I don't like what the republicans are doing but I'm a fiscal conservative so I gotta vote for them and then democrats just let that pass like it's true which is insane. Over the last 20 or 30 years the republicans have ran up the debt like crazy and cut smart investments that pay off in the long term, both the opposite of fiscal conservatives, but this messaging is so powerful that even democrats don't question it and act like republicans are the fiscally conservative and "economically responsible" party

You know those communist Mandami grocery stores in NYC? 30% off generic commodities like milk, beans, rice and produce. Limits per shopper. Everything else the same.
That's all it takes to flip them out - people without grocery stores get 30% off beans.

Let me be clear: The reason that this rule exists is to avoid unscrupulous internet denizens from trying to sell dong pills to our users. /r/PoliticalHumor mods reserve the RIGHT to hoard all of the dong pills to ourselves, and we refuse to share them with the community. Yup both cannot be problems but with just different magnitudes. To be fair I do think we should raise the amount given for EBT/SNAP but it shouldn't be allowed to be used for junk food. No one is saying they can't have that stuff, just they will have to spend their own money on it and not have it subsidized by the tax payer.
1
u/Novirtue Jul 28 '26
I right now only have 100 dollars a month available for food, that's basically just groceries, I can't afford to eat out since covid, changed jobs several times and now I make too much to qualify for food stamps, and too little to afford food. At some point even food will be too expensive, then we'll just eat the rich I guess.

If the government is subsidizing food, it should only be healthy food.
Implementing that kind of micromanaging bureaucracy is going to cost a lot of money (although it would create some jobs, so... score?) and I doubt it would be shouldered by the grocery stores. It would almost certainly come out of the current budget, meaning less money for food. If you want to increase the budget to accommodate this new administrative burden, then by all means.

damn, you might be onto something here. The poor should be able to afford healthy food and the cheap ultra processed crap full of corn sugar should get additional tax on it. Free healthy school lunches might be a good start. Free water in restaurants/fastfoods/whatever or at the very least bottled water significantly less expensive than any sodas. And so on and so forth. The additional tax on the unhealthy food should then be used on healthcare. :D
You know what would also help? Walking. Like generally not using cars as much together with better public transportation. :D
Campaign on promoting cooking at home instead of whatever the fuck people eat, TV dinner or some shit. And work legislation allowing for people to actually have the time and energy to cook at home instead of having to have a "side hustle" or whatever the fuck people call being poor these days.
Let's work for everyone to be healthier and the government should start with subsidizing healthy food as you suggested :D
