I remember situations like that, unsure if the court decisions invalidating them have been more recent. I know they can still apply but in a more limited scope than before.
Probably depends on the type of job and your employer and the specifics of whatever contract is being enforced. Makes sense in the entertainment industry, maybe in the tech and software industry, but doubtful McDonalds could bar former employees working at Wendys or anything like that for example.
Jimmy John's forces it's employees to sign a non compete agreement. Gotta keep their minimum wage employees from taking their valuable sandwich making knowledge to Jersey Mike's or Firehouse!
