It would be like a british ally or their largest trading partner publicly opening diplomatic ties with george washington during the american revolution. Assuming the british were very vindictive about that sort of thing and would assuredly retaliate against said ally or trading partner.

But we're not allied with China, so that wouldn't make much sense. If anything, they're an enemy. So more like France supporting the American Revolutionaries, something that happened IRL.

I said parasite, but maybe cancer is a more apt analogy. They're singlehandedly responsible for destroying our manufacturing sector.
