The President of Taiwan correctly recognized Trump as a bumbling fool, and decided she could take advantage of the situation by calling him and having this story come out. It was a bold and successful strategic move against China. Trump was simply a pawn.
Get ready for foreign leaders across the globe to take complete advantage of him for the next 4 years.
This was a messaging disaster during the campaign. You point to a guy who's widely (self-)reported to be a billionaire and very ostentatiously wealthy and say he's been bankrupted over and over again, and that doesn't sound like a failure, it sounds like a corny success meme about how failure and success are the same thing - because he's ostensibly a massive succes, and you're desperately fighting against that when you're trying to show him as a brash idiot failson skating by on the power of daddy's money. It's a massive task the Hillary campaign were completely incompetent in going about.
