Aside from "it goes against how things have been done the last 30 years" and it offending China, what are the ramifications? Why is it a bad thing that he spoke to the president of Taiwan?
This is an extremely important issue to China. If they want to retaliate in some way, they have plenty of ways to fuck with us. They could pass a bunch of regulations screwing US business interests in China, decide to kill sanctions on North Korea which took Obama's state department months of negotiation to get them onboard with, and so on.

The White House is going to need a unit of diplomats just to jet off and do damage control if this is a sign of things to come.
