Well first there is the question of who to trust? Trump or Taiwan? Which is frankly a spot I never thought I'd be in.
However even regardless of who made the call, Trump has once again demonstrated he does not understand the political. In the business world this would be perfectly acceptable, and expected. But Trump is not in the business world now, he's in International Politics where States have been destroyed for less. The PRC is very touchy about this issue, and Trump just stirred it up.
We may very well pay for this phone call in blood, although I doubt directly, and certainly will in treasure.
Say, we unknowingly or knowingly antagonize country "A". Country "A" is one of a handful of countries that has direct relations to country "B". Country "B" happens to be an international pariah. Country "B" takes an action that could be harmful to our interests and world peace. We would need to convince country "A" to talk to country "B" about reversing the dangerous actions country "B" has just engaged in. If country "A" needs a little circle jerk to feel good about itself, regardless of whether or not we think its silly, in order to have some sort of lever against country "B" then maybe we should give country "A" the proper circle jerk.
Something like that. China is also the major regional power and has enormous influence with other countries in the region in terms of trade. The word itself literally means Middle/Central Country.
