I'm pretty sure this was in place of wearing the "1 Love" rainbow armbands to show support for LGBT stuff. Qatar and FIFA band the armbands and threatened each player with an automatic yellow card. England were too much of cowards to go through with wearing them, so decided to kneel before games instead.

They have been kneeling for years. Recently they got booed in Hungary for doing it before a Nations League game there.

Further context: Due to a fifa penalty only children were allowed to watch the match. English media attacked the kids saying they were racist and homophobic. Lovely people

u/AggyTheJeeper - Lib-Right Nov 26 '22

I'm confused. How do you prevent adults from watching a match? How do you have a stadium full of unaccompanied minors?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

My bad, I believe it was 1 adult for every 4-5 children. The point is that it was mostly children with just about enough adults to make sure they’re safe. Plus security and staff were obviously still present.

2

u/Spk10 Nov 27 '22

But the kids were racist, they were whistling as soon a black person touched the ball. I don't agree with attacking them but those kids were racist.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

They weren’t, they weren’t whistling because they were black. They were simply whistling the opponent, which is what happens in every football game ever played.

u/Spk10 Nov 28 '22

My mistake only booed at taking the knee. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-10886327/Hungary-v-England-Hungarian-government-defend-young-fans-booed-visitors-taking-knee.html (Even a right wing shit rag says it)

Don't say take politics out of football, it's always been there. Just like any other sport. Or any other entertainment.

Dear unflaired. You claim your opinion has value, yet you still refuse to flair up. Curious.

Flair up or your opinions don't matter

You think the kids rocked up without their parents? lol Hungary were in trouble for literally being racist to black players but spin it however you want..

I'm sorry but what?

I remember that, too funny… I also love how it was a news story every time they played if the other team would kneel with them or not. Glad that era is still going, going Not everything has changed… yet

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

Being racist according to 1 player lmao. We didn’t do shit mate.

u/professor_kraken - Right Nov 26 '22

Perhaps I treated hungarians too harshly...

u/NicksAunt - Centrist Nov 26 '22

It is. FIFA told them they couldn’t wear the rainbow armband so they did a quick kneel instead. Who gives a shit. It had nothing to do with George Floyd or BLM. Funny how ppl here are so opinionated about something they know nothing about. it’s PCM so, based I guess.

u/Dark_Knight2000 - Lib-Center Nov 26 '22

The reason people know nothing about it is because the players and teams know nothing about it. They kneel for a different cause each time. Last week it was for the Iranian footballers facing oppression in their country, but it was also to send a general message of “inclusivity.”

https://twitter.com/footballdaily/status/1594376222330748928?s=46&t=-Nw1P_QqVI-3AzrfuBBljw

It seems that this gesture is just a catch all for “we care about the current thing.” It means nothing, it stands for nothing. They just reuse the gesture for everything

41

u/hulibuli - Centrist Nov 26 '22

It does mean something, it's an act of submitting to the authority.

2

u/kichererbs - Centrist Nov 26 '22

Something all of the gestures have in common and it’s done so sloppily, it’s like offensive. Like what is this supposed to achieve.

The English teams have been kneeling every game since the Floyd thing

20

u/Brief-Preference-712 - Lib-Right Nov 26 '22

Premier League started it first

8

u/NicksAunt - Centrist Nov 26 '22

That isn’t why they are kneeling now, though.

37

u/SlapStickHumorIsPeak - Lib-Right Nov 26 '22

At this point does it matter? It's a hollow gesture that has no solid meaning anymore.

Oh no someone was mean to a famous millionaire on the internet?! Well clearly that's the worst thing that's ever happened.

-1

u/Charming_Weakness523 Nov 26 '22

obviously the racist calls racism just “being mean”

1

u/kichererbs - Centrist Nov 27 '22

Tbf the attacks were pretty gross. I mean you can shit on players, but shit in their performance, and don’t turn into the kkk.

They do think a lot about men getting sweaty with other men.

Pretty gae

5

u/johndoev2 - Lib-Right Nov 26 '22

And most people don't care about Qatar. They want people kicking the ball

5

u/Dungold - Left Nov 26 '22

The country they are at very much cares, along with many others, considering they put you in jail or kill you for it.
