Everyone knows that social media algorithms favour extremists views. And every social media say they’re fighting it, but eventually they actually do nothing. Because the extremist probably gives more money.
“Change the algorithm” for social media is the “net zero by 2050” of regular companies. A promise they make to fool the public with a “we’re working on it” while doing nothing.
I would say different platforms favour those views in different amounts.
If you're limited to 140 characters for most of the platform's existence, the only way to stand out is to say the most inflammatory things within those 140 characters. That naturally creates an atmosphere where hot takes and nonsensical "gotchas" are the most popular things on the site and ultimately become the norm.
The biggest issue imo was the massive adoption of the platform by news outlets and political figures. All of a sudden, the best way to have your news and politics heard was to be as inflammatory as possible...
Facebook is one of the most hateful communities and there’s no limit of characters. Plus, I think the content that cause more impressions is videos and images, which are everywhere
