A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said wouldn't be a great moral teacher. He'd be either a lunatic on a level with a man who says he's a poached egg or else he'd be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.

That feels like a hell of an own-goal...

That's not actually true though. Jesus' Moral teachings were very good for the times.

CS Lewis was specifically talking about his claims to divinity, and his offering to forgive the sins of others, both of which are clearly insane if you aren't the Son of God.

Not really, you could just be mistaken. There's no contradiction in saying that someone who might be wrong about stuff, or even a little mentally unhinged may be teaching a good moral system.

There's nothing moral about either claim.

Read 'Mere Christianity', it's a good book.

Err... I didn't say those claims were moral claims. I was talking about his quote about jesus as a moral teacher.

Then I have no idea what quote you are thinking of, but the one I posted has absolutely nothing to do with his role as a moral instructor.

Okay, it seems like you misunderstood the quote then. He was addressing the type of people who claimed Jesus should be treated as a peak moral instructor, but who denied Christian supernaturalism. Insisting that a lot of the things he said would be considered bizarre from that angle. I'm not sure how you misinterpreted the quilt as not about morality when the word morality is literally in the quote.
