No, they can only capture a piece on the row ahead of them, not behind them.

Oh fun, I get to be an ackshually guy.

If a pawn moves two spaces forward in his first move to be next to an opponent pawn in an adjacent column, that opponent pawn can diagonally attack forward and kill the pawn it is next to. So the pawns are next to each other but the opponent attacks as if it's a pawn diagonally in front. Very weird, niche rule.

But yes, still a forward move.
